Northern Arizona Lumberjacks Scouting Report

#25 Kam’ron Johnson, S – Johnson leads the team with 4 interceptions, he’s a big safety at 6-1, 225 and is 2nd on the team with 53 tackles and tied for 1st with 8 pass breakups.

He gave a verbal to the Griz, then switched to NAU at the end, which allowed us to get the Calhoun's if I remember correctly.

Didn’t need him.

What we do need is a Ty Holmes kind of performance that can throw Cap’n Cookus off his game. I’d take a group effort or one standout, makes no difference. Introduce him to the new turf, early & often.

It’s a home game...so I’m guessing that the defense will keep them under 40.

Might be a shootout.....and I don’t see that scenario playing out well for us. Offense will be fairly one-dimensional and the defense is really good at giving up points at the worst times.

Other than that, how do you see your Saturday shaping up Mrs. Lincoln?

We don't need a stud safety??? Yeah, just like the Bobcats don't need a QB

But we got the Calhoun brothers over him, minor missed detail there.

I don’t get the reference....but I’m looking forward to it. Getting some fishing in before the skiing gets good.

I’ll keep track of the game on Twitter and catch a replay next week sometime.

Yep, Late October/Early November offers great fishing..... especially river fishing for spawning browns

he "X" factor here is Stitt! He folded last year and will most likely fold again this year UNC is the only game he will win the rest of the year!!! :( :(

Thanks. I enjoyed your scouting report, Brint. I can tell you do your homework.

I've attended three of NAU's home games this year as I drove up the hill for the Western Illinois, Illinois State and Sacramento State games.

A few disorganized thoughts before the game today.

1. This is around the time of year in the past that the malaise starts to present itself. Be it injuries catching up or simply a palpable drop in energy level on NAU's sideline. The famed Souers "November" fade. I saw the opposite last Saturday in Flagstaff. I saw a team that was hyped up, almost to a fault, with 140 yards in penalties. Many of them of the personal foul variety. A whole bunch of freshmen and sophomores are getting playing time and they aren't always making rational, calm decisions on the field. But I don't see this team shutting down over the last month.

2. Special teams have been an adventure this year. Kicker and punter are young. Special teams coach is in his first year. Lots of hiccups and bumps including long kick/punt returns and the snapper/kicker not always being on the same page. This could come back to bite them in a close, road game being played in inclement weather.

3. NAU's offense seems to run rampant til it gets inside the red zone. Then they bog down. I expect to see the same again today.

4. NAU's receiving corps is down its top three upperclassmen today. Emmanuel Butler is out for the season, Elijah Marks is out/questionable (coaches were vague, probably on purpose), and William Morehand hasn't seen much of the field this season due to lingering injuries. NAU's pass game has been relying heavily on freshmen and sophomores.

5. The famed environment and elements (it's loud...something...something...something...and...what... cold?) of Washington-Griz Stadium have played a role in the past and will today play a role. There are enough veterans on this team and coaches who performed there for the Griz, that the team will be prepared. But you never know how underclassmen will perform once faced with the situation.

Go Jacks! Best of luck the rest of the season, Griz fans.

Agree w/ #2 and fortunately on #3, they get into the Red Zone more, and score more TD's when there, than any other teams in the league. That helps.

The comment on point #5 is great haha, Griz fans love making jokes about it, glad others can use the humor too.

If Marks is out that’ll be a huge difference for NAU. Watching him on film, that dude is special. Cookus with a healthy Butler and Marks would be damn near unstoppable.

I must be a freaking oracle.

1. Penalties and over-emotion on NAU's part playing a role? Check.
2. NAU special teams laying eggs? Check.
3. NAU's offense racking up yardage (not as much as usual but still more than the Griz) but struggling to capitalize with points? Check.
4. Having to rely on freshmen who, in today's case with Stone Smartt, played hard but may not have been ready for the situation? Check.
5. The cold noise (or is it noisy cold?) and mystique of Wa-Griz having an effect? Check.

I hate it when my fears come true.

Both defenses played lights out. Both offenses, while being generally offensive, did what they could and UM did just enough more to win. NAU's special teams gaffes lost this game.

What I didn't see was lack of effort, malaise or signs of a late season collapse like in the past. That gives me hope. Cookus being back next week bodes well for the Jacks as well. Gotta channel all of that pissed-offed-ness in a more productive manner vs. MSU and SUU.

Good luck the rest of the way, Griz faithful. I predict an easy win next week against N. Colorado. Then the end of the year Brawl...I predict... at least 9 new "Fire Stitt" threads and, win or lose, Egriz losing its collective mind. That's what makes this place confounding and awesome at the same time.
