Well, they've got a new head coach, and someone else is going to steal a GREAT head coach that the Pack passed up.
Mike McCarthy was hired today, the OC of the 49ers last year and the Saints OC 4 years before that. He was hired b/c he was the quarterbacks coach in Green Bay in 1999, the year Ray Rhodes as head coach won something like 4 or 5 games.
Right now, without seeing any results, I'd say this was a bad hire. There were two or three more qualified coaches available, one being Mike Sherman, and the other being Jim Bates, the current DC.
Bates today is very unhappy, with quotes like, "it's done, I'm out. I'm going to pursue other jobs now. I was just as or more qualified than the other guys." It appears that right now the Packers will lose Bates as DC, and he'll land a head coaching job somewhere, the Pack missed out big, IMO.
Hiring McCarthy is an attempt to hang onto the belief that the whole team must cling to every last little bit of Brett Favre. He's in the top three QBs of all time, but his career is winding down, and there will be football after Favre, wether the GM sees that or not. I fear hiring McCarthy is a "quick fix" to try to bring Brett back for one more year, rather than a hiring that will embrace the long term vision of the Packers management.
And what is that vision? It's to win the superbowl. Are the Packers going to do that next year? No. Three to four years from now, with the right planning and development of Aaron Rodgers the Packers will be there, with an experienced D, amazing WRs and a dominant running attack (with the RB they will draft this year or next year). Hiring a guy to keep Favre happy next year isn't going to take this team to the superbowl, what will happen when Brett retires, it will be like hitting the reset button.
It's a rant, I think the Packers have lost the next best head coach in Bates, hopefully McCarthy will prove me wrong.
