i'm just not down on tinkle or this program, for these reasons:

1. tinkle's first two years were .500, and that looked like mediocrity to me. but this year's team was not a .500 team. in fact, they came down the stretch with an outside chance to win 20 games, despite the loss of their starting point guard for several games, and the injury to selvig at the end.

2. this team played defense, leading the big sky in defensive field goal percentage. that was the stat i was loooking for, and i got it.

3. the bill evan hire was a good one. it meant tinkle was willing to go outside his circle of buddies for expertise--a key to the maturation of any administrator or coach.

4. the talent on board is cause for great optimism. if thurman woods and will cherry play next year, it means our freshman class of woods, cherry, moikubu and ward should be outstanding, a striking upgrade in athleticism, and one of the best freshman classes ever at montana. i think cherry and ward, two kids we signed early, would now be welcome at many pac-10 programs. and if will cherry, an inner-city kid from oakland, can find happiness in missoula, the will cherry era could be something real special for us.

it was a dark night for us last night, but it's always darkest just before dawn. you heard it here.

Only reason I am down at all is the Griz can't seem to get fired up for big games. The games you would think they would live for they often flop for. Aside from that, the season leaves room to be hopeful for next year.

There is a learning curve to coaching. 2 years ago I posted that both Hauck and Tinkle were young and would improve with time. I believe I saw some of that improvement from both this year. However, our basketball team under achieved again this year. Tinks recruits very well so our talent isn't the problem. Therefore, if it isn't the players, it must be the coaching. We seem to get out coached too often and are not getting the best from the players. Obviously there is weakness in the coaching that needs to be identified and fixed. If the current coaching staff can't fix it bring in someone who can. I don't believe an overhaul to the coaching is needed, but we need some change.

I agree. This team came miles from where they were early in the season, and the only way you accomplish that is with quality coaching. But I am disappointed in their inability to play well in their biggest, most-important games.

City.... I'm on board with you when it comes to the incoming talent we have.... it will be VERY exciting to see what our RS Frosh and true Freshman can do next season.... but next year will Tinkle still be running his offense that consists of 4 guys running around the perimeter while AJ pounds the ball and puts up a shot with two guys on him??? Lets hope with the additional young talent comes some additional offensive creativity..... your right as well about our sound defense and I believe all of that credit goes to Coach Evans.....he is who brought in the defensive game plan...... I hope Tinks hits some coaching clinics and discovers some new offensive sets..... cuz lord knows Andy Hill doesn't know shit..... IMHO "The Will Cherry Era" cannot get here soon enough....go griz
