Pre-Spring Camp Confidence Index

So I've posted this for a while on the club side, but figured it'll get better discussion here.

Here's how I put last year together.

Post Spring

1. Wide Receiver - Akem is the best WR in the Big Sky, depth is awesome.
2. Safety - Solid 2 deep with a mix of hitters and rangy athletes
3. Quarterback - Humphrey's late spring rise has me feeling better here about depth
4. Linebacker - Best defender on the team in Olson and blossoming young talent
5. Cornerback - If Hemphill and Egbo carry this spring over, we might just be ok
6. Tight End - 3 solid dudes but not flashy, the perfect group of Hauck TEs haha
7. Kicker/Punter - We should be good with Purdy, Wilson a mixed bag
8. Offensive Line - Same 5 guys took every 1st team rep, depth is a worry as always
9. Running back - Knight's 3rd scrum was good, still think Graves needs to be here
10. D-line - Young and inexperienced, no stand-out edge rusher

End of Fall Camp (edited down)

1. Wide Receiver - Stacked with 6 reliable options, Toure is going to have a monster September, They can rotate in the backups and they'll still produce damn well.

2. Safety - Just like WR, there's 6 guys here that are all rock solid.

3. Quarterback - Sneed's the man, he controls the offense and is a big time leader. Humphrey has had a great fall camp.

4. Linebacker - Olson/Lewis are a top notch combo, Welnel and Matthews + Flink and some others behind them are good too.

5. Tight End - We've got 3 guys here that will rotate around, they block, they catch, they're all the right size. I would imagine they'll have some fun putting these guys into use.

6. Kicker/Punter - Punts for the most part are looking good, high, and with long hang times. Purdy and Pepp are both making most of their kicks.

7. Offensive Line - Making gains! Run lanes are opening up where they weren't before, there's a handful of 2-deep guys that can come in if called upon. A little meaner, a lot tougher, and with the depth to go.

8. Cornerback - The reason I'm knocking this group down so far is that Calhoun and Nash have appeared to be just fine, but I personally have not seen either take that "next step" to suggest they're ready to be shut down corners.

9. Running Back - No one took the job that I saw this fall. Ostmo made the biggest move, from a for sure red-shirt to probably a rotation guy. I know Coach Green is excited about them, I was just wanting to see someone really rise up, and that didn't seem to happen to me.

10. Defensive Line - They're young, they're a little dinged up at the start of the season, and the edge rush job appears to maybe be a little up in the air still.

Fun to look back and see where I was feeling about the team and where I was dead wrong (running back!)

More gut-feel from carry over here, I'll update post-spring but here's where I'm at:

1. Wide Receiver - When you have Akem and Toure, rising star Roberts, plus Sulser back and some new up and comers, you have to love where you're at.

2. Running back - Knight and Ostmo, nuff said. Loss of Eastwood for depth sucks but we've got Turner and Arnston. Could Jancaro or Harris break through this year?

3. Safety - Starting battery of Fouch / Hauck / Robertson is solid, Crow returns, young guys after that. Loss of Sandry to graduation and McGinnis to an academic opportunity is a challenge. Lots of youth that should rise to the occasion.

4. Defensive Line - Gubner, Deming, and Alford should make the next step. Edge rushers in O'Connell, Babros, Mamula will battle to start. Can McGourin grab a spot starting? Hurlburt and Brown could push - but lack experience.

5. Tight End - Rensvold should return, Deming is solid. Elwell and Grossman could make strides forward. Good run blockers here, can the more experienced guys emerge and more reliable pass-catchers too?

6. Quarterback - Humphrey had 2 good starts, the 3rd against Idaho was rough. Beyond his QB play can he take a vocal leadership role like Sneed did? Patterson and Brown behind him are unproven but here and appear to be full of talent.

7. Kicker/Punter - Purdy's a dude, we're good. Pep has a leg too. Who's the punter?

8. Offensive Line - The team has 3-4 tackles that should be ready, but can they go from holding their own to being solid protectors and blockers? Interior OL has 3 guys that have started games. Need a center to step up. Lots of younger guys fighting for depth. Are they ready?

9. Linebacker - Jace Lewis should snap into Olson's tackle machine roll. Who's after that? Rumor is Graves might land here. There's Welnel, Matthews, Flink, Vahoe, Hill, and others... but lots of guys that have never started a single game at LB. Can they make that next step?

10. Cornerback - Two new transfers that should fight for the job. Corbin Walker is a guy we'll need to really take the next step. Loss of Egbo and Nash really hurt. Fairly unknown spot right now.

Buschini (spelling) from Helena is going to pick up punting duties right where Wilson left off. He will be a stud.

Only one guy in the roster listed as a center & it’s not the guy who backed up Sirmon this past season. I do expect the o-line to continue progressing, but it’s going to be interesting to see who they plug in there.

Grossman was a 3 star receiver in HS if memory serves & was the surprise of one or another camp last season as a defensive end before the McConnell emerged. I’d think if he focused as much on getting back into receiver mode as he did in bulking up for last season, you could have a breakout star.

Graves is too light now to play LB, but could easily fit into the safety rotation with McG moving on.

QB competition should be interesting given Bobby’s history.

So lucky to have the Swiss Army knife of kicking with Wilson. Does it take two guys to replace his productivity?

My only other question is how much James contributed to the analysis?

Couple things; O'Connell is the stud DE who found his way from something called University of Mary to the Griz and will be All-Big Sky this season. Graves is about the size of Josh Buss when he started contributing and he was a "decent" LB. In regards to Wilson do you mean "Swiss army knife" because he did KO and punting? It won't take two guys to replace him; Purdy is best kicker in the BSC who doesn't kick at altitude, and Buschini is going to be outstanding, either one can get the KO deep enough that Bobby's coverage team will be stopping guys inside their own 20. You are dead right about Grossman and yet he is probably the 4th best TE on the roster, the future is bright. GO GRIZ

Little known fact: Wilson kicked with both feet. Kid was a weapon.

I'm hoping simultaneously.

& for the record, mine was a couple of things. Yours - five or six. I’m good when you mix metaphors, but I get really agitated when “things” go undercounted.

True it was not my best work, every painting can't be a masterpiece.

Brian Buschini is a stud, should not see any drop off in the punt game. He is a super nice kid, great family. He and my son have become friends since Brians high school sr year. He played for Helena and my son will be a jr this coming season with Glacier.

I’d like to see Grossman go back to that REB/DE position instead of TE because he looked really good there during Spring and Fall camp but injuries forced him to move to TE for depth purposes.
