Our Van.....Down By The River

WaGriz, In a perfect world, you're absolutely right. But we never got that luxury. That's the point. MickyD wasn't hired BECAUSE of the system he ran. Don't make me laugh. He came out of retirement and by the time he has his recruits to fit his system, he'll likely be on his way back to retirement and the cycle will likely continue.

I hated 2010 when Pflu was half in his system and half out. He probably would have been better off if he just ripped the bandaid off. But then again, that's what Mick seems to be doing. There's gotta be a happy medium; like anything else, moderation is key. Here's a perfect example: we have a qb that could easily lead the league in rushing (from that position) but they do not even give him the chance. The end result is, instead of letting JJ destroy teams, they hang around. It's a damn shame such a great qb is relegated to typical booby-ball.

Mick's situation was obviously different than typical coaching hires. You are right we didn't hire Mick because of his system. However we DID hire Pflu for that reason. Pflu ran his system in 2010, he wasn't half in and half out. The only element of the offense that wasn't used in 2010 was the zone-read. Obviously a huge part of that scheme, but you can understand why when looking at the underwhelming athletes we had at QB (Selle and Roper). So he did tweak his system to fit his personnel, but didn't totally change his system to fit the players.

I agree that there needs to be more designed runs/read/option by JJ. I agreed he is being underutilized, but he still had a monster year and is a Walter Payton candidate, which just goes to show that JJ is....well... a badass dude.

I think we're on the same page. I could argue with you about pflu in 2010 but why bother. The point is we have a once in a lifetime qb and the staff would rather run the same dumb stretch play over and over. He had a monster year DESPITE the staff/system

... and Jonathan Richards (6'3" 242) of whom I have little to no confidence in, supposedly lead blocking. But where is Joey Counts in all this...
Why. How much FB have u seen him play in a Grizzly uniform? FB isn't a real technical position. Normaly you run to the whole and hit the 1st guy u see. I think he could probably do that. As far as Counts, it's been stated a couple times that he's gonna b ready for fall. Aperently you didn't see Ngyuen run last year either. He's shifty but he's a very strong runner also. It also may be he has #38 on his back and I'm just used to seeing 38 run people over(Lex for those that don't remember).

Joey is still recovering from a late season injury, but expected to be ready go by the start of fall camp in early August.

while I agree that the f/b is driven by attitude , to say that it is not technical is being short sighted,,drive blocking (slam block we used to call it), (pin) block where the full back is asked to turn the l/b to ones side or another when there is a delayed run ie. cross in the back field..a screen block and then get to the next level, roll out blocking for sweeps, cut blocks and pass blocking.....all take different foot work and timing....it is very technical in most peoples mind...

And it isn't a position that's used in most offenses.

Why. How much FB have u seen him play in a Grizzly uniform? FB isn't a real technical position. Normaly you run to the hole and hit the 1st guy u see. I think he could probably do that.

Well. for one thing, statistically speaking, for two years now J. Richards has appeared in but two games and has assisted on one tackle with no carries and no pass receptions for a grand total of one assisted tackle in two years of eligibility. Playing in two games in two years (2013 & 2012), besides. None as a redshirt freshmen (2012). That's kind of strange for a player that's at the FCS level, to be around as a one time LB now FB, to not see any action, for the most part, whatsoever. :? One would think that, taking into consideration such things as normal player attrition, graduation, etc., that a player that's been around for two years would at least be in on Special Teams sometime. So I don't know. Why would you think he could probably do so, as you say, and, as you said previously as well, playing Fullback isn't all that technical of a position to handle.

But, of course, if the FB is not in position to make a block, misses a block, etc., then the whole play can break down, now couldn't it?

So, technically, from what I can ascertain, how is it that someone can have confidence in a player to do something that's only played in two games in two years and has changed positions from a position in dire need of players, linebacker, at least for starters, to another position that he's never played before at the collegian level? Even though it's not all that technical, supposedly.

What am I missing here.

So the rumors that Van had eligibility issues were bogus?
he was hinting about canada having issues not van. that might explain why he thinks Van will have big numbers this year. i highly doubt that canada or anyone else (van, henderson) will be ruled ineligible due to grades. i don't recall ever having a football player ruled ineligible for grades.

The SNL "living in van down by the river" reference could mean a lot of things. The kids in the skit were
caught with weed so the parents were nervous about the choices that they were making. The parents hired
the motivational speaker to tell the kids they "weren't going to amount to jack squat" if they didn't change their ways. Maybe Alpha knows something? RIP Tommy Boy!

Too funny. Just couldn't resist posting the video.

Best part of this sketch is Spade and Applegate cracking up because it wasn't anywhere close to this over the top in rehearsal.

Yes Spade and Applegate are hilarious. But you need to recognize the potential connection the skit has to Griz football and why Alpha referenced it? Maybe Matt Foley(Farley) represents
MD after he finds out the some if his "playas" enjoy the "chronic " from time to time? Maybe the parents represent RE and KH? You gotta look for the hidden "punch line" with Alpha. Like I said, a genius post by Alpha.

Ok, so whats the deal here? One min I hear that Counts is out for the season and having surgery in AZ. Then I hear hes gonna be ready for fall camp. I'm sticking to the idea that hes done for the season cuz the injury thread was posted way back in Oct or Nov that his dad said it was bad and he was gonna need surgery...
