"Observational" 2-deep headed into the final week

This is the last week of fall camp, most positions are starting to take shape and I thought I'd put together an "observational" 2-deep, from what I've seen in the stands.

QB: McKinney / Brzczeck
RB: Canada OR Nguyen / Walden OR Elder
FB: Moore / Counts
TE: Hardy / Pierson OR Haas
WR: Haynes / Carver OR Kemp
WR: Saylor / Henderson OR Kemp
WR: Gratton / Warren
T: Kistler / LaRowe
T: Poole / Schmaing
G: Poehls / J. Hines
G: Hendrickson / Kalekini
C: Oiland / L. Hines

DE: Harris / Crittenden
DE: Wagenmann / Holmes OR Kidder (Holmes is pass-rush, Kidder in run-support)
DT: Takai / Rehm
DT: Bienemann / Ginn
OLB: Kanongata'a / Richards OR Maus
OLB: Tripp / Owen
MLB: Stuberg / Coyle
CB: Murray / Goodwin
CB: Harris / Dennard
S: Tully / Rominger
S: Hermanson / Lebsock

K: Lider OR Greenberg
P: Shaw

KR: Henderson / Nguyen

PR: Nguyen / Henderson OR Naccarato

--------------------

Spots that I think are still up in the air:

- Haynes and Carver at WR, if Bryce returns this week after his knee sprain that could still be open.

- McKinney and Brzczeck at QB, I think Trent has it locked down but I'm going off Coach D's comments

- Richards or Maus at OLB, I think Richards has been out a bit recently, both have had ups and downs.

- The Hines brothers, one has a hurt wrist (Jordan) and the other's snaps have been erratic (Logan). However the choices behind them are either unproven (Todd or Weyer) or light (Brauer).

- Can't rule out Hayden Craig or Aschan Richards sneaking up on the 2s at TE but it's a long shot

- If Coyle is still out then Nick Holt will fill that role but I think Brock gets back easy once he returns

- LaRowe might see Max Kelly bump him out... neither has impressed to suggest they could/should play this year and both tackles are probably backed up by Schmaing before Kelly/LaRowe

However I think these spots will not negate playing time for the other guys - I think our team has pretty much taken shape.

Per this 2-deep you're looking at (quick math, may be off by 1 or 2):

52 total spots (not counting ST returners but including K/P)

12 spots by seniors --- 23%
15 spots by juniors --- 29%
9 spots by sophomores --- 17%
12 spots by RS frosh --- 23%
4 spots by true frosh --- 8%

With that two deep depth chart in mind are there any injuries that are a concern going into the first week or so? It has sounded like the o-line is pretty beat up.

Yeah the last practice I saw we had Poole, Kalekini, and Jordan Hines all out.

I like the balance between the class. It doesn't appear that at any point in the next 4 years we will have to do a complete reload because of graduation.

I'd say that's pretty close. Need to get the guys back that are dinged up. Also, Kidder has been moved inside, will be interesting to watch practice these next 2 weeks and see if he looks to be on the two deep at D-tackle.

2013 to 2014 transition could be a little rocky, 2013's guys I have listed here that will graduate are Murray, Rominger, Pierson, Coyle, Tripp, Kanongata'a, Hines, Hines, Tully, Kistler, Poehls, Bienemann, Oiland, Goodwin.

That's a real talented senior class of 2013.

Also IF (in the extreme off-chance) that Jordan Johnson returns this year and/or returns without a redshirt 2013 would be his senior year as well.

QB: McKinney / Brzczeck- I hate to say it but neither one impressed me on Sat. First practice though we have been to so I hope they have shown more than they did on Sat.

What's the deal with Kemp? If he is such a great athlete, why can't he make the first team? It seems as if his potential has always been greater than his actual contribution.

We're hanging a flag in 2013. You heard it here first. :thumb: ;)

He should be red-shirted

A great athlete yes, a great receiver no. He should be playing defensive back, and should have all along.

So many things, including a fair amount of luck, have to go into winning a NC. But at least on paper, right now you'd have to think the Griz will be one of the favorites in 2013, so it's difficult for me to argue with you! :thumb:

Converted RB/QB to a WR is a bit of a transition, add in he's working his way back into the coaches good graces. He'll be a factor, we have a lot of talent at WR... how often they get the ball though...

One of my biggest concerns is the speed at WR. I don't see any receiver that can break away like Jabin or Mark did. We have a lot of possession receivers on the roster but no killer burners. Can someone post the latest 40 times to give some indication of the WR speed please?

I think Sean Haynes, Ellis Henderson, Chase Naccarato and Walcott are all considered to be burners. Naccarato is probably the fastest guy on the team according to coach Delaney (high 4.3's in the 40 and high 10.5's in the 100m). Walcott ran some really good times in the 100m (10.7's) I think. Henderson and Haynes have been described as very fast and deep threats by many posters who are in the know on this site.
These players are all very young and inexperienced, but they are Pflugrad recruits and something he did better than any coach in Griz history was bring in speed. I would say this is one of the fastest WR groups we have had in a long time.
Oh ya....throw Gerald Kemp in there as well. 6'2" 210lbs with 4.4+ speed.

Nacarrato (sp?) is faster than either. Too bad he is a true FR. Mariani looked faster to me, than Sambrano. Then again, Marc seen an opening on the field and just went for it. Sambrano, was a little more of a dancer than Mariani. Mariani was closer to 4.4 more often. Sambrano, looked more like 4.5. Either way, that is good speed.
