NCAA Stats: Griz are crappy free throwers

Some folks took exception to my railing on UM's FT performance in the Cal-Berkeley thread. After all the blather about how soooo terribly stressful it is on the FT line here are the facts - which note that a lot of teams don't seem to have that problem...

NCAA 2014-2015 FT rankings thru 6 games (for UM anyway)

From Alabama # 1 at .812
D
O
W
N
to UM # 311 at.624 (out of 351 D-1 basketball programs)

Oh Yeah, UNC comes in at .775 , Weber St at .770

Clearly we'll need to keep our guys off the free throw line over at Cheney. :ugeek:

Yes the Griz are 311 (actually tied with 7-1 Baylor at #311) in FT shooting. Not good that's for sure. Good teams can struggle with free throws though. See #5 ranked Louisville for example, who shoots 58.4% from the line (#337 in D1 basketball) or UNLV who shoots 57.7%.... or San Francisco who is #350 out of 351 teams at 54.7%. Lets see where Cal ranks... #304 at 62.7%. The best team in the country right now (Kentucky) shoots 65.3% from the line (#253 out of 351).

So yes a lot of teams actually do have that problem...including some of the top teams in the country.

The free throw shooting will improve for the Griz as the season goes on. I'm confident of that. We may not end up a great free throw shooting team but I seriously doubt it'll be down near 62% anymore.

FT shooting will improve. Fortunately one of our most frequent FT shooter's is Gregory. He will find his FT touch again soon. At least he has his worse FT shooting game behind him for good now. Breunig will be at the line a lot too. He looks pretty good for a big guy from the line. I know Gregory will be 80% plus most games. I am hoping Breunig can be relied on for no worse than 70%. We need Wesiner to get to the line, he is money. I am not too sure about Dunn yet. Gfeller is like Staudacher, he does not get there often, and he needs to learn to draw fouls. I doubt if Kemp will be very consistent from the line. As for rest of the guys, I really don''t know what to expect from them.

Tip must be one of those stupid folks that AzGrizFan was referring to .

Hmm: Through too many posts I've learned that a few "Mods" sometimes go out of the way to voice a personal familiarity with stupid... ;)

Individually, most of this team has demonstrated outstanding free throw skills. The last three weeks have been pretty ragged in that department, and in any given game, it seems like only two of the five cylinders manage to fire. But, it's not because of the lack of basic ability; it's not a question "can" these guys shoot free throws?

Griz now up to 166th. Maybe they aren't crappy free throwers. 68.3%. 70% would be 174th, and tied with Duke and others.
