Official Draft Thread

How stupid is Miami? I don't know who their coach is but he/management that made draft day decisions should be fired.

It's Cam Cameron.

Jamal Lewis is running the ball in Cleveland now, I think.

I like the Broncos of Jarvis Moss, DE from Florida. That should shore up the D-line with the addition of Dumervil last year. Though, I don't know about giving up the 2nd rounder for Moss.. they probably could have drafted him at the 22nd spot.

I was surprised to see Quinn fall so far. A lot of Dolphin fans are pissed about not drafting Quinn, rather Ginn Jr. I just can't justify Ginn being a first rounder.

I am not surprised to see Quinn fall that far.He has been in a Pro style offense under former NFL Coach in Weiss so the teams looking at him may not see much more upside potential with him. It isn't like ND was ever a serious NC contender with Quinn leading them. :twocents:

Which is why he will fit into the very generic NFL and be solid. No talent can take you a long way in the NFL ($$$$$)with the right hype machine.

He can't be any worse than Leaf, Marinovich, Frye, Ware, Klingler, Stauffer (sp), Mirer, Russell etc.

It would be pretty hard to be any worse than those guys.

Its all about the "U"!

Go 'Canes!

I think so, I see this year being a 10-6 year, winning the NFC North (Pack beat the Bears twice last year).

I bet Favre was hoping they drafted a WR. He could use a little help.

They did - all 4 of their picks took care of a need.

DT in the 1st round - Solidifies the defense
RB in the 2nd round - A great RB to replace Ahman Green
WR in the 3rd - probably more of return man than a WR, but good athletic ability, scouts say he could be another Donald Driver
Saftey in the 3rd - Takes care ofthe depth needed at Saftey

The Pack only beat the Bears once last year (got shut out by the Bears at home), but swept the rest of the division. I wish I could be as optimistic as you about the Packers picks. I think they reached on every pick other than the safety Rouse. I realize it's easy to be an arm-chair GM, but I really wasn't that impressed with Thompson's picks today. Maybe they could get Michael Bush from Louisville and a good tight end (the Whitworth guy?) in day 2, that might save their draft.

Forget about them getting Bush, Oakland scooped him up and dumped Moss on New England. How smart is Belichik now? Why bring cancer to his team?

Do you really think Belichick will stand for that? First time Moss acts up he'll cut him. That simple. He won't put up with some idiot screwing up the locker room chemistry.

haha.. the Heisman trophy winner went at the end of the 5th round. That's pathetic. May the run of awful Heisman winners continue!

That is the point. Do you honestly think Moss will behave? Do not underestimate Moss ability to screw up ?

The packers never draft someone who really makes you excited to the next season. AJ hawk was as close as they got. I really wish they would've either went after Quinn or picked up Troy smith in the later rounds.

Troy Smith will be the NFLs next Heisman bust.

I really don't think much is expected of him so it's kind of tough to consider him a bust. The heisman isn't awarded to who's going to be the best pro so it's reasonable to expect that someone who's the best college player may not fight nearly as well into the pro game. eg) Jason White.

I'm not saying smith will be good in the pros i just think the potential upside his higher than the risk when you get into rounds 4 and 5. The biggest knock on him is his hight and this could potentially be negated by his ability to get outside the pocket.

I thought there were many other QBs in the draft better than Smith.. and actually, better QBs that went undrafted better than Smith. I never thought he was great in college, and Florida exposed that. I'm not even entirely convinced he was the best player last year..

The heisman isn't awarded to who's going to be the best pro

a la Gino Torretta: 1992 Heisman and Maxwell Award winner, 1993 draft pick by Minnesota, 7th round, 192 player picked. Did throw a TD pass while playing for the Seattle Seahawks in the season finale against the Oakland Raiders. That's almost as good as saying he stayed at the Holiday Inn last nite!

Harris, Swogger headed to NFL
By FRITZ NEIGHBOR of the Missoulian

They didn't hear their name called on ESPN, but former Montana Grizzly standouts Tuff Harris and Josh Swogger will get an opportunity to make an NFL team.

Harris, a standout return man and cornerback, signed a two-year free agent deal with the Miami Dolphins. Swogger wasn't among the 11 QBs selected in the NFL Draft this weekend, but he is still going to minicamp with the Kansas City Chiefs on May 11.

“I just got off the phone probably 15 minutes ago,” Swogger, who threw for 2,685 yards and 17 touchdowns for UM last fall, said at 6 p.m. Sunday. “I talked to the Jaguars and Vikings, too.

“Everybody wants to get drafted, but I think this is a good situation.”

Kansas City has questions at quarterback, with Trent Green demanding to be traded and rumors of a deal with Miami still swirling. Swogger, who transferred from Washington State last spring and helped UM to a 12-2 mark in 2006, had a total of 10 teams contact him in the weeks leading up to the draft.

“Four teams picked a quarterback,” Swogger said from a restaurant in Youngstown, Ohio, where he watched the draft. “We were just waiting for one of those other teams to contact me. And Kansas City was one of those teams.”

Miami, meanwhile, wasn't one of those teams in heavy contact with Harris, a Colstrip product who excelled as a punt return man with the Griz.

“It's kind of out of the blue,” said Harris. “They weren't on me as much as other teams. But regardless, it's the shot I was waiting for.”

The Dolphins didn't take any defensive backs among their 10 draft picks. Harris said Miami called him late in the seventh round, before Green Bay took its final draft pick (the Packers took Rutgers tight end Clark Harris). Afterward he spoke with Miami secondary coach Mel Phillips.

“They'd seen film, and they came and visited last spring,” Harris said. “They have good corners, but they're all young - nobody over two years, I guess. He (Phillips) said it's a good opportunity, a good chance to compete.”

The kicking game could be a factor for Harris. Miami's first-round pick, receiver and return man extraordinaire Ted Ginn, Jr., out of Ohio State, is nursing a sprained foot.

“He has an injury and probably won't be doing anything until two months from now,” said Harris, who averaged 14.5 yards per punt return with two touchdowns last fall. “They also mentioned (returning) which is good. I kind of like doing that.”

Swogger, represented by former Griz player Chris Murray and Imani Sports, said he has yet to sign a contract. Local agent Ken Staninger, who represents Harris, said his client got a two-year, non-guaranteed deal with an unspecified signing bonus.

NOTES: Only one Big Sky Conference player was drafted - Portland State linebacker Adam Hayward went in the sixth round to Tampa Bay. Š Among the quarterbacks taken was Washington's Isaiah Stanback, in the fourth round by Dallas. Š Dallas also took Cal Poly cornerback Courtney Brown in the seventh round. Š One Division I FCS quarterback went in the draft: Tyler Thigpen of Coastal Carolina went in the seventh round to Minnesota.
