I feel that we have one of the best punters in the country quite capable of playing on Sunday but why has no one helped him get the ball off more quickly. Too many steps.

Same coach that hasn't got a kicker to be successful despite multiple guys on roster???

I think there is only one person in the U.S. who could do that.

I am glad to see you support the transgender community.

I'm pretty sure if Shaw had to drop and give Jillian 50 every time he had a punt blocked, he wouldn't have another punt blocked, LOL.

Seriously though. Some of you must know average time from snap to punt. Anyone ambitious enough to do some comparisons? Anyone keep track last year of his times? Anyone know how much different/longer they are than other punters we have had in the past or other FCS punters? I know there is a stat for everything surely there is for this. Let's see some charts, graphs, profanity scribbled on beer coasters.

Is it that Shaw is slow or are they getting to him any quicker (than average) when they go for it or a little of both. Just curious, obviously I've never played the game.

Snap to kick time is generally considered good if it is under 2.2 seconds. 2.1 and lower is what most college coaches expect. Shaw's slowest time on saturday was a 2.1 and that was on the snap that bounced. The blocked punt was a 1.96 get off time and was a protection fault due to the stacked A gaps. As long as the punter takes up less that 5 yards on his approach it does not matter how many steps he takes. The problem seemed to be fixed on the ensuing punts. I for one am more of a fan of the pro style punt rather than the shield punt. Yes, coverage is the main reason for a shield punt, but with a good punter pro style should be used. Hence why pro teams use it.

Some stats from Shaw's career: Freshman year he had 54 punts in the pro style and none blocked.
Sophomore year he had 48 punts and one blocked and another tipped.
This year he has had 8 punts with 1 blocked.

Note the last two years have been in shield punt formation.

I was a low life punter and so I must come on as an expert. Joke.
Shaw is a very big guy for a punter. His size alone counts for a few tenths of a second.
He does not get many punts blocked because of his lack of speed.
His kicks that have been blocked are usually because his punt blockers in front miss judge or screw up and do not get the blocks they need for him to kick it away.
Much of that blame goes to the special teams coaching and not to Shaw.
Problem is deep and complicated, if you try to speed up his kick he (and other punters) will lose concentration bringing on shanks, flubs and short kicks. If you use him right he punts the ball in very good areas and is an excellent spot kicker.

Shaw is one of the best punters we have had. I think he is great.

Place kicking is another topic to agonize over, not punting!
