Pac-12 Mountain West and the Premier League

News Flash. The University of Montana is efing broke. They are so far from having the kind of money necessary to boost scholarships and female sports for an FBS move. The PAC 3, or whatever it's about to be is going to want teams that participate in all of its sports, not just football. That's 28 sports, including 6 sports for men that UM doesn't have, plus scholarship lacrosse.

Why don't we start a thread about the Griz formula 1 auto racing?

What should be advocated is the Big Sky joining the thing completely, including the termination of FCS (or at least the termination of the status for the BSC…not like the NCAA is brimming with authority at this point).

That could be joining as a third division, though I could argue that a better idea is multiple regionalized 2nd division leagues below the “premier” league. Then we no longer have to have the TV market discussion. That format would also guarantee a promotion playoff… way better than a bowl game.

It’s also obvious from just reading other CFB message boards that people HAVE been watching Welcome to Wrexham. There is at least the possibility that a network or streaming service will want to buy in on something with a bit of heightened drama around potentially relegated teams and potential promotions at the lower level.

Now… I did say “possibility.” Dennis Dodd tweeted today that Oregon State and Washington State want to be exempted from relegation. I don’t think the Mountain West buys into that. This proposal isn’t quite an odds-on bet.

But I should note this: I’m now hearing people saying that this kind of thing is inevitable at the very top… that the big P2 schools will want more of the revenue, and this is the way to do it without having a complete realignment.

But I noticed on YouTube a 365 Sports interview with Matt Brown, who knows a little bit about realignment issues. He mentioned that this isn’t the first brush with the subject. The West Coast Conference and the Big West Conference have apparently discussed a similar proposal for other sports… the goal being an improvement in RPI (or whatever they’re calling it these days) for the upper level schools. That, with other conferences added, might even make more sense than for football. And if the opportunity is there, you should really want to be part of that. Again, this won’t be easy to accomplish.

When this all shakes out, and I believe it will take a few years, our Griz will still be roughly where we are now. There will be about 40 schools playing for the National College Title/ might still be NCAA but I'm guessing most likely not. All the other current FBS schools will be left with three choices; independents, a loose confederation of conferences with some regionalism and maybe the old names, drop back to the FCS. The goal of all teams outside of the BIG 40 will be to find a rich booster, Saudi oil money, or laser printer in the Main Hall basement to generate enough money to "pull an SMU" and buy a seat at the big kids table. The rest of us will be playing FCS (or some other name).

On another note PTI shouted out the BSC yesterday; "Washington State and Oregon State may end up trapped in the Mountain West Conference, if not they might as well go and join the Big Sky Conference." or something very close to that.

News flash. Lots of educational institutions are “broke”. Everyone acts like nothing is going to change with other schools. Kids don’t have the $$’s to attend or they are forgoing a four year education. (Actually likely 5 year now.). Athletics and recruiting are becoming dependent on NIL money. Universities need major donors to continue with their construction projects. Meanwhile, kids cannot afford the education. If you or anyone else thinks this is a U of M problem - you are mistaken. More likely other schools will drop down in the future because the TV deals are no longer lucrative enough to fund all athletic programs. Some of the schools that left the BSC May end up returning to FCS. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but higher education is not healthy. One party doesn’t want an educated populace. It makes it easier to have sheep that will not think critically.

Many businesses and organizations can be broke in a given year. That doesn’t mean they will always be broke depending on if they have enough courage to make decisions that could generate additional revenue in years to come. Currently UM doesn’t have leadership in the athletic department that has the courage to make such a decision as potential opportunities are viewed thru sleepy eyes.

Spanky, what exactly are these big money avenues for generating cash that you seem to believe are available to UM athletics?

Helena, that’s a good exercise for you to ponder.
