Post Game: stuff the run, win ugly, keep it going

First half play may be the worst I have seen at the stadium. The north end zone was anemic, just sitting on there butts. Pregame sucks, no Let’s get ready to rumble to pump the crowd up. Monte did come out before the game in a Jeep but the hey hey hey was worthless and then was non existent until the Monte movie.
We score a touch down and then immediately followed by two commercials..
Maybe I am just disappointed in what I saw today, but Washington Griz used to have magic, things just feel different. Game day experience is not the same, the crown is just not into it and volume is down a couple of notches.

I too felt the blah in the stadium yesterday. While I can't speak for everyone, here is my experience. Typically on game days I'm a nervous wreck before the game, cheer loudly and annoy my seat neighbors during the game, and God forbid we lose, I'm a broken mess for several days afterwards (just ask my wife).

All that being said, I just could not get excited for yesterday's game. All morning I was just not pumped to go. When I got there it was just like let's get this over with so we can focus on next week. The atrocious timing of the possession changes and subsequent TV timeouts also sapped any energy out of the crowd. Folks in my section were all talking about it and we all felt just ho-hum about the game. I still don't know 100% why, but I think it was all due to opponent. I sense the team felt about the same.

Anyhow glad it's over and they gutted one out. I'm already more excited for this week's game than I was for yesterday's game. I'll be there yelling, cursing the refs, and back in full form this weekend. Hell, I'm already pacing the floor. Sorry Griz for mailing that one in, already pumped for this weekend.

Do games even count any more if moron coaches don’t throw clipboards at fans?

My seats are a few rows behind the visiting-team bench. None of the Dixie State coaches carried a clipboard, nor were they wearing fancy small pants.

No wonder the gameday experience suffered!

- Solid all-purpose day for Junior Bergen who I think has officially foregone his ability to take a redshirt this season. I have a feeling we’re going to see a lot more of this dude moving forward, he’s a good pass-catching mis-match. He’s not the RB of the future, so I’ll save some critique on a few decisions when given a handoff – especially some of the pitches today.

Go Griz!
Not yet; Bergen has played in 4 games. But suspect he will be needed in more as strapped as we are.

Well, it wasn’t pretty, especially in the first half – but the Griz are back on track with a win against Dixie State. Montana, especially the offense, seemed to be reeling early – possibly still stung from the EWU game, but as the game went on the OL wore down Dixie’s front and the Griz pulled away. In an all-things funky week I guess we also deserved a funky game too, right?

Kris Brown’s first career start wasn’t the prettiest by any measure. His first half had a few drives get going but ending in a sack/fumble, a stopped 3rd and short on a Bergen run, 2 three and outs, an interception, a fieldgoal drive, and a short field drive that ended with a failed fake fieldgoal. His first lost fumble was a tough one, the edge looked to get right beyond any blockers and hit Kris just right. The pick was ugly, into double coverage, seemed maybe he was expecting man coverage and the corner handed off the WR into some sort of a zone. In the 2nd half more of his possessions were fruitful. The following 4 possessions got Montana into scoring position, the first was a missed field goal, but then the next 3 possessions wound up scoring 3 touchdowns and putting the game away. Brown would lose a 3rd turnover on another sack-fumble that turned into a scoop and score – that one was tough but hopefully he’ll learn when the pocket has collapsed like that he needs to just secure the ball, take the loss, and move on. For the most part, 2nd half Kris Brown looked more poised, calm, and efficient. Who knows if he’s our guy the rest of the way – or just for a handful of weeks – but if we can get that type of play from him we’ll be good.

I’m not sure what’s going on with the O-line, and maybe it’s nothing, but for a group I expected to be totally dominant, they’ve had their issues – and today showed that some more as well. Almost 191 rushing isn’t too shabby, but 3.3 ypc isn’t the best number. Dixie also tallied 4 sacks – two of which resulted in turnovers, and one even scoring a defensive TD. We’ve got a veteran group on this OL and we need these guys to be the anchor in the face of a lot of youth at QB/RB, I’m hoping we can get some improvement here in the weeks ahead. More physical defensive fronts are on the horizon, is this OL up to the challenge?

Injuries are part of the game but damn, this team can’t catch much luck it seems. Childs hurt again on 1 play, we’re down a handful of D-linemen, Roberts still out, a few more guys left the field today with injuries as well – hopefully nothing serious.

Injuries aside though the defense seemed to get back to their dominant ways, after a shaky first drive that ended in a great Ford INT the defense really locked down until it was garbage time. Ford had a pretty solid day as well, forcing and recovering a fumble too. Maybe it was me but the linebackers seemed a little stiff and caught by surprise at times when blitzing – Dixie seemed to employ what EWU was doing in the 2nd half of the game, using the RB to cut block and keeping TEs in for more protection too. All that aside they still dialed up some good pressure and were really disruptive to the Dixie offense. Dixie had 8 consecutive possessions without a first down – that’s damn impressive for the defense, I don’t care who they’re playing.

A few other observations:

- Another 100+ day on the ground for Xavier, he’s looking better each week. Hopefully that late walk-off was just a cramp. With the RB room practically all walking wounded we’re going to have to really lean on X until we can get some help for him.

