Phillips

I am sure there have been alot of QB threads but I didnt see one on the first page so I thought I would start a new one.

I have been advocating for Jensen to be the starter ASAP if the competition was close. I figure the more experience the better, down the road. I have seen very little of Jensen and my opinion has been based on The fact Stitt recruited him for his offense and the initial hype that he will be "the guy". I still have faith that this will be the case but I must say I think Phillips looks really good and is poised. I didnt see him come down on anybody yesterday and despite the strife of getting destroyed he never looked flustered. He threw good catchable balls with great consistency. Happy to have him lead this year. He looked like a leader. Too bad he didnt come one year earlier. I hope he keeps this up all year.

I agree. I think he stayed pretty poised thru the game. He's a good leader for the offense this year, and as he gets more comfortable with the offense, the team will improve. Obviously, we won't face a better defense this year-except for the Kittens-in their crazy heads! I'm optimistic about the season for this team! Go Griz!!!!!!

Jensen was my hope preseason. Sunshine has stepped up and earned the starting position. Would have liked to see Jensen a little bit longer at UW and see Hill for a series or two. Maybe coaches didn't want to see unnecessary heroics by the younger guys and get them hurt. Phillips survived well with all the pressure on him and delievered some good throws.
Phillips looks to be a good fit, he and JLM seem to be close may be a special year for the pair.

I agree would have liked to see more Jensen and see Hill get a few throws too

The QB position is one in which we have improved over last year. I hope Phillips stays healthy.

Agreed. OLine is better as well. D-Line, jury is still out. Starters in defensive backfield are good...no depth. LB's are good, RB's are better (especially backups) than I expected. WR's are doing exactly as I'd hoped (except Curran).

The WR's really look the part. Akem and Toure are some pretty big dudes. They are going to present some mismatches soon.

Phillips is the man, Jensen is the second coming, and Hill is caught up somewhere in the middle.

Definitely serviceable. Lee needs to work on his blocking skills though. Whiffed a few the last two games.

Agree Lee missed a couple of blocks but I thought he looked really good otherwise and should definitely share time with Calhoun who also looked good.

In the face of the best pass rush we are likely to see all season, Phillips stayed cool as a cucumber. There were some moments, but by and large he went out and preformed well. If the dropsies by the WRs can get moderately resolved, he can have a special year! Keep the TD pass to JLM as a highlight despite the penalty. Beautiful route and beautiful throw.

I was kind of hoping Jensen would see the field against UW. Especially in the 2nd half. Why not get him some game reps (against UW 2s & 3s.). Who knows maybe he could of had an offense spark and put offense points nets on the board.

Another couple of weekends against EWU and maybe we really see who this UM team is!

As I mentioned in another thread, Stitt's offensive set doesn't force defenses into those mismatches, though. Take Valparaiso, for example. They ran multiple sets and when they scored or passed for big plays, they had a quicker receiver defended by a backer. EWU's Baldwin was notorious for this (EWU vs. the Griz many times, EWU vs. WSU last year, EWU vs. NDSU last year). Stitt runs the same set, and defensive coordinators in the past have easily matched up well which has forced our QBs to hit the shorter routes. Stitt's offense relies on super great receivers who can adjust and a seasoned QB to improvise. We have had neither during his tenure. Plus, defensive coordinators have now adjusted to this offensive scheme since a majority of offensive coordinators run it. Stitt needs to adjust his scheme like it's a game of chess.</r>

Maybe, but BALDWIN had receivers like Kupp. Don't underestimate the younger, bigger, faster crew he has recruited. Go one on one with them or even zone and good luck. Stitt is not the second coming of Jesus by any means, but his recruits may be.

Not likely, definitely. But good post and agreed.
