PSU/GRIZ afterthoughts

Being I was much too tired to post during or after this game, here are some impressions. Unlike the Portland game, many more positives, very little negatives. Iwish I could have watched this game to judge better, but refuse to pay for BigskyTV due to all the complaints. Until that is cleared up, they get no $$$$ from me.

Positives: (1) Depth finally showed up in clutch time. Swift and Martin were solid. Mayes was unbelievable . Ellis brings things that do not show up in the stats. His savy and ball handling are so valuable against pressure.
(2) We found heart from many players. 2nd half defense was unreal, and gave PSU fits with very few holes in it (1st half, no comment). More fouls was an indicator of harder play. Then again, hard to gage that due to how tight refs had to be due to last year's game.
(3) We are versatile and can adjust to many styles of play by opposition. PSU has much versatility in being able to go very big or very small. We adjusted well against any personnel they threw at us.
(4) The coaching staff's patience with individuals is beginning to payoff. Martin is doing as asked to do, and becoming very consistent. If need be, he can still light it up when we need him to and he is on fire. Mayes got time, and being productive. Whatever happened prior appears to have been put behind by the coaches and Mayes.
(5) Cam Rundles will make a serious run for BSC newcomer of the year, possibly All-BSC, if this game is an indicator of things to come. What a BSC debut!!! This kid looks like he can play any style or do whatever is needed at any time. Anyone else more impressed by him every game?
(6) Stuart Mayes is a difference maker, when on the court. Here is to hoping all is ironed out for him to be a regular rest of this year and finish his career as he should!!! I have always loved his athleticism and versatility. Too bad for him and the team he has had various off the court issues. He gives an extra dimension defensively being able to defend the opponents best 1, 2, or 3 and takes pressure off Dloughy on both ends of the court. When Dloughy struggles, we have the same type of player in Mayes. That alone should push Dloughy to play better more consistently. I think Swift is every bit as capable talentwise to do this, but still too young to do it! As for Mayes, being he is just now beginning to see PT, I expect the coaches to still experiment with him as for minutes. Fortunately for Mayes, he is perfect size to fit into any type of lineup.

Question Marks:
(1) Chavez- Why no PT? Did he just not fit into defensive matchups being PSU went quicker the majority of game. Did Maye's play keep him on the bench? Did the consistency of Hasquet, Dloughy, and Strait keep him there in this game? I hope it is due to other performances, not Chavez being in trouble or in the doghouse. I like Chavez, and root for him because all he has been through.
(2) Gus Chase- What can he do? Will he be next to nonexistent some games, yet in others be a presence?
(3) Defense- Which defense will show up more often? The 1st half D or the 2nd half D?
(4)Rotation/PT- Beyond Rundles, Ellis, Martin, Dloughy, Strait, Hasquet who is in the rotation consistently? Is rest of rotation, pt, depth going to be determined game to game by opposition matchups? I have a feeling that Mayes and Swift will consistently be part of the rotation. Still wondering about Chavez and Staudacher. Also will remain curious if Vanderjagt will ever be given a chance to see what he can do?

Finally, GREAT GAME!!! Way to get BSC play started. I will be at EWU on Saturday. Thanks guys for making many in GRIZ nation happy again!!! :thumb: :beer2:
