Ms look like more of the same

Yeah yeah, I know it's just one game, but today I didn't see much change out there.

Putz blows another one.

Heart of the order bats .092 (1-11) with no RBIs

Moyer gives up the long ball.

It wasn't a bad loss, there's some good signs, some of the new guys did well today, Jo Mama had a nice HR. I hope they can get some hits from the guys in the middle this year, thats what hurt them last year.

Funny. I haven't been able to see them yet with the big move and all but the chatter on the Seattle 'Net is that this team looks nothing like the 05 M's. This offense is going to score some runs - Lopez sounds like a man on a mission and Joh is going to be a good one.

The sooner we can get JJ "Puts men on base" the hell out of Seattle the better. I don't mind him in a mop up role but the guy just can't be trusted in a big spot. The pen will be ok, I think. I like Sherrill a whole lot - he had some shoulder tightness that cost him a good piece of spring training. With that funky delivery, he'll be effective and between him and Soriano I'm comfortable with the 7th/8th innings. Guardado is going to be an adventure all year long as the closer but nothing new there.

Some netizens want to see Meche moved to the pen and he might be better suited there than in the rotation. I can't see the M's making a move like that unless they are willing to completely give up on him as a starter and/or one of the AAA starters is ready.

Livingston will probably need four months or so in Tacoma and there's no guarantee that Foppert will ever recover from Tommy John at this point.

I think the Mariners have looked real strong so far. Taking 2 of 3 from a team that everybody says is better than you in the division is a great way to start. The only glaring weakness so far is (obviously) bullpen.

Dammit 2002, if you don't stop using pictures of my girlfriends for your avatar, we are going to have some words. :thumb:

On a more serious note, Carvajal was traded to Tampa for some 20 year old dude that no one had heard of. Bavasi got caught in a crunch on the 40 man roster and Tampa caught him trying to sneak the guy through the DFA wire. I had hopes for Carvajal. Now the M's effectively got nothing for Torrealba. Oh well.

BTW - best play by play call ever today during the AA Missions game. One of the M's minor leaguers hit a pitch right back at the pitcher.

"And he smokes one back to the mound right off the pitchers...right...groin...area. The pitcher is down. Oh boy, that looks like it hurts. And we'll be back after these messages with the pitching change on your San Antonio Missions radio network."

(about the San Antonio call) My oh my!

I think most Mariners fans would get that reference. Anyway, I liked watching them take 2 out of 3 against the Angels. They were that one team that isn't expected to do much that won the opening series. There's usually one of those every year. If they take 3 out of 4 from Oakland this weekend, or even split the series with 2 wins, the M's will be a tough team to deal with this season, especially at Safeco. And does anyone like Jojhima yet? He's a hell of a player and could end up being the best pickup since Ichiro.

It's nice watching the M's score some runs again, and the pitching has been pretty solid (anytime your #4 goes 51/3 and only gives up 2 runs that's got to be a good thing). Last Saturday I was in Tacoma watching the M's get beat by their AAA team I thought it was going to be a long season, but it looks like they are putting it together, although I remember plenty of years when Seattle got off to a hot April, only to fall apart in May or June, so I will just enjoy it while it lasts.

Looking forward to King Felix tonight.

After the second Angel game one of the Seattle papers ran a headline that said "So Do Mo Joh!".

I just love watching Johjima play the game of baseball. I don't think that I've ever seen a catcher with that much presence. You can really tell that the pitchers absolutely love the guy - after a big strikeout he'll pop up, take a couple of steps forward and point strait at them or give them the fist pump. The look on Gil's face when he did that in the second inning last night was priceless. I can't wait to see he and Felix work together.

Every hitter in the Mariner lineup got a hit last night. Putz struck out the side in the 9th. Gil threw way too many pitches but only walked two, while striking out 6. The new pitching coach Chaves has every single starter thowing that sinking two seam fastball that just eats batters up. (He taught it to Felix last year in Tacoma.)The new hitting coach Pentland has the batters fouling off ball after ball. Ichiro has picked up a weird high leg kick that he must have learned from his manager (Oh?) in the WBC. Lopez is finally shutting his critics up. YuBet is silk in the field and has a vicious swing. I'm even warming up to Jurassic Carl.

I am officially freaking out. The schedule is not kind to the M's for the first 20 games or so - if they can come out of that stretch with a winning record I'm going to be making my plans for a trip to Safeco later this summer. Damn, I missed this!

I am a long time, long suffering (at times!) fan of M-ball. With the addition of another stellar Japanese player Johjima it appears that our most consistant performers are not home grown talents. Too bad we lost that pitcher a ways back.

I suggest that GM simply go to Tokyo and sign the WBC Champs! At least to my eye the Japanese players "play" with pride, intelligence, intensity....something that many of our bloated homies cannot or will not do on a daily basis. I love their dedication to the game and work ethic. The world has caught up with USA sports, we are getting a lot of talent outside now.

Fans know the difference when observing the 'mail it in' efforts of guys when compared to the new blood in the game. I think it is great for the Ms as well as the game. Other sports, NBA, NHL are also seeing it too, just showing up with USA on the chest is not enough anymore!

