Griz til I die

7pm tonight. No ESPN+ stream tonight because of the Big Sky Soccer tournament at South Campus today. So the only option is radio. Nice of Ottawa to stop by and take a game against the Griz on their way to Butte for Tech’s tournament. I’d like to see our shooting percentages a little better tonight with Stanford looming.

Also, Stanford beat Portland State 89-79 last night. I didn’t really want the Viks to beat them as that would’ve put Stanford on high alert with the Griz coming to town, but PSU kept it within single digits most of the night, so that gives me some hope that we have a chance on Saturday.

Griz are pretty short. I am concerned a lot of success will hinge on how well the team shoots because with the tallest guy being 6’9 there won’t be many offensive rebounds.

A little frustrated with the offense.
It's not very crisp.
Gut feeling, they'll turn on the switch.
I really like the Betts kid.
Unfortunately, he doesn't play much.

32 19 GRIZ at the half.
Scrappy ugly game.
Ottawa is a good NAIA team.
Defense is solid.
They have the GRIZ all out of sync.

The Griz have an interesting game coming up Saturday at Stanford. A lot of our best players like Will Cherry and Mario Dunn are from the Bay Area. It looks like a few guys currently on the team are from there as well. Hopefully the football team doesn’t have a slow first half against Eastern or I will have to figure out a way to watch both.

Refs are calling weak fouls, they try to play physical against Aguino and end up falling down and get the call

Griz win 73-39. Money led the team with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Isaak was second with 12 points. 3 point shooting was better in the second half. Pretty poor free throw shooting at 22-35. That has to be better on Saturday or we don’t stand a chance. Also had 17 turnovers, most of which came in the first half, but that also needs to be better. Team played better in the second half. Held Ottawa to less points than NWIC.

Onto Stanford Saturday at 2pm. I plan on putting it on my phone while at the Football game. Gotta shoot the ball well (we made 10 3s against Denver) and gotta play clean, but I think we have a chance! Let’s go chop some trees boys!

Really not much to add on this game.
We have solid rebounding from guards.

I think, Trae Taylor can be a difference maker on the boards. Unfortunately, he, Betts, and Jedkins aren't getting many minutes yet.

Hicks misses are from side rotation on his shot. His misses go left too. He's got to fix that rotation or he'll be inconsistent all year.

I do like the perimeter defense. There's not a week perimeter defender. Teams have to move the ball quickly to beat the perimeter defense.

Hopefully the GRIZ don't come out flat against Stanford.

You are correct in your analysis. Spot on. We relied too much on the outside shot last night or we could have got to 100 again with our defense. We also turned the ball over way too much against a much less talented team. We could beat Stanford or we could get smoked. We need to feed Kenyon and Te'Jon more to be more consistent. As an aside, our only true big man left us after last season: Zack Davidson. He had 29 and 9 for NAU against Drake. I always miss that we are not a big man program anymore. And I was a guard...

The playing rotation is going to be highly competitive. I think that helps defensively because guys will have to D up to get minutes. But I do think Griz will need significant contributions from Betts and Trae Taylor to beat teams with good size. I’m a big fan of Travis but the utilization of post players offensively and post defense haven’t been Griz strengths the last few seasons.
