# of Plays - Griz vs Opponents

An alarming trend we need to pay attention to:

The# of plays the Griz offense is running compared to our opponents

Washington 73 vs UM 57 (-16)
WIU 56 vs UM 71 (+15)
Cal Poly 91 vs UM 67 (-24)
EWU 87 vs UM 69 (-18)

All together we have run 43 less plays than our opponents through 4 games. The last two games we’ve run 42 less plays. That is an alarming stat.

Some of these are because of special-teams touchdowns essentially giving the other team another possession, but it is also obvious the Griz offense is often times going three and out and not putting together drives.

This has to be corrected soon or we will definitely be in trouble.

At one point midway through the game our # of plays and EWU's # of plays were essentially even (like 46-44 or something like that). 2nd half (after the opening drive) KILLED our play count....

Yep. I mentioned it in the game thread, but at one point EWU was 3/12 on 3rd downs....and those were 3/13, 3/20 and 3/28. If you are going to allow THOSE to be picked up, its typically going to be a long night for the D.

Yep. I mentioned it in the game thread, but at one point EWU was 3/12 on 3rd downs....and those were 3/13, 3/20 and 3/28. If you are going to allow THOSE to be picked up, its typically going to be a long night for the D.

To be fair, the 3/13 was the only one they turned into points, and the 3/28 they didn't technically pick up, but got it on 4th and 1. I know, I know, splitting hairs. :lol:

On that note, IMO allowing them to go 4 of 5 on 4th down, three of which on drives that led to 9 points, was a much bigger factor, especially considering only two of those were 4/1.

Yes I agree with that as well. If I have to watch one more 3rd and 20 or 3rd and 16 or 3rd and 12 get converted I might go throw the pads on myself! . No one wants to see that.

The last two games were against Beau Baldwin 2.0 and Beau Baldwin beta, so it doesn’t surprise me that we had a significant play count discrepancy. It would be interesting to see the stats regarding how many extra plays came as the result of Griz turnovers.

Poly took advantage of the space left by the blitzing linebackers over and over and over with receiver screens and slants.
