Montana prospect reminds Vikings coach of Everson Griffin

Representatives from 18 NFL teams -- including Minnesota Vikings defensive line coach Andre Patterson -- were present for Montana's pro day on Monday.

The workout was held outdoors in 50-degree temperatures and run on FieldTurf. There were 10 Grizzlies players participating, as well as three more players from area small schools.

Defensive end Tyrone Holmes -- 6-foot-2 1/4, 253 pounds -- ran the 40-yard dash in 4.6 seconds on both attempts. He had a 37 1/2-inch vertical jump and 9-foot-5 broad jump. He did the 20-yard short shuttle in 4.28 seconds and the three-cone drill in 7.1 seconds. He had 28 reps of 225 pounds on the bench press. Holmes led all of FCS in sacks with 18 in 2015, topping the sack totals of some other notable 2016 NFL Draft prospects: South Carolina State's Javon Hargrave (13.5), Stony Brook's Victor Ochi and Southern Utah's James Cowser (13.0), and Eastern Kentucky's Noah Spence (11.5).

The Vikings' Patterson said that Holmes -- who worked out really well at the pro day -- reminded him of Everson Griffin (who is 6-3, 273, and has recorded 40 sacks in six seasons with Minnesota).

Andre Patterson returns to lead the Vikings defensive line for a 2nd season in 2015. Patterson brings 33 years of coaching experience, 12 in the NFL, to the Vikings defensive line. He reunites in Minnesota with Head Coach Mike Zimmer, who worked together in Dallas from 2000-2002 with the Cowboys defense and at Weber State in 1988.

Patterson enters his 2nd stint as the DL coach with the Vikings as he was on staff in 1998-99. Patterson has coached at each level, working as a high school head coach, years as a college head coach and assistant and 12 seasons as an NFL coach. . . . Patterson served as the Defensive Coordinator at Western Washington in 1989. The year before, he coached the defensive line at Weber State for the 1988 season serving under then-Defensive Coordinator Mike Zimmer. Patterson was the Head Coach as St. Monica High School in California in 1987. From 1983-86 he was the Defensive Coordinator at Renton High School in Washington. Patterson began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at his alma mater, Montana, in 1982. A native of Richmond, CA, Patterson and his wife, Donna, reside in suburban Minneapolis with their daughter, Ashmera and son, Andre, Jr. Patterson earned his bachelor’s degree in Secondary Education from Montana in 1983. He played collegiately as an offensive lineman at Contra Costa College and Montana before suffering a career-ending knee injury.

It says "offense lineman" but I thought he was a Griz DT.
 
In terms of a Vikings fit, Coach Zimmer loves athletes on defense. Everyone was saying Anthony Barr was a "tweener" going into his draft and he now may be the best 4-3 OLB in the NFL. I hope the Vikings draft Holmes and throw him into the fire as a third down pass rusher. By the way, I hate the word "tweener". I use it when evaluating players but I hate it (so I hate myself?). Tweener is basically another way of saying "I don't like this player's weight".
 
I have NEVER liked a player for the Viqueens and only respected AP and Moss. Fran was b4 my time but I would've felt the same about him. I guess that'll have to change.

That would be a hell of a good time. Competitive games, the tailgates would only get better as the fanbases got more acquainted. Recruits would love the big-game environment. Would be great for both programs.
 
That is a great idea, Bison--the two of us playing annually in a home-on-home deal like the one we just concluded makes a helluva a lot more sense, not to mention it is a lot easier on UM's wallet, than flying our beloved GRIZ to the East Coast or The South to play Liberty, Maine, Appalachian State, etc., which we have done in the past, including last year !!!
 
I called my NFL scout buddy to ask him where the Panthers have Holmes ranked. He does not recruit this area of the country, but knows about Holmes and how they have him ranked, but does not want to reveal their grades on Holmes this close to the draft. He revealed their grade to me, but I will not throw him under the bus by posting it here.

solid post.....all we get is that you want people to believe you know someone.....albeit not in the UM athletic dept........
 
I truly hope Holmes does become a Viking - would totally make my day. It was a sad day for me when the Vikings let Colt Anderson slip away!
 
My scout buddy looked puzzled when I asked him about Holmes. However, he did confirm that there's a river two miles to the east of my current location.
