New Voice of the Griz Named

Everett, I am not privy to if there were more qualified or experienced applicants. Just can't speak to that. I can say, and while I totally agree, the new Griz Vision was certainly dollars and cents motivated by Learfield, the board itself is not costing UM athletics, boosters or tax payers anything, and I am privy to the fact that before Learfield decided to install a new one at Wash-Griz, UM was trying to figure out how to get five more years out of the original one because that's how long they estimated private fundraising would take for a new one. So, and maybe it's just me, but I'm grateful for Learfield stepping up, because Wash-Griz, while the best FCS venue in many, many ways, was wayyyyyyyy behind when it came to its video board. And I'm glad the stadium is getting a new one, however it came to be.

Learfields motivation was the same as UM's, and it is an investment that they know they will recoup many times over. That return on investment will accelerate the revenue returns even more so if Stitt puts a great product on the field. The school doesn't have the marketing chops (& Learfield does) to have made the last installation the kind of paying proposition that would have allowed the school to pay for upgrading & owning the revenue streams it brings. And even if that were the case, there are monies needed in so many other places that it would have been difficult to justify without making it look like a booster-directed effort. Nothing wrong with any of this, & it's a great investment for both parties because of the butts in seats that WaGriz delivers every home weekend.

And I wouldn't count on this kid being a long-term investment. If he is any good, he'll be changing his Twitter handle to #voiceofthe__________, for a bigger paycheck before you know it. Guys like Mick will be the rare exception going forward, not saying that's right or wrong. Just the way of the world.

Don't forget, the University took a chance on Mick many years ago. People probably thought the same about him as some do they new kid. That turned out alright.

I still think UM should've tried to get that Cookie Monster guy who yelled at Fields at those MSU toolshed press conferences. Sure, he would've sucked pretty badly, but it would've been hilarious! He was my reach.

Dikembe Mutombo was my backup, and Lou Holtz was my safety.

Mutombo would have been great. Dikembe & Gurns has a certain symmetry to it. My backup would have been Bill Cartwright, and then I would have gone with Musburger. Like Mick, would have been a home game - home Saturday's.
