Playcalling

There have been several people complaining about the Grizzly playcalling. Some say we are always running on first down. If I had time I would analyze the game and see if that is true. Does anyone have the breakdown of how much the Griz mixed up the plays.

I saw in the yearly stats that the Griz ran 66 times in two games and passed 65 times in two games, so in that aspect the offense is as balanced as can be.

I think we threw the ball 35 times. That's a number that brings to mind a balanced attack. I think we threw about that many times the last couple years.

We don't need to throw more, we need to run better. And we need to throw more passes down the field to open up the running game.

I actually don't think the problem is playcalling but execution.

The safety comes to mind. Its not a bad call to run inside when you are backed up in the shadows of your own goalposts. But the line let a guy shoot a gap and get in the backfield untouched to break up the entire play. Somebody blew his responsibility...that is not the way the play was drawn. Or it shouldn't have been drawn that way.

Take the same plays next week and execute them better and I think the Griz come away with a nice victory.

Ya its a great idea to be consistant and balanced, the last two games we ran on 1st down so consistantly the the D line had no problem holdin us to 2nd and 8 & 1/2 the second half. NDSU threw on 1st most of the second half, completed the pass too. Why ? because if we run on 1st so should everyone else so lets stop the run. Leaving them with 2nd and 2, then they did run and usuaslly blew one off for 10-12 yards. The NDSU staff looked like they were coaching against high school coaches. The had our #

They CONSISTANTLY did the oppisite of what play the the OC or DC sent in.

Everyone I sat by in the stands knew what we would do on the next play 8 of 10 times, because they saw what we tried to do againt MAine, It's no big mystery, The OC is at least as, if not more, consistant and balance than Cockhill, imagination and unpredictablities are not characteristics shown by this coaching staff to date, (other than the two trick plays) the rest is predictable vanilla . If the fans in the stands can figure it out! Don't ya think the coach on the other side can?

So I was figuring maybe you could tell me how many times the Griz ran on first and how many times we passed, overall in the NDSU game? I mean since it is such a source of contention.

Or can anyone?

I totally agree with you on that one! Looked like the execution was there in the first half. And as for that safety, it probably didn't help Waller much that Disney was standing right in his way when he handed off to him.

Maybe we should write the names of all our plays on lottery balls, spin them in a big wheel, and let a fan sitting in the first row pick one at random for each down. No defensive coordinator can prepare for that. It would be fun to watch.

LOL

Very funny idea....of course then we'll hae to have public lynchings of those jerks that draw a call for QB sneaks on 3rd and 14, or fake punts on 2nd down, or other such calls.

I don't know the breakdown for pass/run 1st down, 2nd down or what have you but I just wanted to throw this into this topic.

It seems to me that so far this year, we are starting a lot more drives than normal inside of our 20 yard line. Against Maine it seemed that we started almost the entire 1st half (except after a kickoff return), inside of our 20. Last weekend was also much of the same.

Our best field position seems to come after we return a kickoff. I don't remember this happening as often the past couple of years. This is important because field position does effect play calling!

Additionally, I still feel that we are intentionally being conservative this early in the season. You can see by our execution that we need to get better at executing the plays we run, then add to that. I'm betting (hoping) that we are using the non-conference schedule to tune up our basic play book, then add the gas to the fire for the BSC games. We can't win the National Championship at the beginning of the season, only at the end!

Last thought for now is that even though we've had a spring and fall practice session, our coaches really don't know our players that well. You can practice and do walk throughs all you want but you really can't judge players and their abilities accurately unless they are playing a real game, handling real time situations. Our coaches are still in the feeling out process with the players. They will find out who can and will perform and they will make adjustments from there.

EXECUTION!

Everybody at the LSU game last week KNEW that LSU would run the ball on first down 80% of the time also. Oh....LSU won 59-14. Why? Everybody knew it was coming, including the DC of Arizona.....why did it work? EXECUTION!

The Griz should be able to line up on first down against a D2 school, tell them..."this is a run play" and roll off 4-6 yards.

The one thing that really pissed me off about the play calling was the Lex Hiiliard drive. The kid was ripping them up. 5 yards a pop. Then the coaches call a screen??????? It got intercepted..... But why a screen?

For those that like to talk X's And O's....the middle WR screen is a play that is designed to catch a team that is blitzing the hell outta ya....but we had just had three straight runs thatwere killing them. They were back on their heels. They were all playing the running lanes and stackin the box. It does not take a Guru to figure out what the next call should be...... PLAY ACTION, huck it deep! Or Playaction bootleg, to a wide open TE good for 10-15 yards.

Then we never saw Hilliard again.

At least Bobby says Hilliard is going to see more time in this weeks game. Here's one prediction that he'll go for 100+ for the first time of his Griz career.

i think what some people were wondering about regardling play calling was the fact that plays that weren't working were called repeatedly and that the runs plays were of little or no variety.

If i get time i'l break it down.

But heck maybe we'll all wake up and it will have all been a dream.

Did you know we actually threw more on first down than we ran?

In the second half we ran the ball the first 5 first downs according to Green26 on the other board.

And running the ball with a large lead against a weaker opponent is in therory a strong coaching philosophy.

It worked real well for Steve Spurrier at Florida, and Joe Glenn at Montana.........

A coaching Philosophy that usually lost the lead by Joe Glenn and Co. , You may consider it a strong Philosophy , But,I look at it as trying to fix something that isn't broke.

Or pyeein all over oneself!! OOups

Wasn't there a college team that let the fans choose the play (or maybe it was a semi-pro baseball team) by using flashcards from the stands? Perhaps we could convince Bobby to let us give our input that way. Of course, the opposing team would have to agree not to look into the stands.
