No Cherry

Not good, but hardly a surprise.

This team really came together after Jamar's injury. Let's see what happens after Will's.

ugghhh, at least when K Jamar went down the griz had a very capable player in A Steward to replace him in the starting lineup. However, with Cherry, the reserves are Autry and Wood. Not quite the comparison we had with Jamar and Steward. I hope its Autry that gets more playing time.

This is going to hurt in several ways: highest scoring output, our best defensive player, and the team leader is gone for a few.

I guess the bright spot is that Cherry's previous injury (his other ankle) will be able to heal, and we will be able to see what VA is going to bring to the table.

I guess we'll see if we have the ability to deal with some shit on the sidewalk. I'd guess we do; this team has showed some heart.

Hope Autry is going to get more minutes?

He is going to get more minutes. Time for the true freshman to step it up, be the man. Now he has to grow up in a hurry. He proved he can score yesterday. The one problem is that he may not have the ability to defend or drive to the hoop as well as Cherry which may weaken the inside scoring somewhat. But, maybe perimeter shooting will improve.

Man that sucks, I really hope that its not really serious and he has to sit out for the year, Weber has been plagued by injuries this year and I would hate to see another Big Sky team lose one of thier best players for the year.

Hopefully he will be back next week for your crucial 3 game home stand.

This is 1 of 2 injuries that the GRIZ would be really challenged by. The other being Qvale. We can still finish 12-4 in conference play, even with this injury. That should give us a 1st or 2nd conference seed still. Stockton and Selvig become our ball distributors. Wood and Steward penetrators. Vaughn Autry is solid defensively, but will not create the steals Cherry did. Autry is an improvement from the outside though. Let's hope Autry develops further from this injury. I have faith in Autry.

I hope and pray, Cherry misses no more than 3 games.

Yup, big time...injuries as such to Lillard (sp?) and Cherry are part of the game, but the team pulls together to suck it up. If the injury is as bad as thought the healing phase, not to mention the getting back in game shape phase will extend well beyond conference battles, perhaps the conf tourney and maybe for the year...

It is not like we do not have the guys to take the slack, but Cherry simply loaded the offense and gave us so many looks....burden on BQ or Selvig to carry us on their backs down the stretch.

Still think we have the goods to win out -all things working well- and get the title and home court for tourney BUT it ain't gonna be easy

Only a fleeting mention in this thread so far of the guy who'll step into Will's shoes on Saturday. This game will rotate on the success (or not) of Shawn Stockton... And I say he's ready.

He can't do it alone, but the Griz have the talent. Jordan's physically capable. But more importantly, I believe young VA is ready. I say, throw him into the fire. He'll be ok, whether it's mid-game tomorrow or down the road. He's the real deal.

Lastly, Kareem is really hungry and I'll bet he's already decided that tomorrow's the night to prove it. Hope he doesn't push too hard.

Coming into the weekend I figured the Jacks would be the tougher challenge. Ugh. Well, no matter. Because the experience that Stocks and VA get Saturday will pay dividends down the road.

There's one major caveat: let's hope Will's injury is just a low sprain (that's what it looked like to me) and nothing worse.

if it is a high ankle sprain...that is NOT good.... usually about 4-6 weeks until u can get back to playing again. And probably won't be back to 100% until next season..... *note Pouncey the Steelers Center..... obviously hind site is 20-20 but the minutes Cherry continued to log on an already weakened ankle...it was only a matter of time until it completely gave out. I would have liked to see the coaching/training staff limit Cherry's minutes a little while he was playing through the injury, and bring Autry along a little more while Cherry healed up. But I don't want to put this on Tinks & Co. as these types of injuries are so common in Basketball.....just really shitty timing....hope Autry & Stockton step up.....and we are going to need increased consistency and production from Selvig and Steward.....here is hoping we grow from the adversity.

It stinks anytime a key player, especially a PG, gets hurt. PGs are so important to a college team's success. I don't even want to know what would happen if Casper Ware incurred a similar high ankle sprain.

Cherry being out had to be the main reason for the double digits loss at NAU.
I would think that under normal circumstances, even with Flagstaff not being an easy place to play at, that a healthy Montana team would have had a good chance at coming out on top.

I was looking forward to seeing Ware vs. Cherry. I hope no fans from other teams coming trolling on here about Cherry's injury. Best thing to tell them is simply "karma". You gloat about an injury, don't be totally surprised if it happens to your team.

I agree with Baller as for Autry. I hope this coming week we see 20 plus minutes of Autry. Does anyone have some or all games recorded? I noticed during the NAU game some fundamental ball handling things. I want to compare ball handling of our guards over the season. Based on the NAU game, we need to handle the ball lower, and shield off defenders better.

I am watching the only other game this year I have recorded, UCLA. I am going to breakdown the guards.

