Rating our defense's performance

Overall, I actually didn't think our defense played too bad today, especially when we had 3 starters out today. I will agree we got completely burnt on the deep balls and that's gonna have to be cleaned up. Other than that though I actually thought it was a good performance by our D today. 2 interceptions, a fumble, we looked pretty good other than deep balls. There's always room for improvement and I know they'll improve from defending the deep ball. I'd say our D today was worthy of a 6. Not bad for the first game of the season. I actually thought this game went better than last years opener against St. Francis.

St Francis is a scholarship school and was, at least in my opinion, much better than Valpo. If we're grading from 1-10 I'd give them a 5-6. The secondary gets a 3-4, DL a 6, LBs a 6-7. Giving up 450 yds to a non scholly school is a bit troubling.

The Griz outscored them in EVERY quarter. And, their coach was interviewed earlier this week where he described the Griz just as they were today. He knows, and now everyone knows, that UM is not going to stop the big play. But, there is more to a game than that and he was the first to admit it. Almost all of the top teams today has shaky starts and ended up winning. Not time to panic...Valpo might be a non schollie team but then, so is the Ivy League...They played well in front of the biggest college crowd they will ever see. Give them credit and give the credit to UM, too.

St. Francis started off a little better this year. They beat Lock Haven 69-3 today.

Agreed. 100% agreed.

Happy for Banks. Played a hell of a game. Not so happy with the pass rush and the big plays. Better clean those two areas up or we will get torched. They beat a team they were supposed to beat...

1/11th of the way into a race the very best and the very worst are not all that far apart. It takes a bit for them to really start to separate. The Griz defense does not look good but overall I would say the offense and certainly special teams have improved. We'll see as time goes on. The UDB isn't exactly Usain Bolt, but they'll have significant separation next week.

The defense, especially the d-line, was in position to make more sacks, and didn't make them. Have to find a way to make a few more of them. Same of tackles at or near the line of scrimmage. Were in position a number of times, but couldn't quite make the tackle. May apply to the linebackers too. Things like this can be improved and fixed, and I am sure they will.
