Coastal Carolina brings talent and skill, and the Griz will need to jump on them early. If UM is not careful, there could be another Wofford-like situation where first half lapses occur.

Saturday is a chance to further that emergence in a big way.

“It’s obviously a great opportunity. We’ve never won two games in the national playoffs before,” Cheatwood said. “Montana’s known, has a reputation and tradition of being a great team and a powerhouse in the FCS, so for us to beat them and beat a program like that, it would take our program to the next level, so that’s what we’re going up there to do.”

These Chants don’t lack for confidence – not after the last season and a half – and they especially believe their strengths on the offensive side of the ball match up well with anybody in the country.

Coastal enters this game ranked third at the FCS level in scoring (43.0 points per game), seventh in rushing (262.5 yards per game) and 10th in total offense (492.7 yards per game).

In interviews this week, Montana players and coaches talked a good deal about Coastal senior running back Lorenzo Taliaferro – the Big South Conference Offensive Player of the Year who has 1,572 rushing yards and 26 total touchdowns – and the challenge he poses.

“I wouldn’t really say we’ve seen a running back like the one we’re going to see on Saturday in the Big Sky [Conference] this year, so I know the guys are looking forward to the opportunity,” Grizzlies senior middle linebacker Brock Coyle said, while also touting the strength of his own unit.

“I think on defense we’re such close-knit group,” he added. “About midway through the season we knew that we could be better, we knew that we could come together as a group and we all want to play for each other and play as best we can.”

Montana, which earned the No. 8 seed in the playoffs and had a first-round bye, has allowed just one offensive touchdown in its last 10 quarters.

“Their defense is a good defense. They’re sound in the gaps and they’ve got some big guys up front, but I don’t think they’ve seen an offense as dynamic as ours as far as skill guys,” Cheatwood said. “[Sophomore quarterback Alex Ross] can sling it, and we’ve obviously got the strong running game to go with it, so I don’t think they’ve seen the best of both worlds, which is what we’ve got.”
