Recruiting budgets

I while back, in a post I can not find, the topic of the basketball recruiting budget came up. More specifically how little Robin Selvig had to recruit with. I could not believe that Selvig would not have a decent recruiting budget at least, if not better than the rest of the Big Sky. So I did some researching here was what I found,

Team - Recruiting budget
UM Men - $70,000.00
MSU men - $42,000.00

Lady Griz - $8,606.00
MSU Women - $32,248.00

This info is 3-4 years old and is based on actual expenditures not budgeted.

I have a more detailed look on my Blog.

I have a hard time believing in this day and age of political correctness and title 9 that the UM administrators would just give Tinkle $70,000 to work with and Selvig $8,000 to work with. I'm bet those numbers aren't even, but not that far apart. I am guessing that either Selvig really doesn't like to fly all over the country and visit prospects or all the players he wanted to target that year happened to be within driving distance.

Men's program has the Roundball Club and Roundball fundraising golf event that raises close to $80K annually, I believe. Most of these funds are used for recruiting. Lady Griz do not have that type of outside fundraiser so their recruiting budget suffers.

Again these numbers are dollars spent for a particular year so it could reflect that Selvig landed most of his recruits close to home, but with an operating program budget of around $1,000,000 compared to about about $650,000 average for the rest of the league women's programs and ticket sales of close to $300,000 compared to $4,000 - $30,000 for the the other 8 programs, one would think that if Robin wanted a recruiting budget of $30,000 (the approximate average of the Big Sky women's programs) the athletic department should oblige and give it to him.

Again my guess is that this is the amount that Robin needed to recruit the class he wanted. Since he pretty much limits his recruiting now to Montana, Idaho and Washington it is possible he simply all he need/wants. Given the income generated and budget budget numbers that I posted above, there is no way, the Griz Athletic Department could deny Selvig a recruiting budget that is at least on par with the other Big Sky schools. If they are denying and Selvig the recruiting money (and again I do not think they are) you Lady Griz fans should be livid.

Not accurate actually. The Lady Griz have a huge fund raiser in their Texas Holdem Tournament. They also have a company selling Lady Griz gear at all the games and they get a nice cut of those profits as well.

I think it you have to look at the whole picture.

The Lady Griz overall operating budget (between $1 and 1.1 million) is $300,000 to 500,000 more than the reset of the Big Sky conference (between $750,000 and 500,000 each school). The Lady Griz ticket sales of close to $300,000 dwarfs the rest of the league, which only averages about $10,000 in ticket sales. You then add the largest sports marketing package, and booster support in Big Sky women's basketball and it is quite clear the Lady Griz program is the most financially secure women's program in the Big Sky conference.

I do not think the women's program will ever match the Griz men's program money wise but there is no way it should take a back seat to any of the Big Sky Womens programs when it comes recruiting or any other budget item.

Since I posted this and the article on my Blog, I have heard from a couple folks with insight into the issue, and quite frankly Robin's recruiting budget is exactly where he wants it, If he wanted to spend more he would certainly be allowed to shift a few items around Robin does not have to spend a lot of Money some years because he generally does not have to travel much farther than the State of Washington to get his recruiting done. It has been suggested that Robin expand his recruiting efforts more nationally, and he will pick up California athlete from time to time, but he is content with the athletes he is currently getting.

With all five of this years recruits coming from Montana I am betting that this years budget is minuscule. Fly a girl in from California can cost what $1,200 (I hate to think what it costs for a Girl from Australia) but have a girl drive up from Butte or Anaconda with her parents $60-100.

It sounds like he could get more money if he wanted it which might not be a bad idea so they can become more competitive in the first round of the ncaa tournament.
