OBSERVATIONS FROM THE STANDS

First a disclaimer, I played HS basketball 55 years ago so following observations are not ground in anything more than sitting in the stands.
OK where to start, to begin I have nothing but respect and admiration for Travis and the entire coaching staff. I’ve been fortunate to spend considerable time with each of them. And I have little criticism for the product they put on the floor. However in order to win a game or two in the big dance they need to fill one important void, a true and versatile big man. I know this has been discussed to the ends of the earth and back but if they hope to be taken seriously in the NCAA tournament this is a short fall that will need to be addressed. Again, just an observation but if we look at the future with what we have in the wings I don’t see this being a road map to success in the tournament. To begin I thought Kramer was going to be that person but his development to date does not lend it self to his being the next Brian Quale. I hope I’m wrong. Mac Anderson has great potential but his frame tells me he is more a 4 than a 5. I think he will be very good in a couple of years but that does not address our need for an inside banger who can produce 8-12 Pt’s. and 6-8 rebounds a game. I’m still trying to get a read on Ben Carter but I don’t think he is the answer either.
When you look at the coaching staff you see all of them, Chris, Jay and Rollie having played the 1 or 2 spots in collage and that’s obviously where our strength lies. I feel Travis needs to bring a big man into his staff. Someone who truly understands and has connections with recruiting big men and can shape them.
Another observation, and I’ll close with this. When you see Kirby in a defense stance arms outstretched and feet equally spread he limits is mobility. He looks more like a tennis player spread eagled and therefore it limits his lateral movement. It might work for tennis but not for basketball.
Anyway that’s my two cents worth and I encourage rebuttal.

I feel I am in much better position than you to analyze the situation, because I played high school basketball only 51 years ago and my seats are in row 1. Nevertheless, I have nothing to add. I don't know the answers. Your observations are as good as most that I see.

Well I played HS ball only 38 years ago. And I watch all the games on Pluto. My mind is fresh as a daisy.

Every team in the United States is looking for quality bigs. They'd all agree with you, Sport. :)

Absent a quality big on your roster, you have to have multiple guys who can consistently make threes.

Good big men are always tough to recruit, especially in the Big Sky. It often falls to playing a 4 at the 5 position. I think Travis has been fantastic at recruiting players to play 1-3 positions, but not so good at either 4 or 5. As a result we get Morehead, Dorsey etc., great 3s, having at times to play the 5 and that is not their strengths. It's been noted elsewhere but it seems after Travis does get a big man that needs some time to develop, he then loses a lot of them to transfe. He's not mentioned very often anymore but I think losing Samulson falls in this category as well, and the Griz are feeling his loss this year.

As much as I hate to say it I don’t think we’re going to find a truly good big man in Montana. Larry K being the exception. There just isn’t the competition in this state to provide good quality big men who can play inside as well as in the 15’ to 17’ consistently. Even Selvig with his height was more of a 4 and his frame did not lend itself to bang inside. I go back to my previous entry in that I think Travis needs a hire an assistant who has the experience and knows the woods and how to recruit and develop big, raw talent.
Akoah is undersized from a height standpoint and his range is very limited but he has served us well. But next year??? We’ll have to go the JC route unless Kramer and Carter make significant improvement in their game.
I have not been able to catch any Hellgate games this year but there has been very little discussion about Rolle Worster who committed to the Griz as a sophomore. He’s currently is scoring at a 20 pt clip and at 6’3” is decent size for a shooting guard. I would like to hear some observations from those on the site who have a better reading on his potential.

That, and/or, make free throws.

Most mid majors will never have a big man that is able to play with P5 teams. The mid majors that are successful are the ones that spread the ball from the arc well and have atleast 1 player that can isolate and score...really need 2. At times i think we have 2 guards that can isolate in Rorie and Oguine but our outside shoot needs to increase at a good rate in order to really have a shot to beat anyone in the tourney. Akoh can keep the paint in check and can score SOME vs P5 Posts but overall the game has to be won on defense, isolation and from the arc....we have 2 of the 3.
