Moving Up Thread

This! Gonna need a lot more NIL money pouring in as well. Ain’t happening. Remember Idaho? They seem to be in a better spot than they previously were. Boise State? Not sure that program is the pinnacle of success right now and they aren’t exactly in a powerhouse conference. You think they will make the expanded playoff field next year? Nope. Carry on.

Hahahahaha!!

Look, you can point to Idaho as the one outlier who didn't succeed at the fbs level if you wish. But to denigrate what Boise has done since moving fbs -- both athletically and university-wide -- is a freakin joke.

That COULD have been Montana, and still could be if we would only move fbs.

And just where might UM go?

For years I supported a move to FBS. At this point the way things have changed in college football it will never happen. Sadly if anything is we could see even more decline and the FCS becomes more Div II. We will have sweet facilities and still be in battles to compete at any level. We are seeing now that the mystique of WA Griz and our fan base are of no real priority to young men these days.
I don’t mean to sound me like a negative Nancy but the glory days of the mid, late 90’s and early 2000’s are over.

Glory days went to 2011. 3 semifinal appearances from 08-11 and 2 national champ appearances.

I don’t think FCS has become more D2 at all.

Don't expect a straight answer from him other than anywhere but the bsc. all he does is bitch and complain about it

Simple answer there is no where else for montana to go for right now or the forseeable future.

This question is so meaningless. Currently, there likely are no options. But if everyone says, "there's no where to go so nothing to do", when there is an opportunity -- and there will be -- we won't be prepared. Instead, UM needs to do everything including having its bags packed and a moving company on speed dial, making it well-known to all involved that they are ready, willing and able to get the eff out of the bsc.

Think about it this way: do you ever make plans for Saturday evening earlier in the week? Why? It ain't Saturday?

To the FBS.

You mean they could be playing on Wednesday nights in front of half full stadiums, getting a little more TV money but having the Athletic budget double and still having to play money games to break even, just for a chance to play in the Potato Bowl.

But hey at least you could stand around the water cooler on Thursday and the few people who saw your team play can tell you how bad they looked. :thumb:

How is this different than the bsc, minus the better officiating and far more money?

Much higher expenses. Additional expenses higher than additional revenues. Wed-Thurs games. Lower attendance in Missoula for those games. More disruption to academics due to those mid-week games. More losses. Fewer MT kids. No playoffs. Higher ticket prices.

You must like potato bowls, I don't care for them myself.

G5 teams are as irrelevant as FCS teams IMO. I enjoy following a team that aspires to something more than a crappy bowl game.

I will once again become an advocate for moving up (in some form or fashion) once G5 develops an official playoff system. They are literally the only group of college football teams that DON'T have one now...

Yeah, G5 is just as irrelevant, except they’re on TV more, make more money, have better talent overall, and nobody thinks they’re DII. I’ve stopped correcting people when they refer to Griz FB as DII because whenever I used to say they were actually DI, I was met with confused looks from people thinking I was crazy.

WOW! I started this thread tongue-in-cheek. Looks like I have tapped into a vast reservoir of discontent. :fuel: My apologies.

You failed to address the need for more NIL $’s and what has Boise done lately that is so impressive? They won’t be making a playoff game with the expanded field. No thanks. I believe you have become so vested in the argument of moving up that you fail to realize the true landscape. I have zero opposition to moving up if it makes financial sense and the Griz were to remain competitive. The thought of zero chance at a playoff game at any level is a huge no for me. Competing to play in the toilet bowl does nothing for most fans and it doesn’t help Missoula. You can hate the fact that not moving up isn’t going to happen, but it doesn’t makes the facts any less true.