1st possession- Jordan Wood is the only guard that touches the ball. Dribbling waist high.
2nd possession- Will Cherry gets to half court, and immediately dribbles the ball around knee high and protecting the ball.
3rd- Kareem Jamar, very low power dribble and kicks to Wood for an open 3.
4th-Will Cherry again breakds down with low dribble when approaching the defense.
5th- Cherry kicks to Jamar with very little ballhandling (1 dribble in transition)
6th- Will Cherry again lowered the dribbling, penetrates, great pass to Qvale, Cherry whistled for charge.
7th-1 dribble only on transition, missed lay in.
8th- Cherry low dribble, Jamar about thigh high dribble, and Wood waist high, did not shield the ball.
9th- Cherry broke down low when he approached the defense. Turnover Selvig.
10th-Cherry low, Jamar thigh high, and all be damned, Wood dribbles just above the knee, protects the ball and gets a reverse lay in.
11th- Wood, high dribble with tight defense, did shield the ball though.
12th-Cherry low power dribble, unprotected, but quick bounce pass for a lay in
13th- Stockton very high unprotected dribble, defender swipes at it, tips it,and forced Stockton to be trapped, other defender called for a reach. Stockton goes left with good low power dribble, but no shield, gets inbound yoyo's the ball waist high, no shield.
14th- knee high protecting the ball, kick to Steward, below the knee power dribble, near impossible for a defender to pick. just lost his balance.
15th- Cherry, below the knee, missed perimeter shot
16th- Cherry below the knee with and protecting the ball at all times including a crossover.
17th- Cherry below the knee power dribble and protecting the ball.
18th- Cherry high dribble (waist high) and no protection, Stockton above the waist with left hand, and no ball protection.
19th- Cherry 2 below the knee power dribbles with nice kick for open 3.
20th- Cherry low dribble, Adams and Jamar no dribbling.
21st- Cherry below the knee power dribbles, Chase Adams one high dribble and very little protection.
22nd- Cherry one quick dribble, bounce pass to Wood in transition. Wood dribbles high (waist high) with left hand.
23rd- No 1/2 court dribbles, Wide open kick for 3.
24th- Jamar, low left hand baseline dribble, well protected
25th- Cherry , low power and crossover, each protected
26th- Cherry low and protected power, missed lay in though.
27th- Cherry, low with each hand, Wood 2 waist high dribbles, very little protection
28th- Jamar low power dribble well protected, Wood a few more waist high dribbles unprotected.
29th- Cherry low, Wood high left dribble, not protected.

33rd- End of the clock, useless possession. (halftime)
34th- Wood, waist high and unprotected with each hand. Cherry below the knee and protected.
35th- No halfcourt ballhandling, all passing and bigs.
36th- Cherry low and Jamar one great power dribble
37th- Cherry low and protected, fouled going to the hole.
38th- Wood with one low power dribble and lay in.
39th- Cherry, low and not well protected
40th- None, other than Cherry scrambling for an errant pass.
41st- Cherry very low and protected, short jumper.
42nd- Cherry, low and protected.
43rd- Cherry, low on power, and crossover, both protected and very low.
44th- Cherry, Man to man fullcourt, low, protected all the way, Lay in Cherry.

52nd- Stockton low and protected, Wood 1 high dribble, solid protection. Stockton high and no protection with right hand, Wood, high and with some protection.
53rd- Cherry, low,and protected, Stockton waist high no protection going right. Cherry low and protected both hands.
54th- Cherry, full court press, low and protected all the way, lay in.
55th- Cherry low and protected, Stockton low then high, not protected.
56th- Cherry low and protected, Stockton waist high with left and not protected, UCLA picks him.
57th- not applicable, ball thrown away before a guard could handle it.
58th- we break the press with passing, no dribbles
59th- Cherry easily breaks the press, pulls it back, foul, time out UCLA..... Cherry low handle, Wood low, a little out of control, fouled.......UCLA fouls Cherry just after the inbound.
60th- Steward low and protected to break the press. Wood waist high, some protection.
61st- NA, foul by UCLA
62nd- Cherry low and protected, breaks the press with ease. To the hole, fouled.
63rd- Cherry breaks the press, Goal tending UCLA.
64th- Steward low power dribble protected, nothing more.
65th- NA Stockton fouled at the other end
66th- Cherry ver low and bad pass.
67th- we hold the ball, game over.

After watching the NAU and UCLA games, I know why Cherry is so valuable. He is much better at taking care/protecting the ball than Wood and Stockton. Not sure who has games recorded, but if you do, break down the ball handling. There is a huge difference in Cherry and the other guards. There was very little to evaluate Autry on in the UCLA game, but he did have a low dribble against NAU.

I focused entirely on ball handling in the UCLA game. Stockton and Wood need to lower and protect the ball better. I am sure they are capable of it. With them getting more ballhandling, they need to do it.
FWIW, UCLA was also lacking in ballhandling.
