Newlee leaving Idaho State

ISU women's basketball coach Jon Newlee won't be around to give the LG grief on a regular basis anymore. He's accepted the head coaching job at the University of Idaho. ISU and the Big Sky will be losing a very good coach...but not everybody can be as lucky as UM is to have Rob for so many years, or as Weber is to have Carla Taylor as long as she's been there.

Taking a head job at... Idaho? :lame:

Looks like somebody wanted out of Pocatello pretty bad. Or is it because of the mess I hear about in the athletic department?

You guys lost a good guy and a good coach. That could kill the program unless you get someone like him in there. Good luck.

Newlee did a great job with the ISU progam. Congrats to him on the..ummm...promotion?...to Idaho.

Better pay at Idaho, and they don't have the huge deficit ISU has, which means cuts in every program. I don't blame Newlee.

GB1...you're exactly right. Idaho may not have a better gym to play in than ISU does, but if you look at the salaries (Jon will get a significant pay increase) and all the other things that surround a program, like locker rooms, film and study facilities, offices...he will see things at UI that he may never have seen at ISU, which includes more stability and security for his assistants. Also, Jon was an assistant at Hawaii for a number of years and grew up in southern California so he'll now be able to go back to those places regularly. His mom lives down around San Diego. If his asst. head coach goes with him it would make sense because he's from Hawaii and would now get to go home at least once a year during the season, and another assistant is from Pullman, and she's getting married up there next month. And yes, the unstable situation here at ISU had a LOT to do with it.

If DeVilbiss hadn't been such a jerk, he would nevr have lost Leilani Mitchell, who transferred her senior season to Utah, and just got drafted by Phoenix of the WNBA. Katie Morgan just transferred out of Idaho, too because of DeVilbiss. I KNOW the remaining players there will love the change to Newlee. It's totally our loss.

As a side note...ISU today also announced it's dropping men's golf immediately, which will save the program around $85k a year.

Too bad Ardie wouldn't come back. I loved her fiery competetive nature in the sideline. I doubt there is any chance she would return given the situation there. How much stability is the program going to have under the new AD?

certainly there was other programs that could use a good HC, i think going to Idaho would be career suicide :twocents:

Not in WBB. Idaho has had some past success in WBB. ISU wasn't a given when he took that job. If Newlee has some success at Idaho he can write his own ticker out of there.

a step up from the penniless pitiful big sky conference, a conference held together at its ragged seams by its patron savior, the one school that provides bucks, a fan base, a real college game-day experience. i envy newlee, and wish we were tagging along. it's long past time for montana to step up to the challenge of a better conference.

This is a huge blow to ISU...well, this has been a fun 2 months for us, hasn't it? No Volleyball coach, our 4th AD in 6 years is gone, nobody seems to care and now this... :crybaby:

Oh, BTW, hi, ISU Superfan here. Nice to meet ya'll, quite an atmosphere you have up there in Missoula, and keep it up!

Go Bengals, Go Buckeyes!