Well, with the wacky Japanese baseball rules, a player has to put in ten years of service time in the Japanese big league before he can become a free agent and come to the states. For most players, that means that they are 33 or 34 years old, which is the downside of their career. Ichiro started playing in the bigs when he was 17, so he came over in his prime. Johjima started in the Japanese bigs at 20, so he's still got some mileage left on his tires. The only guys that are likely to make it to the US Majors are either the superstar, freak-talents like Ichiro, Matsui or Johjima that can start at 18, 19 or 20 years old or guys on the downside of their career that can be effective, fairly cheap roster fillers.

Next year, though, watch out. The best pitcher in the history of the Japanese majors is probably going to be posted. Matsuzaka is his name and the guy is a pitching machine. He won the MVP of the WBC and is positively sick. He pitched a 170 pitch, complete game shutout in high school and then came back and pitched another five innings two days later. He's got a mid 90's fastball and an array of breaking balls that he can throw, throw, throw. The Yankees, Mariners, Dodgers, Red Sox and every other high revenue club have been scouting him for a few years now. Having Ichiro and Johjima on the team probably makes the M's the favorite to land him. The thought of he and Felix at the top of the Mariner rotation from 2007-2011 makes me positively giddy.

We could have the best leadoff man, the best catcher and the best pitcher in the history of the Japanese league playing for the Mariners next year. Woot!

Ok - my reality check comes in the form of the Oakland A's pitching staff. I'm back to my pre-season, pre-giddy-at-the-possibilities prediction of a .500 season. Progress, yes, but hardly the 90 wins that I was contemplating a few days ago.

I guess we can see why Oakland is so highly rated. That pitching staff is excellent, top to bottom. I think a bigger test for the M's is to see how they do on the road this week at Cleveland and Boston. But now I'm thinking .500 would be great for this team.

I know it is stupid to say any game is a "must win game" this earliy in the season, but the M's really needed that victory last night. Things don't get any easier after this series in Cleveland when they go to Fenway, and a win last night was a good "coagulant" if you will after the consecutive losses. The swung the bats well. Hopefully Ichiro is out of his slump and WTF is up with Guardado? If he keeps this up they are going to have rest him four days between appearances like they do the starters. He has had a couple of outings where he has thrown close to 50 pitches.

Another good win on the bats of the Ms. I hate to say it but the pitching appears to be their early weakness, especially from the bench. These guys aren't the Yankees or Red Sox they cannot consistantley go out and score 8 - 12 runs/game and bail out their moderate pitching.

You know, the pen has actually been pretty solid. Putz learned how to throw the splitter in the off season and other than one appearance the guy has been lethal. He's struck out 14 batters vs one (!) walk in a little over seven innings, which is just sick. His fastball is still a 95 mph meatball that catches too much of the plate but with that splitter in the minds of hitters, they just can't seem to get a read on it.

Soriano is as nasty now as he was before TJ surgery. I don't think the guy could throw a pitch strait if his life depended on it - everything he thows has some weird movement to it. If he follows the normal TJ recovery curve, he could add a few mph to the fastball as well. Soriano throwing 94-95 with movement is filthy. Soriano throwing 97-98 with movement would be positively sick.

Sherrill is still working back from his injury but he's also been looking good as of late. He's got that "stocky body, short arm" thing going for him and he hides the ball so well that left handed batters just can't pick the ball up well.

I don't know what to say about Woods. He was huge a few days ago - coming in for 2+ innings and shutting everyone down.

What can you say about Eddie - it's a high-wire act every time he takes the mound but he seems to get it done.

Mateo hasn't looked good at all this year, which stinks.

The offense is going to be maddening all year. We've got a lineup full of contact hitters that don't take many walks, so the O is going to be inconsistent. If 4-5 of them are on in the same game, the team will pile up the runs. If only 1-2 of them are on in the same game, the O will struggle. It would be nice to see Ichiro and Beltre start hitting. And Everett. Heck - one third of the lineup (including the two highest paid guys on the team) is hitting .200 or less and the team is still .500. Lopez is a stud and Reed has a 10 game hitting streat going.

My big concern is still the starting pitching. Felix hasn't looked good yet but he missed the last two weeks of spring training, so hopefully it's just that. Moyer scares me but seems to be chugging along. Washburn is what he is - a 12-14 game winner that will have his good and bad nights. Pineiro and Meche will be the key, I guess. If they can both somehow manage to have a good year the M's will be decent. If they both fall apart, it's going to be a long season.

Yeah, I guess I am going to have to revise my opinion of the bullpen. A few more runs against Boston would've been nice. Now I am turning my ire to Beltre/Everett. Their output so far has been less than anemic.

Edit - Guardado gives up a 2 run bomb with two out in the 9th inning and the M's lose by one. Bum.

Don't leave Ichiro out of the venting. He's stinking it up so far this year, too.

They reallllly should have traded Eddie at the deadline last year. His fastball has no life left to it at all. If his location is off by one millimeter, he gets pounded. At least Soriano can get away with a poorly located pitch because of the late movement that all his pitches get. Soriano for closer, NOW!
