"NIL (Name, Image Likeness) Q & A for Boosters

Q: Can a booster pay a student-athlete to attend their child’s birthday party and sign autographs?

A: Yes, appearances and autograph sessions are permissible NIL activities, provided the student-athlete has disclosed the activity to the compliance office. Additionally, the student-athlete would not be able to wear any UM-issued apparel or items with UM marks (unless written approval is granted from the UM Trademark and Licensing Office).

Q: Can a booster purchase a game-worn jersey from a student-athlete?

A: No. Student-athletes may not sell or exchange for another item of value institutionally issued apparel, equipment, awards, etc. (even if it will not be re-used) until they have exhausted their eligibility for intercollegiate competition or have become permanently ineligible for competition. While a student-athlete may not sign their team-issued gear, a fan may purchase or provide articles for the student-athlete to sign.

Q: Can a booster compensate a student-athlete for an autograph in the lobby of the team hotel at an away game?

A: No. Student-athletes cannot participate in NIL activities during official team activities.

Q: Can a booster provide a student-athlete entertainment (i.e. a day at the lake, etc.) unrelated to NIL activities?

A: No, providing entertainment unrelated to NIL would be considered an extra benefit and would negatively impact the student-athlete’s eligibility.

Q: Can a booster provide a student-athlete with non-cash compensation (free meal, discount, etc.) for a permissible NIL activity?

A: Yes, in-kind compensation is permissible, provided the student-athlete has completed the promotion and disclosed the agreement to the compliance office. It remains impermissible to provide payment of any kind to a student-athlete for work not performed.

Q: Can a booster provide NIL compensation to a high school prospect so they will attend UM?

A: No. Any compensation provided as a recruiting inducement to attend UM remains impermissible.

Q: Can a booster who is a business owner arrange for a student-athlete to promote their business?

A: Yes, as long as a University staff member is not involved in arranging for the promotion, it is permissible for a booster to contract with a student-athlete for NIL activities. Student-athletes are required to disclose all NIL activities to the compliance office.

*All NIL opportunities must be disclosed to the UM Athletics Compliance Office. The purpose for disclosure requirements is to monitor compliance with NCAA rules and UM policies. A student-athlete shall disclose all details of the NIL activity within 4 days of signing an agreement and/or before the activity occurs."

You wanna take a couple guys to the lakehouse PR? Just have them sign NIL’s with Gull Boats. :) Suddenly it’s an NIL-related trip!

You’re welcome.

So Playa can’t have these guys come out to the lake house and get oiled up to wash his private yacht????? His summers are going to be ruined now.

No player has ever worked and stayed at the house for a month, to my knowledge. My niece's Cat boyfriend, now husband, never came with or without his girlfriend (yes, I'm a Cat donor). My kids never brought their Griz and Cat boyfriends and girlfriends. They never came to the vacation house for Thanksgiving either. I assume the way to go now, is to just have some Cat and Griz shirts or posters to autograph when people arrive. NIL compliant. I don't know any Cat or Griz parents who hosted their kids' player friends at their houses for holidays or at their lake places in the summer, or lent the friends their cars. I have never seen a downtown bartender not charge players or their friends or dates, for drinks. I have never seen a parent pick up a table for the player and his friends after games. Yes, Peter Nguyen once got a free cold hot dog at a teammate's parents tailgate after a game. I have never seen a former player have current players on their boats or at their houses or for a party, at the lake in the summer.

greenie adds a lot of value to the board. i don't agree with his attitude , his views, or his methods a lot of the time, but what a boring world it would be without differing opinions.
