ODU-JMU basketball game

Anyone else watching this game on ESPNU? At the moment, with about 15:00 to go in the second half, ODU is up by nine. Anyway, I'm struck by three things about this game, which is being played at JMU: 1) how small the gym is, 2) how few people are there and 3) the students appear to be in a TEENY section on one end. Comments from anyone else?

1. The arena seats ~7500. It doesn't look it on TV because the seats go deep into the sides of the arena and it's a little darker the higher you move up.

2. JMU does not draw well in men's basketball. They often they draw better from women's basketball.

3. Their student section is on both sides of the arena along the short side. It's actually two fairly large sections, but most of the students sit high up (like a balcony seating area...see pic above) and it doesn't show well on television. The sections on the floor right behind the basket are indeed small though.

Otherwise, the JMU Convocation Center is a dingy place. It's dark, the seats are sub-par, the atmosphere is lacking, and the staff are notoriously known to be unfriendly.

True, the photo shows the arena better than I was ever able to observe during the TV coverage of the game, and it does have considerably more seating than I thought it did. ODU, for your information, there is endless discussion on this board about UM basketball attendance (considerably lower than in the 60s, 70s, 80s) and about where students sit (on the ends). I just was making notes about a peer team's arena.

You are correct, student support for JMU mens basketball leaves a lot to be desired. The program has fell on hard times since Lefty Driesell left in 1997. Our hey day was in the the early 1980`s when we got to the second round of ncaa three years in a row under coach Lou Campinelli. We lost to eventual national champion North Carolina , which featued JORDAN, PERKINS and WORTHY by two points on a charge / blocking call at the end of the game. That was a 48 team field !!!
Now we seem to be on an upward track with 20 plus win seasons in two of the last three years.
IT was annouced today , that JMU will build an 87.5 million dollar basketball arena in the six year plan. The renovations to the football stadium (25000 plus) will be finished in August. And we just built a 62 million dollar music facility called the Forbes Center. I can tell you it is second to none.
GO DUKES !!!!!!!!!
