Police: MSU football players, students bust into mayor's home

By TED SULLIVAN and CAMDEN EASTERLING Chronicle Staff Writer

Two incoming freshman Montana State University football players and two other men burst into Bozeman Mayor Jeff Krauss' home early Monday morning in an attempt to escape police.

The men, who police believed had been egging houses, were running from police at about 3:45 a.m. when they crawled through a basement window into Krauss' southside Park Place home, Bozeman Police Sgt. Steve Crawford said Tuesday.

The commotion woke Krauss up, and he went downstairs to find several people running through his house, he said.

“There were only two coherent things I heard, 'Stay down,' and ‘Running north,'” Krauss said. “It was pretty startling."

In the darkness, the mayor said, he couldn't tell who was speaking or who was running through his house. He later found out the speaker had been Bozeman Police Officer Cody Anderson, who was pursuing the men.

MSU freshman football players Clay Bignell, 19, of Avon, and Daniel Ogden, 18, of Kalispell, were charged with misdemeanors in connection with the incident, Bozeman Deputy Police Chief Mark Lachapelle said.

Three other freshman students - Robert Schmechel, 18, and Tyler Haven, 18, both of Kalispell, and Miles Wahrer, 18, of Bozeman - also face misdemeanor charges.

Allen Yarnell, MSU's vice president of student affairs, could not be reached for comment.

According to court records, Bignell appeared in Bozeman City Court Monday and pleaded guilty to criminal trespassing and obstructing a peace officer, both misdemeanors.

City Judge Karl Seel sentenced him to a $620 fine, 20 hours of community service and gave him credit for the 18 hours he had already served in Gallatin County's jail, according to court records.

Ogden, Schmechel and Haven were cited with obstructing a peace officer, according to court records, and Wahrer, who was not running from police, was cited with minor in possession of alcohol and unlawful transaction with children. None of those four has had an initial court appearance.

Between 1 a.m. and 4 a.m. Monday, police responded to numerous complaints from south Bozeman residents about egging and noise, Crawford said.

At about 3:45 a.m., police chased four men into Krauss' home. Bignell was arrested and taken to jail, but the other men got away, Crawford said.

After further investigation, the others were cited later in the day.

During the chase, the men also broke two fences and damaged an outdoor shed, Crawford said. Five separate homeowners told police they found property damage to their homes.

On Monday a young man stopped at Krauss' house two times, asking if he could come inside to look for a cell phone that “his buddy” had lost, Krauss said.

The family turned him down the first time and called 911 the second time.

The mayor applauded the police response and said he hoped the arrests sent a message to would-be criminals that “if you run through somebody's house, you're going to be prosecuted.”

Entering someone's home is not to be taken lightly, he said. Plus, chasing down people for egging homes takes up valuable police resources, Krauss added.

Unreal, I'm getting numb reading this stuff weekly from Bozeman and Missoula. We've all done things like this at some point, but these athletes better start figuring out that they will be held to a higher standard and SHOULD be. They are taking their opportunity in life for granted and without change, will pay dearly for it.

I believe Freeman was charged with misdemeanor trspassing too. Property damage to at least 5 homes. Those kids are damn lucky they didn't get shot breaking into someone's house. Let's see if Ash is going to put up with this. Quite a test for him in his first month as HC.

Who hasn't egged a house? Although breaking into a house...dumb.

Given what has transpired in Bozone and Missoula, if I was a cat or Griz FB player I would be ushering at church, visiting kids at the hosiptal, and Vets at the retirement homes. I sure as hell wouldn't be drunk, acting like I was 13 throwing eggs (the age most kids do that sort of thing Re/Max), then breaking into the Mayor's house. :twocents:

True, I think I was 16 when I was "busted" for throwing eggs. I wasn't meaning to defend it, its a stupid thing that stupid kids do.

I'll bet that right now boath Hauck and Ash wish they could lock their players up in a secure area surrounded by a 20 foot fence right about now. What a rough off-season for both UM and MSU!

There is plenty of border fence not being used, maybe they could get some on the cheap.

Although entering someone's home without an invitation is technically a felony in some states, I am happy to read that everyone was charged with misdemeanors. From what I gather, it's just a case of some young men doing something really stupid, particularly in light of recent the negative publicity regarding athletics at both UM and MSU. I hope that neither player has jeopardized his future at MSU. I agree that Coach Ash should impose some sort of penalty, as in having them run their butts off or the like, but I hope they are not removed from the team. During the recruiting process, Bignell and Ogden came across as quality young men....and now they are quality young men who need to think seriously about their behavior. Athletes on scholarship do need to strive for a higher ideal.

On the other hand, if acting stupid and engaging in childish pranks were considered serious offenses, I would probably just now be getting out of prison...and I graduated from UM in 1980.

I haven't egged a house, but I DID go on one T-Ping spree while in HS. Our youth group got several houses, including one belonging to our senior pastor. We had to physically restrain one of his grandsons so he wouldn't rat on us. I believe that one houseowner ran after our church bus throwing eggs at us.

Would you believe that after I was dropped off that night, they came back and hit our place? Man, the way they wrapped that cr@p around my dad's truck tires made it REALLY hard to clean up, particularly after it got drenched with dew.

I'll tell you what, GB. I'd love to say you made that press release up. However, it's too weird to be bogus. That's so crazy, it HAS to be true, because nobody would fall for it otherwise.

I don't necessarily disagree, but I wonder what the opinions would be if they were not MT kids, and were from say, CA.

I'm 39 and never egged a house. Or broke into a house.

Well we egged the hell out of a few houses, but we weren't taking scholarship money and we knew that if we got caught we would pay the price, not only from the law, but from our parents.

Breaking into someone's home NEVER occured to us. That is even beyond our stupidity level ( I know, you think I'm just being modest).

Can you believe that these two recruits were from the state of Montana instead of the inner city? Must be from LA.

Sure blows the all-the-bad-apples-are-black-kids-from-California theory right out of the water, doesn't it?

And, no, I never egged a building, TP'ed a car or broke into a house, even when I was 15 and stupider than I am now!! My parents would not have let me live to see another day, and I knew it!

I have to agree that if the incoming athletes were from out of state, then the reactions would probably be a little more vehement. For me personally, I'd like to think that my reaction would be the same. There is pretty much of an implied "young stupidity" throughout all 50 states, which is evidenced by higher car insurance rates until age 25, the refusal by some car rental companies to rent to persons under 25 and so on. Over on BN, the reactions are a little mixed, some similar to my own and others demanding the recruits be dismissed or suspended and I have to admit that it's fair to wonder what the reactions would be if the recruits were from Compton instead of Kalispell and Helena (well, Avon, but he played at Helena Capital.) Hopefully, they would be the same, but recent events have really opened up the out of state debate.
