So this is something I like to do every year. I like to try and peek into the future and see what records may be broken and which players might make significant moves up the career rankings. This years list is pretty small though compared to years past. Looking into the record books and the active career leaders shows just how inexperienced this team is. The only individual career record with a chance to be broken is LV’s punt return TD mark of three. Junior Bergen currently has two with two more years to break it…and add to it. The NCAA D1 team mark of consecutive games without being shutout will be broken as soon as Florida gets shutout or we make one or two more deep playoff runs. The only other career record to watch is Coach Hauck’s career wins and conference wins by Big Sky coaches. He’s currently eight wins away from passing Jerome for career wins in the Big Sky and a perfect season in con play will tie him with Jerome.
As far as the rest of the team, only Nick Otsmo and Xavier Harris are primed to make significant strides up the career leader boards. A 1,000 yard rushing season by Ostmo will crack the top five and Harris is 1,200 yards away from equalizing that achievement. I know some people hope Eli Gilman may take over many of the reps from those two but keep in mind, they still have two years of eligibility. I believe Bobby wants to be a very balanced run team this year and in the future also. We may finally be getting close to what we remember as “Bobby Ball”. Ostmo is also only eight TD’s away from cracking the top 10 in UM history.
The only other significant achievement in career numbers will be Alex Gubner trying to top all DT’s in Montana’s history in tackles, sacks, and tackles for loss. He’s already locked down the top spot on the INT list and his Sr season should put him at the top or right near it in every other category. To take the top spots, he’ll have to have a monster year in tackles(82) but has a better chance is sacks(6.5) and TFL(10.0)
