LA JOLLA, Calif. - Charity Elliott has resigned as head women's basketball coach at Portland State University to take the same post at the University of California-San Diego.

The California school announced the hiring on Friday. Portland State will start an immediate search for a replacement.

Elliott, who spent three seasons at PSU, will be the fifth coach at UCSD in its 36-year-old program.

San Diego made it to the Final Four in the NCAA Division II last season.

Elliott replaces Janell Jones who posted a 50-10 record in her two seasons before leaving to become the head coach at Mercer University, a Division I program in Macon, Ga.

Elliott went 27-57 with the Vikings and has five-year career head coaching record of 55-91. She was the head coach at Cal Baptist, an NAIA school, for two seasons from 2001-2003. She rebuilt the programs a both schools.

After the Vikings went 3-23, including 1-13 in the Big Sky Conference, during her first year in 2004-05, Portland State jumped to 12-16 and 6-8 in the conference during her second season and the Vikings qualified for the Big Sky Tournament.

Portland State finished 12-18 this past season, including an 8-8 mark in the Big Sky.

There's the opening I was looking for. Look for the return of "The Hottie" Sherri Murrell. She's from the Pacific Northwest and did an outstanding job at UOP before the task of trying to resurrect a moribund Wazzu program proved too much for anybody. It's about time she gets back in the game.
