Men's basketball signs exciting recruit
Portland State Basketball Coach Ken Bone has signed a fifth student-athlete to a national letter of intent for the 2006-07 academic year. Bone has signed Deonte Huff, a wing from Antelope Valley College in Lancaster, California.

Huff, a 6-4, 195-pound guard, led the Marauders in scoring, rebounding, assists and steals in 2005-06. Huff shot .535 from the field while averaging 23.2 points per game. He also averaged 7.4 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 2.0 steals while starting 27 of the 28 games in which he played.

A strong player with the ability to get to the basket, Huff shot a remarkable 286 free throw attempts - more than 10 per game. He made 190 for a . 664 free throw percentage.

Huff ranked fourth among California Junior College players in scoring average. He was named first team All-Foothill Conference.

"Deonte gives us instant experience coming in as a transfer," said Bone. "He is an athletic wing that is a good slasher and can really get to the rim. He can also guard the wing well. I believe he will step in and compete for us right away."

they must have signed this guy some time ago, because he's already in lindy's magazine, listed as a "newcomer to watch" at portland state.

huff is going to make the vikes an extremely tough team this year, since they return four starters, including 6'9" anthony washington, 6'11" scott morrison and 6'6" juma kamara. they'll be one of the few big sky teams that can match us in size. lindy's lists washington as first-team all conference, calling him a "developing" big man who should be one of the top interior players in the conference. they beat us in portland the last week of the season last year.

Thursday was enrollment day at Portland State, and the men's basketball team got a serious shot in the arm in the form of two transfers: Jeremiah Dominguez from the University of Portland and J.R. Moore from the University of Rhode Island.

But it was the player who didn't enroll who was most notable: Anthony Washington.

The 6-foot-9, 245-pound junior was the Vikings' strongest player last year, and in the final third of the season helped the team reach the Big Sky Conference playoffs. He averaged 10.6 points, playing 19.7 minutes per game, and nearly beat Eastern Washington by himself in the last game on 7 for 7 shooting and 18 points.

"Anthony has decided to not come back," PSU coach Ken Bone said. "I'm happy for him. He has some new priorities now and other responsibilities he needs to take care of. I've been fortunate enough to know him for a long time and to coach him.

"He's a great young man, and selfishly it would have been great to have his basketball talents here."

Washington transferred to PSU from the University of Washington two years ago, sat out a year, then played for the Vikings last season. He started 21 games.

Moore is a former Benson High School star who spent a year at Worcester (Mass.) Academy before playing three seasons at Rhode Island, The 6-8, 245-pounder averaged 13.9 minutes and 2.7 points last season.

Dominguez is a former Oregon 4A player of the year on South Salem's 2004 state championship team. He played in all 58 games for the Pilots the past two seasons and started four games in 2005-06.

The 5-6 point guard averaged 14.8 minutes in his two years at UP, averaging 3.8 points. He had 65 steals.

Both players must sit out this season before they can become eligible.
