NDSU 2023 is my #1

I graduated in 1981. I went to every Griz game at Dornblaser when I was in school. Griz Football has been in my blood for 46 seasons.

I’ve had season tickets in the NEZ since they built the seats there. I’ve probably missed 5 games total at most since then. Two of those games were consecutive, the 2009 playoff games against SFA and Appalachian State.

It has always bothered the hell out of me that I wasn’t there for the classic against ASU. But being there last Saturday night was healing. I feel like getting to experience that game with 26,000+ of my best friends, I now know first hand what it was like to be there the night of December 12, 2009.

A two for one, if you will.

I was fortunate enough to be there for both the app state and NDSU games. The App state game is still my number 1. I think this NDSU win is now number 2 though. App state still holds that top spot though because I felt like the team played a more clean game on offense, and we also beat app when they were REALLY REALLY GOOD…..don’t get me wrong, this NDSU team was good, but they weren’t quite as good as say their 2019 team or their 2011 team, which are considered a couple of their better ones. App was at full strength, and had Armanti and Quick, among other future NFL talent….they were truly at the height of their powers, having won two of the last three or three of the last four titles, or something like that, which is why they remain the number 1 game for me

I’ve been in that stadium for a number of games. I’ve told this story before, but in ‘09 I did NOT come for the SDSU comeback, came for the SFA blowout, then did NOT come for the App State classic…so for ME, the top two games are:

1) NDSU 2023
2) MSU 2021
3) NDSU 2015
4) Jackson State 1989 (my first game in the new stadium)

Been going for a long time , and certainly some recency bias, but for me personally:

2008 vs Cats. The throwback jerseys. Wow.
2009 vs app. Probably the first and only game in my life I just enjoyed going and would have been happy no matter who won. Best game ever.
2015 NDSU. More the atmosphere than the game
2023 NDSU. They were who we thought they were.
2023 msu. Who saw that coming? That’s when you knew this team was special.

2009 had NFL talent all over the field. Something like 8-10 players. That game was back and forth all night. It’s number one for me. Last weekend was a VERY close 2nd

Since you all are reminiscing about the best of games played at Washington-Grizzly Stadium, at least, since 18 October 1986, that is. I do recall that the PA system at the time for the Griz had an opening 'Griz Growl' right before the teams came on the field, or something like that. Strange thing, I don't think the Griz PA system and/or your Athletic Department supervised events has done the Griz Growl' since. Kindna miss it.

I had a classmate in grade school in Billings, Wade Curry. His younger brother, Pat Curry, was a Griz of some repute years later and was the voice behind the Griz Growl that played on the PA that first year in WaGriz. Because of the limitations of the stadium audio at the time, it actually sounded more like a post-pizza and beer belch. But it’s the thought that counts.

Pat Curry???......never heard of the guy!!

but it's rumored the "Griz" growl began at Billings West peprallies as the "Golden Bear" growl in 1977.

There was no sin in not coming to the SDSU comeback game (life happens). The sin was leaving the SDSU game early, which did happen. I stayed, and it was glorious.

Epilog: The following week, on the way to the SFA game, I was a passenger in a horrific rollover accident close to the Jens siding. And that is why I missed that game and the following ASU game, as referenced above.

I think I counted once and 17 players from that game (both sides) went to NFL camps. Unreal.

Yes. My judgement was even worse then than it is now. To add insult to injury, I proceeded then to GO TO Chatty and watch us lose to Villanova. So yes…brutal to say the least.

Left the sdsu game early to tailgate aka drink and remember drinking all the miller lite at the tailgate and listening to the crowd. We won of course and it become a tradition for my buddy and I to then drink all the miller lite at the tailgate during that playoff run

I will never forget rushing the field in the snow for app st. But. The ndsu game with my dad and his excitement to ent here and see that will make that game alway number 1 for me

Both classic games I'm so thankful to have been at

Strictly Brainstorming, players that suited up on Sundays were Mariani, Reynolds, Turmaine, Shillinger, Jordan Trip (R-Fr?) Brock Coyle (R-Fr?), Armanti Edward’s, Brian Quick, and I’m sure others. Not sure if Tripp and Coyle were redshirts. But, man oh man was there some DUDES out there!

I don’t think either of them got even a sniff from the pros, but Keith Thompson for the hit, and Matt Cline for walking away from it, were DUDES.
