Our corners being so far off the line of scrimmage and being 10 yard back along with both safeties being 10 yards back make it alot easier for the offense to run the ball. If a corner is up at the line and a run play is coming they can at least force it back inside and slow down the runner a little bit. I noticed the corners and safeties are all lined up 10-12 yards off the ball, in all my years of watching football I have always though that the corners were either in bump and run or 4-7 yards off the ball and then your strong safety a yard or 2 closer to the los than the Free Safety in a basic 4-3 defense. I think the Griz need to play the corners closer to help the rest of the defense out, yes I understand they could get beat deep, but they would also be in much better position to make plays against the run and the short to mid passes. Lining up not to get beat is just another playing not to lose rather than playing to win situation. Against UNC I was glad to see that we did send more than 4 guys at the quarterback on many occasions and this pressure also can help out the corners and safeties if the corners are closer. Our defensive alignment has been one of my biggest issues this season.