- Career day for Cole Grossman, 70 yards and 1 TD, almost a 2nd TD as well. Him and Brown seem to have a good connection, hopefully they can keep going with that. Grossman is showing what a mismatch he can become.

- Nice punt return for Robby, a few shaky returns for Keelan.

- Not the greatest day in the red zone for the Montana offense, but I’m not going to lose sleep over it, a failed fake field goal and another missed kick too.

- Just 35 Dixie rushing yards on 28 attempts, wow.

My closing thought, moving forward, the offense cannot have this bad of a first half. You cannot put up just 3 points in a half and have 2 turnovers (and eventually 3 total) in any road game or against Sac or MSU. That’s how a team that one *should* beat, hangs on and wins a game. Hell, that’s what practically happened to Washington when we played them. This was a strange day and we have so much youth an inexperience on offense, so hopefully that shakiness fades, and fast.

There’s a lot to worry and complain about, but we’re talking about a somewhat ugly win. There’s quite a few other teams, including 3 top 10 teams so far that are having to assess where they’re at following a loss. I’d damn sure rather be talking about improvements needed after a win.

Sac State is next, we’ll need a much better showing from Griz fans out there as well – so plan it and let’s pack Wa Griz next week.

Go Griz!

Nice update. However, I do not agree with your O-Line assessment. Look at the left side. They are blowing guys off the line. We left a lot of production on the field. Running the ball some 55 times needs to produce much better results, especially with the domination of that left side of the line. They are pretty impressive to my eyes.

Hey, one final thought: I thought Patterson really looked good out there....are we sure he's not the better option? 8-) 8-) 8-) 8-)

I mean, he IS the defacto "backup QB" right now....ostensibly the most popular guy on the team....

I’m honestly stunned there isn’t 3 threads advocating for Patterson to start already on here. Is eGriz feeling ok?

Oh, it’s slipping, bro. It’s slipping. To the point that my sarcastic posts are now being taken by many as ACTUAL posts. It’s embarrassing, really. I’m embarrassed FOR eGrizzers…

Go Griz!

Pet peeve of mine when it comes to college statistics. A good pass rush should not impact rushing statistics. Why do sacks count against rushing yards? They should either count against total yards, or passing yards, as it is a passing play.

So, I think the rushing stat needs some more context. The lead RB ran for 56 yards on 3.7 YPC. Coming into the game he was averaging 3.9 YPC, so our defense did slightly better than the other defenses averaged against Dixie coming in. They certainly didn’t do bad, but I wouldn’t view it as exceptional either. Dixie just isn’t very good.

Furthermore, while Xavier Harris is, I think, a very good RB…our OL has issues. We are the only team so far where the lead rusher hasn’t been able to break 5 YPC against Dixie (Harris was at 4.1, Bergen at 3.1). We did not run the ball well against Dixie, and that’s a concern because Brown needs pressure taken off of him.

Trying to understand your logic, so if the QB drops back to pass and scrambles for a gain of 35 yards, that gain should go into passing yards? Most people consider a passing play to be one that actually involves a forward pass.

I agree. Wouldn’t the only way that would work is if quarterbacks were never allowed to run? Because if they are allowed to run if they need, then if they get sacked it should most definitely count as negative rushing yards.

Maybe I’m missing what PT was trying to say?

Wahlberg: I dislike the term “garbage time” reference to players who you and the rest of us know work their asses off. They are beginning to be one’s and two’s now!

I don't think "garbage time" is necessarily a dig at the players. I feel it has to do with the actual time and statistics of that time of the game. Coaches change things up at the end of a game when the win is in hand.

That’s a good point. So when a QB scrambles and gains yards, he turns into a runner. If he gets sacked, it’s still a passing play. That was my logic, at least. That’s the way the NFL does it.

As an example, look at Justin Herbert’s stat line. He passed for 398 yards, sacked twice for a loss of 17, scrambled/ran 4 times for 29 yards. In the box score it has Herbert passing for 398 yards, but the team passing stats list 381 yards. Under college stats he would have rushed 6 times for 12 yards. I think the NFL version is more accurate as far as how the game went, personally.

TL/DR: A sack is a negative result of a passing play and should count against team passing stats, a scramble is a positive (yardage wise) result of a pass play that turned into a run play, and thus, should be counted as a run gain, statistically.

I'll step in for our apparently migrated south for the winter, fine feathered friend.

1. It's obvious to anybody who knows the game that Patterson is the best QB option that the Griz have. I've talked to several coaches around the state, not going to mention any names, but they all agree that he is an FBS talent.
2. Until you see him with the starters there is no way to judge him.
3. 1/1 is clearly better completion rate than a pedestrian 20/30.
4. If you disagree with me you are; gay, liberal, socialist and possibly Canadian.

Also I know some super secret big news on a thing that will happen at an undetermined time in the near future. But I can't say anything more on that subject.

I’ve also heard about this thing but I’m not at liberty to say anything except something will happen sometime in the future.

BTW Sask I came across your best to wear the number posts from last October a few nights ago while battling insomnia. Great work. Lots of names that brought back a lot of good Griz football memories.
