Recruits

Az,

I agree and disagree with your assesment on Martin. I saw two things that impressed me about the kid, he can run the floor. Most 7 footers have to be yanked up the floor in high school, and he doesn't. He has good laterlal movment. He isn't a bolted in the paint and he isn't afraid to be physical. He lost most of those battles.

That being said, at this moment, he needs to put on a ton of strength. He isn't an offensive threat, but that offensive system they ran was brutal. They are using a 7 foot kid to make picks 25 feet away from the basket. He didn't get very many touches where he could display post moves.

On another note, what is with the officiating in that league. Pretty brutal. The martin kid sets a viable screen, and to get to the shot those kids just made bull runs through the kid. Last time I checked from my own officiating handbook, that is a foul. On another occasion, a kid gets tackled in the key, ball goes out of bounds and the ball goes the other way.

If I were get an impression about this league and team, these kids are showing off to recruiters to get schollies. Lots of individual break downs on offense, some terrible examples of defense. For the most part I thought Martin played within himself.

I like the kid. Doesn't strike me as terrible, but I think he probably needs a year of weights in his lower body to be more effective.
He is a project, but I am not sure he is in the area of Don Carter project.

I agree. He wasn't uncoordinated. He was soft, but the reffing was brutal. At one point he gets knocked about 15 feet on his ass when setting a screen, but no foul called. In fact, I don't think there was a foul called in the 10+ minutes of video I watched.

Come in, RS, hit the weights...would sure love to see some video where he actually touches the ball. :?

from his senior year in wyoming

Long shot:
Tinkle needs to get on the horn to a great baller, Trey Zeigler who is transferring from Central Michigan after his father Ernie was fired as coach. Tinkle needs another veteran assistant coach and he might as well make it a package deal for the 4 star kid and the coach.

We don't need a scholarship guard to sit out next year as we have good guards in my opinion. We need a 6-8 to 6-10 wide body, banger who can defend and rebound.

As an aside I am not high on this Martin kid. I have been wrong before and I hope I am again but he appears to be very soft, can't get a board and never touches the ball on offense so its difficult to see his offensive skills. I noticed in the stats of one game in November he got 3 minutes (not what I would expect from a Division 1 recruit) and no stats. On another 3 minute video he did absolutely nothing. Let me say again I hope I am wrong but I think the 7 footer that we had from Australia looked better than this kid and we know that was a bust.

I fully agree, No more guards for next season! We are loaded there. I honestly want to see an effective post scorer, and board eater 6'8" or better, that will bring some toughness. The last few years our toughest guys have been Stockton, Steward, Vassy Banny (sp?), basically 6'5" or shorter guys.

Cherry and Steward are tough too. I want an "attitude, and heart" big man. I will save my comments on Martin, until I see more. The one thing I do like is he does move well for a big. Then again, I am not a fan of the big loathes either.

Also, would love to see Emerson earn a scholarship. I like what I have seen, and heard of this kid. :thumb: 6'4" to 6'6" guys that can play 3 positions are always a luxury to have at any level. :thumb:

Here are a couple targets for the spring that I lifted them from the mslacat. I looked for video and couldn't find any on either of them.

Edrico McGregor 6'8" pf/c from North Idaho College.
http://www.nicathletics.com/MensSports/Basketball/Roster.aspx

Rafriel Guthrie 6'2" g from South Idaho College.
http://magicvalley.com/sports/south...cle_c828be62-222a-11e1-a31d-0019bb2963f4.html

Sounds like Rafriel and Keron have a lot in common. If he winds up here it will be interesting to see how that plays out.

McGregor yes......no offense to Guthrie, how many guards does a team need? We have enough guards already.

Speaking of transfers, 3 guys are leaving leaving Michigan, and 1 is leaving Connecticut.

http://www.examiner.com/university-of-michigan-in-detroit/three-michigan-basketball-players-will-transfer" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

2 Carlton Brundidge 6-1 190 Guard FR Southfield, Mich. (Southfield HS)
23 Evan Smotrycz 6-9 235 Forward SO Reading, Mass. (New Hampton Prep [N.H.])
45 Colton Christian 6-6 215 Forward SO Bellevue, Wash. (Hargrave Military Academy [Va.])

I would be looking at Smotrycz and Christian, for who could help our needs. Christian is Washington boy too. At least send out some feelers to them. :thumb:

Here is an article on the Connecticut transfer, 1 year of eligibility for us to build our other bigs, I would like this. http://content.usatoday.com/communities/campusrivalry/post/2012/03/connecticuts-alex-oriakhi-to-transfer/1#.T2qXudV4qJk" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I would like to see three 6'8" guys that are extremely athletic than a true back to the basket post player. Give me three guys that can disrupt on both ends and can get out and run and press anyday over a true post player.

the only downside of that is I'll have to listen to LAGriz bitch about how six foot eight guys need to be under the basket and play like george fucking mikan....you know, like all of kentucky's and north carolina's guys play.

I also am impressed with Emerson. I wonder if Tinkle does not tie him up with a schollarship, if Evans would offer him at ISU?

Andy Martin, #42 in Black , recent game against Brewster. I haven't watched the whole thing yet.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m-qMOSyqR7M" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I like the kid who uploaded the video selling/describing himself in the description under video. Also a couple blue chip recruits play for brewster, mitch mcgary #33, committed to michigan and tj warren #32, to nc state. both were recruited and offered by my tar heels. so i like the competition he is facing.

I think you might be underselling the couple of blue chip recruits statement. I looked the school up and Brewster has 2 5 stars 3 4 stars and one 3 star kid. That is some seriously elite competition. Martin's team lost 84-67 but that Brewster team went undefeated and won the National Prep School Championship. The fact that he is out there and playing a lot of minutes is impressive. I agree these big guys are a crap shoot and he might end up to be more like the Aussie kid vs Qvale but he does seem to run the floor well, has some agility, and has some decent hands which is a start.

EDIT:
The two teams met at the national prep school invitational which features the top 30 prep programs in the country.

I like Martins fluidity and feet, but the guy needs to buy a cot and live, eat, and sleep in the weight room. I saw a very complacent and unconfident player in that video. He works relatively hard on defense and does a decent job, but on the offensive end he was standing around and was never a threat to score. Also dissapointed in his lack of effort to rebound. If he can learn to be aggressive, gain some strength, and rebound we might have a very good role player.
