Granted,I was not there live, but here is what I am thinking thus far based on the articles in the Missoulian and the Canadian papers.
Prior this tourney I wanted to see the following accomplished, (1) Improved rebounding (2) Improved defense (3) Lots of minutes for the new players (4) inside scoring. From what I seen in the paper 1-3 very much accomplished, with 2 hard to judge on paper. With Taylor possibly being better than expected. Also Stocktons assist numbers for his minutes are very impressive. With CET, Taylor, and Stockton it looks like we have no worries about ball distribution and running the court. Add Johnson to this mix with Staudachers shooting and that is a deadly guard rotation. Taylor can see minutes at 3 too. Ward appears to be BSC ready as a True Freshman. McGillis, Vassy, and Taylor will give us very good SF rotation too. Another positive, it appears the GRIZ have learned to keep the switch "ON" in being able to put away teams as expected. I think that is more due to the depth at all positions this year though. Now onto a few concerns.
Inside scoring consistency within the offensive design (not counting rebounds) appears to need improving. I am impressed with Qvales averages but by the sounds of it is productivity was more from his size advantage than the team getting him the ball consistently. It looks as if Selvig is more into shooting from the perimeter than scoring inside. With our Guards and sf's we do not need big men seeing and shooting that many 3's. With the exception being Hasquet when he is in the zone, he puts up points in bunches when on fire. Speaking of Hasquet, with Qvale and Selvig being so young, I hope we see him be willing to be our main inside scoring presence early in the year and when called on. To this stage in his career that is the one thing he has yet to prove on the court consistently. I am referring to him posting up and scoring inside, not rebounding. He has proven himself to me to be a very good rebounder. Sharp also will have to prove himself in this aspect, and become much more consistent.
Rebounding wise Vassy, McGillis, and Ward should help our bigs well rebounding. On paper this team looks great. It appears to have strengthened our weaknesses from last year. However, I see one HUGE achilles heel this year. Inside scoring has to be addressed collectively as a team, even if that means Hasquet doing it, or posting up our Guards and SF's if need be. They have plenty of time to work on this collectively, and come regular season we better see it. If not, we may be in for another roller coaster ride, with more highs than lows though.
