Anybody that relies on a 140 character tweet for their "news" or "the whole story" really needs to get a life.

If you're not getting your news from Twitter you're living under a rock. Seriously. I would say 90% of the news I get is from Twitter. If you think it's nothing but mindless babble, then you're following the wrong people on twitter. If you want actual news, seek out the people delivering it. Most of the time I see headlines fly across Twitter 20 mins before they hit news websites. Twitter gets a "mindless drivel" reputation from those uneducated and ignorant about it. The college football news I read on there is unparalleled.

You get your headlines from Twitter? Nice. Where do you get the rest of the story?

Usually in the links they provide or provide shortly there after.

Yeah...usually team activity news (any sport) - twitter is the first place it is shown. Hell, even for recent UDFA signings for the NFL draft - reporters post it to twitter, then hammer out the story, then do another post that has the link to their story.

And anyone who didn't follow the twitter feeds during the JJ really couldn't follow the trial closely. The only better way was to attend the trial. Reading the Missoulian articles, and especially the Florio articles, didn't even start to give a flavor of what was occurring. The Kaimin articles were good, when there were articles. There were some pretty good egriz summaries, but they weren't consistently provided.

The whole discussion with Brokeback started over following the JJ trial on twitter. He obviously didn't follow the trial, didn't know about the twitter feed, and doesn't understand twitter or its importance.

But to take some form of glee in her leaving is simply childish. UM had smoke coming from its athletic dept...be thankful it was not a fire. More and more universities, greater than Montana are now being scrutinized and, in many ways, it might be the Florio's of this country that make it better in the long run. Guess it depends upon how strongly you believe in media.
Attacking the messenger is rarely the solution.
Had GF stuck to the facts (and actually kept them straight) then far fewer people, including me, would had taken issue with her reporting. Had she actually been just a messenger delivering the truth then she would have been doing the community a service. Instead she launched her fiction writing career and wandered off into the weeds. If you do not rejoice in her failure then you are the one who does not believe in the media as an asset to our society. Woodward and Berstein did us all a huge favor by exposing serious corruption. Would they have succeeded in bringing down a president if their reporting was of the Florio quality? I seriously doubt it.

Thank you. You just proved my point. You're not going to get detailed information from Twitter alone. You need to follow a link to get the details somewhere else.

Brokeback was trying to use a typewriter to bang out his last post on the the LitterboxNation website.

:thumb: When you're discussing current events with your friends and colleagues are you doing so in 140 characters or less? I imagine your discussions are usually pretty short and to the point.

"hey guys! did you hear about the new transfer to the UM football team? Heard he was a Dick"

due to character limitations, the remainder of the post might've read "enson clone. Hell of a QB" (figure it out).

No one proved your point.. you have to have a delivery vehicle to get to that news.. are you gonna go check out xxx random website on your own or is it easier to have a delivery vehicle to put it all in one spot (ie Twitter). Get with the times, and keep up w/ the convo, gramps.

But the initial source is twitter.

Additionally the original discussion here was the use of official media handles and what they post on twitter. The Johnson Trial had reporters tweeting all day but the stories didn't come up until the evening. Twitter had the info first, the news/web sites had it later. Twitter wins.

Jeeebus... is there ANY thread on eGriz that there isn't a bunch of jackasses arguing? We should be celebrating in this thread!

No, UMGriz75 was complaining that Gwen's tweets didn't tell the whole story and left out pertinent facts.

It still came up first. You can agree with that while also claiming that some twitterers were more biased. You argue just to argue.

You all need to go back and read UMGriz post and my initial reply and then you might get it. "might" being the operative word.

I'd rather not be with the times if getting my news (headlines) in 140 characters or less is considered the hip, new, educated thang. (I'll continue go directly to the link that is often posted within the tweet... it's one less annoying step) You young 'uns and your conversational skills never cease to amaze me. Now I know why.

Why can't you just agree with me that it's a good thing that Gwen is moving on? She's 40% mindless babble and 6% self-promotion. Or maybe that's the other way around.

We've reached an absolute new low:

Griz and cat fans arguing on social media...about social media.

Bias in media is always greater when the reader (viewer or listener) is biased themselves. WE are better than we were 2 years ago.

She did not report very fairly or accurately, but I see some blame directed at her for the problems at UM, which is beyond crazy. If you think a journalist has enough sway to get the DOJ and NCAA after you, you are delirious.

She helped create bad press, but anyone else in her position would've done the same. Maybe she went more over the top than Joe Blow would've, but Mr. Blow would still be reporting about everything that was going on, and none of it was good.

I think that's fair.

But I think it's also fair to point out that without her making everything seem a lot worse than it really was we might not have been a target of the DOJ and DOE. I think the NCAA was here before she really got going, though it's not unfair to say she probably influenced their investigation, for better or worse.

Would Pflu and O'Day have been fired had the Missoulian not pressed with such zeal that JJ was a sexual predator? Would the DOJ have even bothered to come here had she not persisted in bringing up the "gang rape" that never happened?

Who knows. This all would have come out eventually, but she succeeded in making UM and the football program look a lot worse than it really was. And that's already been somewhat proven with the DOJ's findings.

edit: Another fair criticism is the lack of criticism about the Saudi student incident, which was glossed over in almost every story of hers.
