Pre-Season National Champs

What is the backup qb situation looking like at MSU and would they bring another transfer in? If I were Lamson, I would stay at MSU. He has already been in the FBS and he is doing a lot better at MSU. From what I hear, Taco Dowler is probably staying as well. Those 2 guys have a strong connection.

ISU also lost that WR that was cooking the cat secondary

Really is a meaningless question. The defending champion is always ranked number one. Doesn’t matter who leaves in the portal or graduates. Cats will rightfully be ranked first next fall.

Though far from perfect they deserved to be first this year. The cats had a hell of a team. They earned it.

As to that earlier comment about the Buffs, this year’s Beeezon were good but not nearly as good as some of their previous teams. Certainly not the best team in the country. That said, msu has not shown that they can beat the buffs this century. Little reason they would have this year. So they probably should send an ENORMOUS donation to the Illinois State athletic department.

Not true my man. I would hope you remember 2001 when we won the championship - we were ranked #3 the following year (lost Edwards and a ton of starters). NDSU won the chip in 2012 but were ranked #2 going into next season. James Madison won in 2016 but was ranked #3 in the preseason poll due to the loss of a significant amount of NFL talent through graduation.

The cats have earned nothing for the 2026 season. The team that won the national championship is not the same. It is an entirely new season and teams have historically, and rightfully, been ranked based on their upcoming rosters. MMW - if Lamson leaves, there is NO WAY msu is ranked #1.
 
Too Early 2026 Preseason Poll:

#1 Montana State
#2 North Dakota State
#3 🤷‍♂️
#4 🤷‍♂️
#5 🤷‍♂️

Montana will definitely be in the top 5 to start the 2026 season, but I don't know if it'll be 3, 4, or 5. My guess either 3 or 4.

Cat-Griz fan you are correct.

I was generalizing. More often than not the previous champ gets the nod in next fall’s poll. It’s not set in stone by any means. As you note, if Lamson jumps ship to UCLA or elsewhere then it’s far less likely msu gets the number one votes

All great points. Vigen and the cats were written off by most. As ridiculous as it sounds, losing Tommy might’ve been the best thing for that team. Having a quarterback who can actually throw a forward pass finally made them balanced. Their second string looked terrible against the twos when he got playing time. If Lamson takes a bag and they roll with that guy, their chances of being elite go WAY down.

I think griz fans can keep hoping the cats are going to suck because one guy leaves, but I think they will just keep reloading.
