I always order two pre-season magazines:

1. Blue Ribbon Yearbook

Tons and tons of information on the Big Sky. The magazines you can get in the stores offer little-to-no analysis on the Big Sky other than returning players and stats.

I got my Blue Ribbon Yearbook yesterday.

2. EWU
3. Montana
4. ISU
5. PSU
6. NAU
7. SAC

I mostly agree with this. ISU will be good and will have a very good frontcourt. However, their backcourt is quite inexperienced and raises a lot of questions in my mind. Can they be in the top 4? Maybe.

PSU will have the best athletes. They always do. However, good athletes are not always good basketball players. Middle of the pack somewhere.

Nau will be better than most are thinking. They will have a chance to finish in the top 4.

Sac is listed about right. They are using the same formula as PSU. They will be quite young this year.

The cats, UNC and Idaho are probably the bottom dwellers but I have no idea who might be the worst. I feel that Idaho will not be as bad as everyone is thinking.

With Moody coming back, UM has the best guards, but they will be playing a lot of small ball. Might work out for the Grizz, who knows?

Weber has all five starters back and there is a real chance that two of them will now be coming off the bench. Weber looks good on paper, but that is not where the games are played. They still have to prove it up.

October is just around the corner. Toss it up and let's go.

I consider Weber State to be the clear favorites, a team that could possibly rank within the top 100 D1 teams by most rating services.
Every other Big Sky team seems to have lost key players, so I'd think there might be some parity as the season shapes up.
Re: the Griz, with so many new players, I confess, I have no idea...

I spent some time over the weekend considering the rankings... or how I would rank teams...

1. Weber State
.
.
.
.
.
2. Eastern Washington
3. Montana
4. Idaho State
5. Portland State
.
.
.
.
.
6. Sacramento State
7. Northern Arizona
8. Montana State
.
.
.
9. Idaho
10. Northern Colorado

I think Weber State is the clear class of the conference, just by how few unknowns they have. That being said, they struggled immensely offensively last year with a lot of who is returning. But it is to hard to argue against the Verplanken-Jones combo.

The second tier could go in any direction. I like Montana and Eastern as being most capable of challenging Weber, but both teams have very large holes they have to fill. Idaho State might have one of the better front courts in the league and Portland State is freakishly athletic per usual.

That third tier is replete with teams who are replacing a lot of lost talent, and I could see Sacramento State and Montana State as a teams that could finish anywhere from 3 to the bottom of the conference. Northern Arizona feels underrated a bit, only because they were within a game of the NCAA tournament after under performing last year, but they lost Cone and that is a lot to replace.

Idaho and NC are teams on full rebuild. Idaho will be improved, but they have a long, long way to go. NC lost its best scorer to the portal and they just didn't get a ton of help from their freshman class last year.

Here's how I'd rank it:

1. Weber State - Clearly the odds on favorites to be preseason #1. It would be stunning to see anybody else ranked first in the preseason. I will say though that I don't think Weber is immortal. They don't have that feel to them where they're just gonna bulldoze everyone in the conference. I think they're gonna play a lot of close games and they're gonna get everyone's best shot. The Griz were a bad inbounds play away from sweeping them last year, Eastern split with them last year, so they can be beat. If you limit Dillon Jones and make everybody else on the team beat you, then you're gonna have a chance.

2. Montana - I give us the edge over Eastern mainly because I have some questions about Eastern's backcourt after the losses of Venters and Allegri. I like the addition of Giordan Williams for the Griz backcourt, I think that's a much needed upgrade at the 2 spot over Martin. Losing Bannan definitely hurts but I think Te'Jon Sawyer has the potential to be that Jamar Akoh piece that this front court has been missing for quite some time. If that's the case, then I think the Griz are true contenders with Weber. The returning pieces with Moody, Whitney, and DT will all be great for the Griz and if Sawyer and Williams live up to the billing, then we can go toe to toe with Weber for the conference title.

3. Eastern Washington - Like usual, I think Eastern will be tough as hell and will be in the conversation for the title race. As I mentioned above, I have questions about their backcourt. Those were 2 dynamic guys and I'm sure they got 2 guys waiting in the wings that will also be very good players because that's what they do, but I don't know who those guys are, so for now I got them in the 3 spot behind Weber and the Griz.

