Portland State Regular Season Prediction

Griz til I die

Alright, Big Sky media days are this weekend in Spokane and it's finally starting to feel like Football season as we're right around the corner. We're down to the final four Big Sky team previews as today we'll do PSU, Sac State next week, followed by Davis, and close with Weber. I've said this a number of times throughout the previews that I think PSU will be the worst team in the. No idea who the QB is gonna be, but they have big shoes to fill replacing Davis Alexander. I have heard that Barney has brought in a wrath of transfers this offseason, but I couldn't even begin to tell you at what positions or which side of the ball. Also, I think what you see with Barney is what you're gonna get at this point. I was very high on his team last year, and they were very underwhelming. He's had years to build the program now, and he's just been stuck in neutral, and with a new AD coming in, it makes you wonder what the future of the program is as a whole, but we can talk about that at a later date. With that, let's dive in:

September 1 @ San Jose State - L. The Spartans aren't as awful as they once were. They won the MWC in 2020, only to come back down to earth last season, but they're certainly not the 1-11, 0-12 program they once were before Brent Brennan. They were 5-7 last season, and I would expect them to be around the same again this season. If this were one of the better Big Sky teams like the Griz or the cats, then I would probably pick the upset here, but PSU has a lot of question marks that I don't have answers too. I think it could be a long night for the Viks. Give me the Spartans.

September 10 @ Washington - L. Ain't no god damn way UW loses to a Big Sky school 2 years in a row  granted they're not playing a Big Sky team anywhere near the caliber of last year's UM team, but I sincerely hope that last years loss to the Griz is a good wake up call to the Dawgs to not overlook these FCS teams anymore. I would imagine with a new coaching staff (Kalen Deboer coming over from Fresno State) that they will not let this happen. Plus PSU is not as good as the Griz. UW rolls in this one.

September 17 BYE. Good week to have it. Sandwiched in between UW and UM.

September 24 @ Montana - L. I will never say never, but I'd be shocked if the Viks win this game. It's on homecoming, so it should be a rowdy crowd, however we all remember what happened when PSU came in on Homecoming in 2018. That said, this Griz team is much different then the 2018 Griz team. Griz win this one no problem.

October 1 vs. Northern Arizona - L. This is a really tough 4 games to start the season with. 3 really difficult road games, and you don't even play your first home game until October 1st. I'm very high on NAU and I don't see how PSU wins this game. Give me the Jacks.

October 8 vs. Lincoln - W. I know absolutely nothing about this team. I couldn't even tell you what level of Football they play. I sincerely hope for Barney's case, they do not drop this game. That would not be a good look. I would imagine the Viks would roll in this one.

October 15 vs. Weber State - L. Not very often PSU gets 3 consecutive home games, so that'll be a nice change of scenery after starting the season off with 3 consecutive road games. Too bad they're not gonna win this game.

October 22 @ Idaho - L. The Viks have always played UI pretty tough, especially in the Kibbie dome. They'll most likely be 1-5 going into this game, so god only knows how their morale and spirits will be headed into this one. I don't see how they win this game. Vandy's take it at home.

October 29 @ Eastern Washington - L. Ya, kind of the same story. I just really don't see their hearts being in it anymore at this point in the season.

November 5 vs. Northern Colorado - W. This is pretty much their only other shot at a win this season. If they fail to win this one at home, maybe it is time to shake things up a little bit in Portland. Having only 1 win on the season coming against a non-D1 would not be a good feeling. I really am not sure PSU can win this game when the Bears have Jacob Sirmon at QB and Elijah Elliott at RB, but you know what? I'll take a chance on the Viks and say they win this game at home.

November 12 vs. Sacramento State - L. Man I would love nothing more then to watch PSU play spoiler in this one and potentially watch Sac State choke away the conference title and watch Troy Taylor just lose his shit  however, it's too good to be true. Sac State should just fold up shop and call it a year if they drop this one. Hornets should roll in this one!

November 19 @ Cal Poly - L. I think Cal Poly right now is a better team than Portland State. Maybe if this game was in Portland, I would consider taking the Viks, but I don't see them going on the road and winning this one.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

I got Portland State going 2-9, and that may be generous. I think their ceiling is 3-8 and the floor is 1-10, and that may be the most likely outcome. It's not gonna be much of an eventful season for the few Viks fans out there. This is a tough schedule, and with not a lot of playmakers on this team (that I know any way), it's hard to see how they can win any of these tougher games. That's my prediction, thoughts?????

PSU is one of those strange teams. They picked up a fair number of JC and FBS drop downs, a few with pretty good experience. Their defense is looking more on the stout side and it looks like it’s been an area of emphasis as far as transfers are concerned. Plus there are a few returning All-Big Sky/All/American picks. Are they gonna be good? Who knows.

They picked up a SR RB from Boise State that has some pretty good stats for a non-starter. With they picked up a bunch of OL in the transfer portal. Combined with a decent WR corps, it looks like they will try to be pretty balanced on the offensive side of the ball. I don’t expect them to be a ground and pound team, although, from this pedestrian fan’s perspective, they look to be more run oriented than before with Davis Alexander at QB. They definitely have QBs that can run, but it is unclear how they can throw. Not a ton of experience under center.

I’ll bet they flash hot and cold this year. Barney’s teams are kind of like the Spanish Inquisition. I see them beating Lincoln, Idaho, NoCo, and Cal Poly. SDSU could be surprisingly close, but a L. I also think Weber is a toss-up. Otherwise, I agree with your picks. 4-7, but MAYBE 5-6? It would take a lot of things going right. Barney’s done it before. Given how hard it is for the Vikes to get any support (with the school or otherwise), that might be their ceiling.

But what do I know? I’m just a pedestrian fan!

Could not resist looking up “Lincoln” as a football opponent. Lincoln (CA) is a private university located in Oakland, California. They have only about 500 students, including both the undergraduate and graduate levels. They’ve been around since 1927 (or 1919 for an immediate predecessor), but did not field a football team until last year. Mostly they got crushed, but actually did win one game … at Willamette University (1-9 overall record). Yet they want to slot into the NCAA D-II level. Although they’re classed as a “non-profit” institution, they still need to attract students, and I guess they see this as a way to publicize themselves. (Pretty expensive advertising, if you ask me.)

You seem to be throwing a lot of shade on Idaho and Weber. I think both beat PSU.

Shade at Idaho???? :o

You may be right, but PSU seems to be a tough out for the fighting spuds. I’m just not as sold on them as you.

Weber, I think they are in for a slump year. I think that game is more of a toss-up. Especially if PSU has a decent defense. Probably a low scoring slugfest.

Ask me again after we play them. One of our tunes may change by then.
