yeah, i know. this year ain't over till it's over. but even if we sneak into the big dance this year, i'll have a few misgivings. we've lost three key road games--cal, boise state, sac state--we should have won, so we'd be at best a 16 seed, or worst, a play-in team. some part of me wants the very best team to represent the conference, and that appears to be eastern washington. they won the big road game at indiana, and if they get a 13 seed, could win us a game. that would be huge for the conference. another walloping as a 16 seed would not be great for our program. so here are some thoughts and questions about next year.

personnel: this coaching staff has been absolutely definite in its evaluation of players. martin: not a player, gone; boehnig and dejong, not ready for prime time, redshirts; krslovic, a major talent as a true freshman, on the team, even a starter; kemp, role player, good only in specific situations; lopez and bradshaw, not starters but worthy of key minutes; nwosu, not worthy of key minutes. questions for next year:
--is nwosu even here next year?
--will krslovic show huge improvement between his freshman and sophomore years?
--will dejong and boehnig be ready to contribute? are either or both true talents?

michael oguine: (pronounced oh-geen-ee): the most anticipated recruit since cherry or jamar in my opinion. averaging 22 points and eight rebounds in a tough league. the best player on the floor against most of the teams chaminade plays. he will not redshirt, and i will be happy for that! but will he be physically ready to have an impact at this level? will he be a starter? here are some links to whet your appetitie:

I love the way Loyola H. S. coach, Jamal Adams, described Michael Ogiine: 'Adams marveled at Oguine's "world class balance." '

I have been mystified regarding Nwosu's lack of playing time. He was a dead eye shooter in JC. I believe there may have been some injury problems early in the season but since then, I have no idea. Another big factor is whether they plan on having Jermaine Edmonds back next year assuming grade issues are resolved. He is on the bench at all home games along with the redshirt players.

Fortunately, Oguinne's scoring ability will allow him to see minutes at PG and SG. That versatility will make the transition easier for him. It is hard to break a FR in at just pg. Even in Cherry's FR year, it took until mid season before Wayne was comfortable having him at PG for major minutes. Bradshaw also does a solid job directing the team, when Dunn will need spelled. Bradshaw has looked very solid the last month, and become consistent. He is knocking down key shots when he has them. He takes care of the ball. His defense is much better than most of us will give him credit for. He is by no means a liability on the court.

I am hoping Edmonds plays next year. He is very versatile offensively and defensively. He has no weakness offensively, and can play 1,2, and 3. Defensively, his only weakness is mental breakdowns. He has the build and athleticism to be a dynamic defender.

Boehning will give the GRIZ length and a true presence in the middle. At worse, will lessen the burden on Breunig and Krslovic. DeJong is a stud athletically and will give the GRIZ a lot of frontline versatility. I hear nothing but great things regarding the development of Boehning and Dejong. I still am hoping the GRIZ will land another true PF/C type that rebounds and defends well.

Next year, the GRIZ should be a conference favorite again.

Michael pulled a hamstring, badly, in mid January and faded just a bit from his very dynamic start. Unfortunately, Chaminade High, did not make the top 16 team that will determine SoCal's best. They remain one of the top teams in Calif. but two of their league, are in the tourney and Oguine led his team to wins over both. I wouldn't mind our women's basketball team getting any one of the Chaminade girls...They are rated in the top 3! This is one powerhouse high school athletic program...With Gregory being a Sr, I think UM will have a nice transition oriented team next year that could actually make some noise nationally.

Agreed they should be a better team next year with 4 returning starters, their incoming recruits/redshirts, along with the possibility of Edmonds coming back, but keep in mind they have a brutal preseason schedule next year. Considerably harder than this year. When could you ever say that an away game vs Kansas wasn't the hardest game on a Grizzly teams schedule? We will play preseason games vs (at least) 2 teams in the top 20 next year, and one could be in the top 5.

I'm glad DeCuire isn't happy to pad the preseason with easy wins and is willing to play a hard preseason schedule. It's good for everyone, but might make it hard on the W-L early in the year.

No mention of Gfeller?

Gfeller and Bradshaw deserve "most improved." They are strong contributors at this point and both just sophomores. Gfeller is arguably a better 3 ptr as a soph than Jordan Gregory was. Given their progress, I'd expect improvements next year as they become starters. Lopez, a bit less confident than I might have expected. Still in development.

Dunn is a key player. Not as improved as I might have expected from last year, but perhaps expectations are spoiled by Jordan Gregory's visible improvements from year to year., but he'll be a junior next year and if Edmonds can get back up to speed, lots of strong depth next year.

So, after Breunig and Krslovic, Dunn, Gfeller and Bradshaw. Have to see how the new unpronouncable guy transitions to college ball. Spelling Breunig and Krslovic, Boehning and DeJong. They make a good red team/blue team practice match up with Breunig and Krslovic and are getting some good experience. DeJong is a strong kid and will be a presence.

My bad on Gfeller. I guess, if I had taken time to read my post, I would have remembered him. Yes he will be a critical player for us next season. He has been that most of this season. He had few inconsistent games this season, but seems to have found his confidence and shot the past month. If he can work on his ball handling and creating his own shot in the offseason, he can be 1 of the top scorers in the conference, and put up Gregory like numbers next season.

Agreed. Gregory 3 pt stats his soph year were 41-98, .418%
Gfeller is already 61-142, .430%.
Plus Gfeller is clutch. He takes-and makes- big shots, he has all season.

In that terrific play, Gfeller is already in position, he's so ready for the pass from Breunig. He's signalling Breunig. They had to have practiced something like that. It was so smooth. They are positioning two moves ahead of where the ball was, and as a backup play. That play right there sold me on what this Coach is doing during practices. And look at the two UNC guys leaping at him, but he takes his shot. Like Jordan Gregory, ice water ...

When was the last time we played a top ten team in pre-season? Let alone 2 of them! Granted the rankings will be a bit different by next year, but our 2015-16 SOS is pretty impressive.

So the Griz are playing Kansas next year?? Who else? Where did u get this info??
I was born a GRIZ fan but also have been a huge Jayhawks fan for years.

Kansas and Gonzaga, there was an article on it within the last month or 2. :thumb:

That is so wrong on so many levels. Remember when Dan Trammel slammed the Griz into the tournament after a mediocre Holst regular season? Did anybody have any reservations about that? Of course not. And neither should we this season. Screw EWU! They haven't earned it yet. There's still a lot of season left.

And what's this junk about not wanting to be in the tournament unless we're a 13 seed? Jesus, citay, our guys can't be afraid to play anybody! That's the mentality you have to have in the tournament! You're in it to win it, not to meekly get by some 4 or 5 seed so you can poop your pants in the next round!

Mods, please ban this guy for heresy! That's covered in the Code of Conduct, ain't it?
