NCAA Investigation

This was in the Billings Gazette linked in the prior post:

"The NCAA has been investigating the Grizzlies since December of 2011. It’s believed the probe surrounds alleged player benefits at football tailgates -- food and such -- in addition to a more serious charge, which contends that the parents of a football player bailed former teammate Gerald Kemp out of jail after he was arrested in the infamous Taser incident during a fracas with the cops at a party in Missoula in October of 2011."

I did some checking on the "serious" charge. At the request of Kemp's family, the mom of another player put up the money to bail him out. The money was paid back within a few weeks, is what I was told. The NCAA says it should have been paid back within 24 hours. It probably didn't take much money to meet bail for misdemeanors. Can it be true that the NCAA considers this to be "serious"?

No one knows what the NCAA has uncovered. Until we see a Notice of Allegations, or somebody in Montana is smart enough to file a FOIA request from UM, there is nothing but conjecture. Has the Missoulian filed a FOIA request with the UM? I assume that the money for the attorneys are coming from the general fund, or at the very least, should be public record, as well as any communication with the NCAA on this investigation.

I don't think that's quite right. It looks like Haslam knows from these quotes from the Gazette article:

"Haslam said he “can’t get into the details” of any infractions he suspects the NCAA may levy against the football program, but it won’t come as a surprise if the Griz lose a couple scholarships or are forced to vacate some victories from what was a hugely successful 2011 season.

Ostensibly, the NCAA is investigating Montana for what’s known as a lack of institutional control.

“I wish I could lay everything out for you at this point, but it’s probably not the best thing for me to do,” Haslam said. “All I can say is that we’ll get through it, and we’ll be a better athletic department when it’s done."

People who have been interviewed by the NCAA know what they were asked, and what the NCAA followed up on. Some of these people may have attorneys involved (and I know one does). The NCAA has gotten back to one of more of these people or their attorney with some preliminary findings. Some of this has gotten around town.

From the rumors around town, much of which is fairly consistent, I believe there is considerable information now known in the community. I don't think it's just the same rumor or rumors going round and round, but I suppose that's possible.

What's your reason for stating "no one knows what the NCAA has uncovered"? How could you possibly know that? Or are you just assuming or guessing that?

Rachac inserted his own opinions into the piece, hence "ostensibly" being used, and the lack of any specifics from Haslam.

Although vacating wins and losing scholarships isn't exactly ideal, and is basically an admittance of cheating to keep players on the field.

I have seen MSU STUDS eat post-game at tailgates. Prime rib to boot. :thumb:

F*cked up rule. Nothing wrong w/ giving a kid a meal.

Having a mom loan money for a few days or weeks, to bail someone out of jail for a misdemeanor, isn't exactly cheating. Giving a hot dog and water to a few players at a tailgate isn't exactly cheating. Allowing Kemp to play for a few games in these circumstances may be cheating in your book, but Kemp only started a few games in his career and was hardly a key player in the games after the taser incident. In the 3 games he played, I see that he had 3 receptions for 10 yards, 18 carries for 60 yards (8-21 in the Western Oregon game), and was 7-17 with 1 interception and 93 yards in the Western Oregon game. He didn't play in the MSU game. The rumor mill says there's more than this, and if Montana is agreeing to penalties as mentioned in the article, there better be much more than this.

Again, you are forgetting that nobody knows what the NCAA has found, or will do. Probably not even the NCAA at this point.

The Billings Gazette is the one that called that allegation "serious", not the NCAA. The NCAA may make mention of hosting athletes at a tailgate in their findings, but I doubt this is the crux of their investigation. I think that rumor has been blown up on here.

This is from the Notre Dame Athletics Compliance (first link I found).

http://ncaacompliance.nd.edu/parents.shtml#Meals" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

•You MAY provide a meal to your son or daughter's teammates at any location on an occasional basis.
It then goes on to say that occasional meals should be approved through the compliance office.

If the NCAA has an issue on any campus, I think it has to deal more with random boosters (non-related) providing perks to athletes. Just a guess....

Anyone hear any updates on possible delay in the NCAA outcome? Could they still be monitoring JJ's legal representation and how it is being paid for? I think that is a possibility.

How so? He's only been a member of the team for 3 months and hasn't taken a single snap in a game since being accused? Considering the NCAA investigation started 3 months before the allegations arose, I highly doubt any impropriety would have occurred in regards to how his representation was paid for. That being said, the NC double Assholes being who they are, doesn't mean they aren't looking and trying to find ANYTHING they can.

I know for sure, so far what was found was very minor in nature. I would not be surprised if they are snooping on how JJ's defense is being paid for. Seriously, other than the University deciding what policies to put in place, what else could be delaying the results?

Don't be surprised if some Missoula attorneys (other than JJ's counsel) are criticized or implicated for providing gratis or discounted services to athletes.

What delay? Haslam has said the process inevitably takes 18 months. It started in January, 2012. Look for a report in July. If not, that will be a delay.

The change in timing is that both Engstrom and Haslam were saying a few months ago that they hoped/thought the investigation would be over in a few months.

Not a change in timing. 6 is a "few."

It's my understanding that these guys and others at UM have said that the timing of the end of the investigation has changed, ie been extended in the past month or two.

Under your view, UM lost a "few" games last season. Is that right?

Beyond Wienergate and possibly an ineligible player, I can't help but wonder if the DOJ report and administrative roll-over might not of pumped a little air into the rapidly deflating "institutional control" balloon: Seem the admisnistration is in a confessing mood these days. Hopefully no one is working the Jimmy Hoffa case ore they may be digging up the stadium......

...only investigation needed...
...and iz needed at the ncaa...
...azzholes are out of control...

... 8-) ...
