. . . “Hopefully we get the Griz,” junior forward Jackie Elliott declared. “We don’t know yet, but we’re hoping it’s the Griz. “That Cat-Griz rivalry is always in the back of our minds.”

. . . Montana State lost 84-79 in overtime on Feb. 3’s trip to Missoula after erasing a 17-point second-half deficit. Exactly one month later, a sloppy second half and an inability to keep the Lady Griz off the glass resulted in a 72-65 Montana win that seemed to prolong the ’Cats’ late-season tailspin. Two consecutive wins to close the regular season, however, has Montana State confident on the eve of its eighth consecutive tournament appearance. “I think it’s going to be a great matchup — they were both really close games for us — and I think the odds are in our favor,” senior forward Ashley Brumwell said Monday. “Having lost to them twice, we’ve got a little bit more fight in us, and we know what it takes to beat that team.” The fact remains that in both meetings this year, Montana’s sagging defense, which forced 29 turnovers, limited the Bobcats’ offense by disrupting the effectiveness of Jasmine Hommes. The sophomore center, who was Montana State’s leading scorer and an All-Big Sky honorable mention, scored a combined 32 points on 10-of-29 shooting.

. . . almost a story to tell. It was almost the best half of Kalli Durham’s life.

It was almost. . . . ultimately became was a 52-point second half that fell nine points short, resulting in Montana State’s 15th and final loss of the season. . . . lethargic first half in Thursday afternoon’s Big Sky Tournament quarterfinal that yielded their lowest scoring output in any half this season, the Bobcats nearly rallied from a 22-point halftime deficit. But early foul trouble — a problem all season — began sending Montana to the free-throw line with 11 minutes, 45 seconds remaining in the second half, giving the Lady Griz easy points and sapping the ’Cats’ momentum. In all, Montana converted 27 of 36 free-throw attempts in its 75-66 victory at the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center in Grand Forks, N.D.

“I think it’s really disappointing, especially for the players to have that great comeback in the second half,” Montana State head coach Tricia Binford said. “We felt like, gosh, this was one that we let get away by not putting even a solid first half on the floor.” Montana State’s second half was a perfect foil of the team that took the court during the game’s first 20 minutes. After scoring 14 in its worst half of the season, the Bobcats opened the sec ond on a 14-3 run that cut what once seemed like an insurmountable deficit to an 11-point Montana lead. Jackie Elliott began the half with a 3 that was followed by an Ashley Brumwell field goal and a 3 from Ausha Cole. Jumpers from Durham and Brumwell then preceded two Jackie Elliott free throws.