4. Sacramento State - David Patrick has hit some home runs in the portal, and it's only a matter of time until it all starts to click, and I think this is the year you start to see that. I don't think Sac State will be a true contender this season, but I do think they have a chance to really disrupt things in the conference race, and they had their moments last year. They're close, but I still think they're a year away.

5. Montana State - This is where I think you start to see the separation. Outside the top 4, I don't think there's anyone else that's a major threat. I got the cats at 5 because although they have a completely new staff and roster, I do think they're gonna be competitive and should beat the teams they're supposed to beat. Matt Logie seemed to put a big emphasis on 3 point shooting and perimeter players, but I really don't think they have any kind of inside threat like they have had with Belo. They really only have 1 real big guy they brought in, and not much behind him. I expect the cats to be middle of the pack.

6. Portland State - I think PSU will be improved but they just kind of are what they are and I need to see more from them before I start believing.

7. Idaho State - I'm not as high on ISU as many of you are. They got crushed by graduation and I think they have a lot of unknowns. I could certainly see a scenario where they jump up and are better than PSU and the cats, but for now I'm putting ISU behind both of them.

8. Northern Arizona - Jalen Cone was the straw that stirred the drink for NAU, and now that he's gone I think NAU is really gonna struggle. I expect it to be tough sledding in Flagstaff this season.

9 - Idaho. I really like the hire of Alex Pribble, but it's gonna take some time for him to get them back on track. Long road ahead.

10 - Northern Colorado - What a fall from grace for UNC. They did absolutely nothing of value this offseason to improve their team. Is Steve Smyley in over his head? I'm thinking he might be. Good luck to them.

That’s a great synopsis! I think this Griz team will be fun to watch develop.

I sat in on Weber's practice today. We spent 30 minutes working on defensive strategies for shutting down a one shooter team. We spent another 30 minutes working on a strategy for shutting down a team that runs a staggered pick and dive offense. Can't say who those teams might be, but it was impressive to see how our guys responded to the coaching. Another 30 minutes were spent on transition O and D.

Gunna be a fun year. Can't hardly wait. One month and counting. :thumb:

Actually, I think it was for one or two shooters from three. My guess is it would be based on how many three point shooters a team has who shoot over 33%. The strategy woud be different if a team could put 3 or more guys out there who could shoot a high percentage. There are probaly a few teams who will only have a couple of guys who are true threats from three on the floor at any given time. The staggered pick and dive offense was one I saw less frequently last year. I'm fairly sure I know who they were preparing for, I just don't want to say. You can speculate if you want. Doesn't really matter. I'm sure that all BSC teams are preparing to defend all of their opponents. Some teams are just harder to prepare for. Often, teams will put new wrinkles into their attack for each opponent and ingame adjustments have to be incorporated.

I really like to get into the minutia of what is going on and the strategies being incorporated. It makes the game more enjoyable for me. In the past, Weber has had coaches who would install a new plays and new out of bounds plays for each game. He wanted to insure that the opponent had a difficult time preparing. To see and prepare for all of his plays you would have to review games from the past three years. We were always better on Thursdays because we had more time to prepare. That coach could beat anyone if he had a week to prepare. It was when he only had a day or two that it got more iffy. :geek:

Moody will be one who will get everyones attention. You are not going to shut a guy like that down. You just hope to slow him down a bit and disrupt what everyone else is doing. Also. he is not the only shooter the Griz have. Your 4 man was hitting them on us last year and your other guards can shoot when left open. Your Griz are well coached and are never easy to guard. One of the reasons NAU did as well in Boise was that they always had 3 or 4 guys on the floor that could hit an outside shot. If you have to be honest in guarding the outside, it opens thing up for taking it to the rim. Of course it helps to have guys able to take it to the hoop. Several years ago, we had a wing player who was shooting a very low percentage from the arc. Coach asked him to back off on taking so many 3s. He said: 'But coach, they are leaving me open.' Coach said: 'Exactly.'

Damn, I love basketball.
