okay, we couldn't shoot the damned ball (and remember, our bad shooting percentage included four or five breakaway dunks, which means our shooting percentage was even worse than it was), and we couldn't make free throws, and we got outrebounded decisively by a smaller team.

the positive takeaway is, for the first time in memory at montana, we can go small with a super-quick team capable of pressing all over the court, and getting us back in games. down seven, we went with cherry, autry, jamarr and steward, and they really disrupted u.s.f. of course, cherry, autry and jamarr all played on teams that won state championships in california. imagine the havoc they'll wreak in the big sky.

but boy, was that a lousy offensive performance. we miss a.j. and our free throw shooters didn't look much different from the kids shooting for tee-shirts at halftime.

in his post-game show, the u.s.f. coach praised cherry and qvale. said they'd both be all-league in the wcc.

“It was their (the Dons’) night,” Tinkle said. “But I’m really, really proud of the grit, the toughness and the heart we showed on the road, in a tough environment to battle back and give ourselves a chance to win the game.”

We’re going to learn from it,” Tinkle said. “We showed some toughness and we can build from that amount of toughness that we showed.”

Citay: You need to help Tinks with his post game comments by polishing his script. I swear I have heard the same post game comments more than once when the griz lost games that they should have won. I still don't know why Selvig can't develope a more inside game. A 7 foot 3 pt gunner just seems weird. I don't mind him taking 3's but 10 in one game. I would like Tinks to verbalize what the team learned from the USF loss. Also where was the toughness. They got smoked on the boards by a smaller team.

bobaloo: no, i gotta agree with tinkle on this one. we did scratch back from seven down when it looked like we had no hope, and we did put ourselves in a position to win the game. we showed plenty of heart, and i still love this team. we just couldn't shoot the damned ball or make critical free throws.

and, no, i gotta disagree too about selvig. he shot 40% on ten threes, and except for cherry stealing the ball, was our only reliable offensive threat, and only dependable three-point shooter. selvig is out of the european tradition of big men, and he looks perfectly legit shooting threes. in fact, the usf fan sitting in front of me was screaming the entire game for his guy to get on selvig, and cursed him every time selvig drained one. that three point shot was open mostly because usf really sagged on qvale.

but nobody on this team shoots like a.j. or staudacher. even when he missed, staudacher looked like a shooter. except for selvig, these guys just look like they're heaving it up there, good luck.

rats! why did i mention a.j.? put him in for wood, and you've really got a high-profile team, a guy to snap you out of a scoring slump, a go-to guy shooting free throws down the stretch. hack-a-shaq is going to become hack-a-pack when opposing coaches play montana.

There is nothing positive to take from this game...experience on the road, I suppose...but a gym with 1200 fans, a bad game against a team suffering from injuries....let's hope OSU is a Griz win...
