Seems strange that Charlston Southern would allow this to happen.

It's been a while since I was in college, but I don't think the athletes even stepped foot in the bookstore. I believe they got all of their books at the academic center and then had to return them at the end of the semester. Seems risky giving college football players a handful of cash and telling them to go buy books.

While I think this is a dumb rule by the NCAA, I also think that Charleston Southern could have avoided this very easily.

This is exactly how it was when i was in Missoula. You would give your advisor your schedule and they would order the books. You then would pick them up from the academic center. Then there is no money wasted. It's like watching Last Chance U where he goes and buys wireless headphones instead of his books.

This is pure speculation on my part, but when i read "electronics" in the player's message my mind went to these players using extra money to buy iPads, headphones, etc. Even though the NCAA has skewed rules, I do not think the university would bring this issue up if their books showed extra money spent on paper and pencils...

Exactly my thought...Still pretty sad

So, you are 19 and (presumably) have purchased all of your books and the guy at the checkout counter in the bookstore says "whoa dude, you still have money left on your account. You know if you don't spend it, you lose it..." So the first thing you think of is "oh, man I better check to see if it would be an NCAA violation"...? If so then you are so far past 19 that you don't remember what being 19 was all about. As others have suggested this is almost certainly an institutional screw-up. Put money in a teenager's hands and tell him that he needs to spend it and it WILL get spent.

Meanwhile bama just doubled kiffins salary to 1.5 million annually.

It's good we don't allow players money because if we pay the players then how are we going to afford all these coaching salaries

Yes. Amateur hour by CS compliance department. How many coaches are reviewing their practices right now?

(STATS) - Charleston Southern will play without 14 suspended players on Saturday when the No. 7-ranked FCS team visits FBS No. 3 Florida State.

The Big South Conference university has suspended 32 players for NCAA rules violations that stem from their misusing financial aid allocated for books to purchase other items at the school bookstore.

Sixteen players sat out last Saturday's win over Kentucky State. Two players will serve their suspensions at a later date.

Charleston Southern coach Jamey Chadwell told WCIV in Charleston on Friday that his team will have the maximum number of players on the travel squad.

Speaking outside the team bus as the Buccaneers prepared to depart campus, Chadwell told the television station, "The guys that we're taking down there have played and have helped us win before. There's going to be some new guys. Obviously, it's not the situation you want to go in with the No. 3 or 4 team in the country."
Thursday night, Charleston Southern players took to social media to air their anger over the suspensions.

Senior wide receiver Colton Korn posted on Facebook: "As many of you have heard or haven't... CSU Football has been dealing with a witch hunt the first 3 weeks... We have sat 16 players the first 2 weeks and now me and many other seniors and juniors who have helped lead this program and school to unprecedented highs on and off the field will be suspended against Florida State this Saturday."

My condolences. This will be ...

One hell of a hard #7 rank to maintain.

To be extra safe, Chuck South should report themselves to the NCAA for lack of institutional control and VOLUNTARILY give up 4 schollies per year for 4 years. /sarcasm

30+ Charleston Southern players are being fined and suspended 1 game for... spending their book money at the campus bookstore on items besides books.

Items included pencils, binders, and electronics. Looks like the whole offensive line is suspended. NCAA is a joke.

It sounds like Char Southern has some kinks to work out and I feel for the student-athletes, IF what they are saying is true. However, I am guessing very little of the "excess funds" was used on pencils or binders and mostly on Electronics.

So how does the NCAA keep track of what items athletes use their cost of attendance money on? Are pencils and paper allowed for purchase with that money?

So, a little birdy just told me this game is at 61 points. Yeah I know down a bunch of players, but holy toldeo that is a lot. With the messed up circumstances of this game, I just don't see ol' Jimbo running it up like that. That is my degenerate tip of the week!
