Recruiting Florida

UM used to recruit Florida pretty heavily and always seemed to have a couple really talented players from The Sunshine State on the roster. Calvin Coleman and Justin Gaines come to mind initially. Is there any chance we can bring in an assistant with ties to the state and try to infuse our team with some real southern speed and athleticism? I know it's really difficult to convince Florida boys to head cross country to the great white north but it's worked for us in the past. Any former Griz Floridians coaching HS ball down south? Would Gaines be interested in coming back "home" to UM?

We really don't have the budget to recruit Florida as effectively as we would need to for it net results for us. We had a few good players from there when we did recruit there but we also had some busts. I think we should focus on places that are familiar with our program, like the mountains and that we can compete with the mid-major FBS programs for. Montana might as well be in Russia in the minds of most Florida players.

Kramer recruited florida quite a bit at msu with mostly negative results (clive lowe was probably the most notable success). Lots of the fla kids quit/transferred/were arrested (lebrum, fuller) and kramer ended up cutting ties with the state.

Thanks for the buzz-kill bro. Your post makes a ton of sense and I know with budgets and geography it's a huge stretch and a pain in the ass to recruit that far east. Montana, Arizona, California, Washington and Oregon should certainly remain our focus in recruiting but bringing in some new blood is needed in my opinion. I have noticed that we seem to be recruiting the midwest and Texas a bit more than in the past. Marq Rogers (Indiana) and Dominique Bobo (Texas but no longer with the team) were some exciting "gets" in last years class.

I like that we are hitting the midwest harder. I think we can compete for players out there. I agree about exploring some new areas, especially if you have an assistant that has connections or familiarity with the area.

Hopefully our next coach is able to expand recruiting with his staff and with the appropriate financial backing. West coast will always be the focus but I think the Griz are capable of landing solid recruits out east.

And when are you thinking this reincarnation will take place?

Speaking of the midwest, it would be wise to get someone with Omaha connections. Omaha has always had talented players, the problem has been academic qualifications. Anyway, the Omaha Public Schools are about to approve a plan to increase minimum GPA qualification for athletics. When approved it will start with the incoming freshman for 2014 or 2015, with gradual adjustments for incoming Sophomores through Seniors. Much of the Omaha talent base did not play DIV 1 football due to academics. This is a much needed move for the Omaha Public Schools. I will be surprised if it is not approved.

January 2015 ideally.

I have been watching a few of the SoCal high school playoff games and damn! Some of these teams like Serra, Bosco, a couple of LA schools and one or two from the desert are very, very, very good. I know some BSC fans will not agree but maybe a couple of them would be competitive in the conference Terrific coaching, as well....But, then, even in the top high schools here, coaches are paid as much as UM pays...the elite teams in SoCal are not typical high school teams, Who needs Florida or Texas?

What if?.. Although I think the top CA HS team gets blown out by every BSC team except for maybe Weber and Northern Colo.

That's my point...but, if you think these kids are typical hs football players, you haven't seen them. I 've never seen so many good players or coaches on this level, anywhere!

California has always been good to us. Green is a nice asset to have in his ability to appeal to those kids in SoCal. I don't see us ever being real successful recruiting the east coast for the reasons I touched on earlier. I'm confident that the coaches know where they personally have the most success recruiting at.
