Ms take 2 of 3 from the LAA

Good series, solid game today.

Betancourt with two homers in the series, Reed with two, Ibanez, Sexson and Beltre go deep as well. Lopez is a stud, this guy is a rapidly rising star, the Ms had better hang onto this guy. Betancourt's a gold glover, he's rock solid, and how about Reed's defense this weekend?

Ms need to build off these two games, three tough games in Oak-town and then home against the Padres. I believe the Ms have won 5 of their last 8, and are looking better. Also, I like this Fruto guy that pitched today, solid preformance!

I think it's time they moved the fences in about 7 feet at Safeco. This team is fun to watch when there is actually a chance they might go long.

So is it still fire Hargove?

IMO, yes. 1 series win on the road (2 in a row counting the D-rays) won't get him back in my good graces. If they win 13 or more in the next 20 games and move closer to the top of the west, I'll maybe reconsider.

Yes, fire Hargrove.

No, do not move the fences in at Safeco.

Yes, Lopez is incredible. If Hargrove wouldn't have jerked him around so much last year and if Bavasi would have had the stones to DFA Boone sooner, we could have been watching this performance much earlier.

Yes, Fruto is interesting. When he actually throws strikes, he can dominate. His control will frazz out on him on a fairly regular basis, though. Just don't jump off the bandwagon when he has a bad outing - guys like him are the future of the bull pen. He is surprisingly nimble for a guy with his...girth.

Yes, Reed is good defensively and you don't hit .400 in AA unless you know how to swing the bat. He had a bum wrist and a bad few weeks - let's hope he's back now and let's also hope that Hargrove will play him against left handed pitching. Let's hope he plays well enough to force Bloomquist back into the Super-Sub role that he is actually good at.

Oakland typically kills the M's, but we will have Felix, Moyer and Joel going against them. Give 'em hell, boys!

Damn - too late on the edit again so I have to reply to my own post.

Anyway, how good has Lopez been? Try this on for size:

He's slugging .469 - and that's with half of his games in the grand canyon that is Safeco. His slugging percentage on the road is an eye popping .560. That means that over half of his hits on the road have gone for extra bases! He's hitting .288 overall and .271 at home. He's hitting .410 with runners in scoring position and - get this - hitting .313 with runners in scoring position and two outs! That, my friends, is clutch.

How good has the bull pen trio of Sherrill, Putz and Soriano been? How about 37 hits in 53 2/3 innings good? How about 68 strikeouts vs 23 walks good? How about an opponent batting average of .198 good? Those three are as good a trio as there is in the majors right now.

BTW - Sherrill has held left handed hitters to a silly .091 average.

If Beltre, Sexson and Reed can all start hitting this team will be pretty interesting. Assuming, of course, that Chaves and Johjima can keep Joel and Meche from a complete implosion.

Draft day is just around the corner. I should preview the guys the M's will be looking at with the #5 pick. Think pitching, pitching, pitching.

And hey, the Ms are not in the cellar after beating the Angels, they're 2.5 back from Oakland and 3.5 from Texas.

A sweep of the As (not likley, but possible) would put the Ms in place to possibly take the lead of the West, assuming Texas drops a game during that time span.

Yep - Texas is Texas. The will wilt in the mid-summer heat of Arlington as usual. The Angels and A's are both pretty banged up. The early tough schedule is behind the M's and they are lucky that no one ran away with it while they were in their funk. They've got a relatively easy schedule for the next month or so - if the bats can heat up they might be able to gain control of this crappy division.

I've never been so interested in a team with a .420 winning percentage in all my life. At this point last year, I had a sick feeling in the pit of my stomach even though the records are similar. This year just feels...different. I think it's all the young guys that are kicking tail - Lopez, YuBet, Sherrill, Soriano, Putz.

Great points GB, hey you mentioned that you've read some info on Mariners chat boards, could you point me to which ones those are? I could use yet another board to post 1,000,000 thoughts on :thumb:

Ask and ye shall receive.

The best one that I know of is www.sportspot.net

I'm MtGrizzly on that board (Ha!) and it's the best run sports message board that I've ever seen. You have to sign a contract when you sign up, before you can post. It details the things that will get you kicked off and if you violate, you get booted. No swearing, no adult material, no personal attacks. There are some amazing folks that post there - people that know more about baseball than I ever will, that's for sure. I like the Mariner forum and Minors forums on the Spot. Enter at your own risk, though. It will suck time from your life.

