Portland State Football - Financial Woes

Personally I think PSU should go FBS if they can get in the SBC. They could then schedule UO and OSU at Jeldwin. I think both OSU and UO would play there for a "away" game. Sure crowd would be good. PSU would also be able to get teams such as UW and WSU to come there. Again a lot of those alum in the PDX area. At this stage PSU has struggled at FCS. Why not try the next step and go big time? I think all of PDX would much rather see FBS football. Just a thought.

If that fails well then maybe drop football or go back to DivII. However I think the FBS would take off there.

When you're losing games and money playing in FCS, why not lose more games and more money in FBS? I'm sure the SBC craves a member on the NW coast that is hanging on by its fingernails in FCS. Simply loaded with logic.

They would lose more games, I don't know that they would lose more money. PSU doesn't have the same risks as Montana does with the budget being funded primarily from ticket sales and donations. It is not like attendance would drop, so no loss in ticket sales. They would actually receive money from the conference for TV money, and payouts for guarantee games are larger for FBS than FCS. I believe PSU would need to add 1 sport to meet the minimum of 16. Yes you have to add more scholarships, but the school is paying these to themselves, so not a real cost to the institution. in real terms of net cost to the school you would have more coaches expenses, more uniforms and equipment (for the added sport), and more travel expense. in return you get more conference payout and bigger paydays for guarantee games. My guess is financially they come out ahead.

As far as would the Sun Belt take them, they would make a nice travel partner for Idaho and give Benson a chance to put a stick in Fullerton's eye, so I wouldn't rule it out.

There is incremental (yes, not full) cost to the university for scholarships; you are significantly underestimating their cost of competing in FBS and travel to SBC sites - and they are revenue handicapped. While I like the idea of Fullerton getting poked in the eye, this has no chance. If it wouldn't have worked for the WAC, why would it work for the SBC? And what are travel partners in football?

Folks, Portland State will not have division one football in ten years. You can't sponsor a program forever when you have 1500 folks show up to watch your games, plus it's a commuter school with no campus or loyal alumni base, just a bunch of 30 somethings looking to go to school at night to be in line for job advancement.
The same thing was said 10 years ago.
