Playoff Picture - with new conference...any ideas?

Excuse me for my lack of knowledge on this, but I don't remember seeing or hearing how a playoff picture could pan out with the new teams in the Big Sky Conference this year.

Since there is basically an East and a West now, and some teams not playing common opponents, how will this work? You could have two teams with the same record, who haven't played each other, and the common opponents would be limited, too. If this happened, would these two teams square up for a game to determing the Big Sky Champ and automatic playoff berth. If anyone has any ideas or info on this, that would be greatly appreciated!

They can't square up for a game if they haven't already played. Unsure on the rest of your question, though.

Found an answer to the question....went right to the source since no one seemed to know:

Below is our tiebreaker procedure for determining the automatic bid to the playoffs.

If two teams tie and didn’t play head-to-head, they should have multiple common conference opponents. For example, say Montana State and Cal Poly both go 7-1 in conference. Both teams would have played Northern Colorado, UC Davis, North Dakota, Sacramento State and Portland State in conference games. Let’s say Montana State lost to Montana, and Cal Poly lost to North Dakota. Montana State would be 5-0 against the common conference opponents. Cal Poly would have gone 4-1 against the common conference opponents. Montana State would win the automatic bid to the playoffs. As with our past format, Cal Poly and Montana State would be recognized as co-champions.

Because of the strength of our conference it’s almost a guarantee that Cal Poly would get an at-large bid to the playoffs. Because we are playing an unbalanced schedule, in theory, it should allow us to have more teams with better records. That should allow us to get three, four or five teams in the playoffs.

Hope that helps

Tiebreaker to determine automatic bid to playoffs

1. Head-to-head

2. Record against COMMON SCHEDULED CONFERENCE

OPPONENTS in descending order.

3. Record against COMMON CONFERENCE

NON-CONFERENCE opponents in descending order

4. Record against COMMON NON-CONFERENCE OPPONENTS

5. Sagarin Rating

6. Coin Flip

Examples of No. 3: If conference teams A & B both scheduled conference team C in a non-conference game (Not scheduled by the league), the results of that game can be used in a tiebreaker. If conference team A played conference team C in a scheduled conference game, but conference team B played conference team C in a non-conference game, that WOULD NOT BE used in a tiebreaker.

Examples of No. 4: If conference teams A&B both scheduled the same non-conference opponent (FBS, FCS or Division II), the results of that game could be used in a tiebreaker.