For good editorials on players and such, I like the DrDetecto site http://detectovision.com/

The guy is a bit over the top in his optomism toward players but it's always a good read. He'd got two "POTD's" (short for player of the day) up on Fruto right now. One breaks down his pitching mechanics and one details why the author thinks he should be starting. Good, good stuff. I like to check on his site once a day during the season.

Jason Churchill just started a blog called "prospect insider" that is looking really good.

The boys at Lookout Landing do an oustanding job if you are into the stats of baseball. www.lookoutlanding.com

They graph more obscure stats than I even imagined. The guy that runs it is a former minor league pitcher, so when he talks about pitchers everyone listens.

I guess I would be remiss if I didn't mention the oldest "unofficial" M's site www.ussmariner.com

They have some good content on there sometimes but it's run by some very bitter people. They seem to think that their word is the truth and if anyone questions the moderators on anything, they go on the offensive. They even delete posts from people that prove the wrong or call them on their BS. It's weird to me, since it's just some dudes talking about the Mariners but I guess it's their site and they can do whatever the hell they want with it. I rarely go there anymore - too damn negative.

LookoutLanding has by far the most entertaining game threads out there. I like reading them after an ugly loss - there are some characters that post there. The interface kind of stinks, though, so I'm usually on the Spot for their "kindler, gentler" game thread.

Enjoy.

And as soon as things were looking good, they get swept, and in embarassing fashion.

The interesting thing from this three game series is that the Ms had 32 hits to the A's 34 but were outscored 25 to 11. ugh...

This was a big series for the M's and they coughed it up BIG time, just like they always seem to at their own little house of horrors in Oakland.

I got so frustrated with last night's game that I turned it off. I say as soon as he's healthy enough, bring up Snelling and let him DH. I am soooo over Carl Everett. We're stuck with Sexon and Beltre, so you just gotta pray they're drive in a run eventually.

The M's had 15 LOBs today. Ouch.

Well, Snelling was scratched from his start last night at the last minute. Official word is that his knee stiffened up on him but he was coming off of an off day and speculation is that something is in the works.

At least the guy can take a f'ing walk once in a while. The M's might have outhit the A's, but it's tough to win ballgames with a flurry of singles. Take a look at the "total bases" stat for the series. It's ugly. The M's don't walk and don't hit HRs. The A's walk a lot and hit HRs. Guess which team had more total bases. And guess which team kicked which team's ass.

Watching the 2nd game against the As I recall a few 3-0 and 3-1 counts that the guys would swing on...

So I get home and turn on the game to see Meche was throwing a 1 hitter through 6 1/3, holy crap, GIL MECHE?!?!

Good win, nice to see Reed and YuBet being major contributors again. How about Reed though, looking much better!

Reed's swing looks a whole lot different. As much as I bitched about his benching at the time, it does look like the off time helped him out. I don't know if his wrist healed or if the work with Pentland did it (or possibly a combination of both) but he looks a lot better at the plate. He's back to that Olerud-style upright batting stance that I like for left handed contact hitters.

Weird stat of the day: The M's lead the league in tripples and are dead last in all of MLB for walks.

Meche is good for one or two of those starts a year. Just enough to tease us into believing that he's turned the corner. I'll look for his next start to be decent but not great, then the next will be so-so and we will blame it on bad luck and then he will be back to the Gil Meche that we all love to hate.

What's the deal with this team? Everytime I'm ready to completely write them off and recommend they just bring everyone up from Tacoma to play, they ring up 3 or 4 straight wins. Then, everytime I figure they might have a shot (especially in the mild, mild West), they'll look terrible for a week.

I'm going to the game tonight so I hope they can keep it rolling. I can't stand watching losses, and I can't afford more than 3 or 4 beers at Safeco to deaden the pain when they don't play well.

Wow, they bring in Eddie and the 1st batter takes him to the wall, as soon as I heard the crack of the bat I thought that pitch was gone. Eddie gets the save but got two outs on two deep shots, one that probably would've been a homer in many parks.

But Eddie had a completely different posture yesterday, filled with confidence. And yeah, the first ball put a scare into everyone, but the ball was carrying very well at the Safe last night. In general, I thought he pitched very well.

I thought Grover stayed with Green for two hitters too many also. Still, it's great to see the bats starting to come alive, and for the hits to come at big times.

How about the 9th inning IMPLOSION tonight? Ugh, they were batting like they were earlier in the season, watching the good pitches and swinging at all of the wrong ones.

Although that bare-handed play of Beltre's was sure nice.
