Point Guard Zach Graves to attend UM on scholarship

As reported by the Missoulian this morning, point guard Zach Graves announced that he will attend the University Of Montana on a basketball scholarship.

He averaged 18 points, 4 assists, and 5 rebounds as a junior for John F. Kennedy High School out of Sacramento.

Anybody know anything else on this guy?

I did a search on this board for him and couldn't find any discussion on him, thus surprised that nobody else mentioned him, especially MslaCat.

I can not get them all!!

He is not listed on Scout.com or Rivals.com but maybe this will help:

Am I misreading the stats? The chart shows he made 168 of 179 two-point shots for 94%??? 8/15 on threes for 53% and only 57% on three throws. It doesnt make sense to me. :o

Thanks for the link MslaCat.

62Griz, just based on the stats, it looks like he shoots a lot of layups, which is generally a high percentage shot. This fact alone could be the reason he gets more rebounds on the offensive end then the defensive end.

Doesn't shoot that many 3 pointers but when he does has done well.

Looks like he will need to work on his free throw shooting.

I suspect the fg % stats are screwed up. :-? I did find another picture of him on the link mslacat provided. He looks pretty strong. It will be interesting to follow his senior season and see how he does.

He is only an hour away from me. I'll check him out a couple of times this season and let you all know.

Posting a little more found on Rivals northern Calif. Site:

Zack Graves, 6-foot-2, 170 pound, JR, SG, PHPS: Zack deserves mention for only two things but they are things many players just plain lack. First, he finishes around the basket as well or better than just about anyone we've seen this season. His hands are strong and he shows an excellent knack for finding holes and angles around the defense to get off shots many other players might get blocked or knocked away. The second nice aspect of his game is his hustle related to defensive intensity. He just seems to play hard but gets after it on defense and has the athleticism to really make life difficult for most other PGs and SGs in NorCal. Over the summer, he needs to make his handle rock solid and work on making the right pass earlier in the offense. He also needs to work on his jumper that isn't broke but needs more lift, more consistency, and better range without appearing forced.

looks like this is shaping up as our third strong recruiting class in a row: strait, hasquet and martin; van vliet, ellis, swift and sharp; chase, graves and the seven-foot aussie. (and i'm forgetting the jaycee transfer that's eligible this fall.)

one achilles heel: point guard. graves and swift might develop there but ellis is the only true point we have--and he was about our third or fourth choice. i have absolute confidence in this staff to recruit and coach big kids, but would remind you that the success of any team is based on its point guard. just think gonzaga: santangelo, dickau, the big kid from oregon whose name i've forgotten, and now raivio. they're the kids that have driven that program, and i'm not seeing their likes in these three classes.

i thought the griz should have gone after junior russell, the mvp of the division three high school ball in california, and they did. but when they told him he'd be competing with swift at point, he backed away, not wanting to compete with "family," and will play junior college ball instead.
so: can swfit play the point? can graves? these are the big questions about the future of griz basketball. the rest are being answered, nicely.

Some quotes from Graves:

"I see myself contributing well as a pass first point guard for Montana. I'd rather have 10 assists than 20 points and they [Montana] like that about my game. I used to be a player who was out to fill up the stat book in points, but I realize that the game becomes so much easier for me when I become a huge threat to pass the ball and my teammates are involved," said Graves.....

"I chose Montana because they have a strong academic program and great college atmosphere that I think I'll enjoy being at for four years. Plus, I've built a really strong relationship with all four of their coaches, with not only basketball but just life in general," said Graves.

Krysco has been looking at quite a few point and off guard this fall including:

Cameron Rundles 6-2, Minnesota
Cory Davis 5-11 Oregon (committed w/ Montana State)
Cory Neal 6-2 Washington
Michael Taylor 6-2 (Has ruled out Montana and Montana State)
Ian Andersen 6-4 Washington (committed w/ Charlotte)
Gordon Brown 6-3 Sheridan JC
Paul Noonan 6-5 Oregon (committed w/ Bosie)
Justin Parnell 6-4 Oregon
Ernest (pooh) Williams 6-4 (Utah State or Montana)

Mslacat-Thanks, as always, for the info. Are you hearing anything on this graves kid? Who else was he being recruited by?

Also, from your previous list, who do you feel we have the strongest chance of landing?? You had mentioned earlier that Gordon Brown was possible interested in coming here, but we haven't heard anything in a while. Hearing anything on Brown?? I hear the kid is about as athletic as the come, but we have had that in the past at MT and it hasn't always worked out. Also, you mentioned Pooh Williams as a possibility-any development in that arena? I know that he is choosing between USU and Montana, but is there any sort of time frame.

Also, can you give us a run down on what sort of players WIlliams and Brown are and who else they may be being recruited by? THANKS FOR ALL OF YOUR HELP

I think you have a very good chance of landing Ernest (pooh) Williams and if you do, he will be a great get. One person decribed Williams possible signing with a Big Sky team as a "steal". His stock is rising and is the highest rated player on that list ( well Ian Anderson also is up there). Williams is being recruited by Montana, Utah State, Buffalo, Dayton, New Mexico, Pacific, Portland, San Diego, Santa Clara, Washington, Wisconsin-Milw, and was offered by all on that list except Washington and New Mexico. He canceled all of his remaining visits after visiting Montana and Utah State. He could decide any time now. Here is a quote from Williams:

"We don't have a timetable right now, but Coach Collins is setting up a press conference," Williams said. "It's going to be a tough decision."

I don't know how high a priority Brown is to the Griz or where the Griz are on Brown's list, but I keep hearing that he is being recruited by the Griz. I really don't know what the plan is there

Mslacat,

Thanks for all the info. glad someone doesn't let football get in the way of hoops. Lord knows that's not me!
